Something you've labored over recently?
A fan of the late Sue Grafton, I really wanted to like her last book -- Y is for Yesterday.
Unfortunately, its 864 pages of mostly unsympathetic characters left me asking, "Why?" After page 564 I bailed and Googled the spoilers.
How will you rest on Labor Day?
Probably the same as any other day -- not far from my recliner and the pups!
Margaret Mead is quoted as saying, "I learned the value of hard work by working hard." Would you agree? Where and how did you learn the value of hard work?
I totally agree. By example. My parents set the bar when it came to hard work and ethics.
It's National Eat Outside Day (August 31). Will you? Do you enjoy dining 'al fresco' or prefer indoor seating?
Indoor!
(That doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a chocolate martini a little later out by the fire pit.)
Somehow it's the end of August. What was the best day of the month for you; tell us what made it so?
Yikes, this is hard!
August is my least favorite of the 12.
I'm going with yesterday's brunch with the Bible study gals.
I love my husband, but sometimes I need the company of other ladies my age.
Everything was so yummy. If it's possible to consume one's own body weight in Gouda grits, I might have tried!

So, last week I ignored a call from an unknown number. A few minutes later, Tom's phone began ringing. Same number.
"Yes. May I ask, who's calling?"
Astonished -- then annoyed -- to learn it was a private investigator in New Mexico, calling to see if I remembered "C" from high school.
Vaguely. I knew the name, but that's all.
He persisted.
Before I finally succeeded cutting him off, the PI allowed, that "C's" family is suing R.J. Reynolds for causing the lung cancer which killed their brother a couple of years ago. Did I remember him smoking in high school? (etc., etc., etc.)
Okay, I'm sorry to hear someone died. At the same time, I'm largely unsympathetic.
I'll admit, back in the day we might not have been aware of cigarette's addictive properties.
I smoked. Almost 40 years, I enjoyed it.
But when Tom was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013, I quit.
I'm not interested in following this case, but I sincerely hope Big Bad Tobacco doesn't cave.
I wish people would stop playing the victim and take Personal Responsibility for their own actions -- and the consequences thereof.

Deleteabout Labor day, if i rest anymore than on each normal day, they would bury me. LOL.. this labor day I will be 78 years old, which means I need a lot of rest. I LOVE cheese grits and could eat my weight in it easily.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking the PI was a scam and not what he said it was. even if it was not, I never answer a ringing phone that i don't know who it is. that is both home and cell. I agree about people taking responsibilty for their own lives and I don't think it is right to sue any business for what someone did with something they sell. or a bartender for serving drinks. last but not least, i can't remember a single Best Day of any month since the beginning of 2020.

DeleteI reached out on the (private) high school FB page and found out this guy -- or his associate -- actually showed up at two of their homes unannounced! I'm pretty sure my former BF is the one who gave him my numbers. Supposedly, the FB admins don't release that information; but all the same, I've since deleted it. This lack of privacy just makes me so mad.
I think March might be my least favorite. It's really humid here today so I doubt we'll be dining outdoors this evening. Soon though!

DeleteSo I'm thinking the Ruth Bible study is over if you guys had a get together that included food? What's the next study? Oh wow, an over 800 page book! I can't imagine reading it and sticking with it, especially if there were less than favorable characters in it! I agree with you about the lawsuits, etc. People need to take responsibility for their actions and once something is identified as a potential harm to one's health, one needs to make their decision to stop doing it; like you did with smoking! Interesting how the PI tracked you down though!

Yes, thank goodness! We're starting something called "Encounter the Spirit" week after next by Carolyn Moore(?) .... jury's still out, but at least it won't be that same (awful) facilitator.

I agree with you. I love my hubby too, but I still like time with other ladies, especially my sisters.

DeleteAugust is one of my favorite months, because it provides me with many fond memories - - but I'll admittedly confess that I'm glad September is finally here. Autumn is not far away!

An 800+ page book with unsympathetic characters would drive me bonkers....
That telephone call from NM was really weird and, I think, annoying. I've gotten to the point where I seldom answer my phone - which often provides unnecessary stress.
Hope your Labor Day weekend is relaxing........with no labor.

DeleteAs a former smoker myself, I'm with you, Myra. At some point, we have to own up to and take responsibility for our actions. Yes, I'm glad I've quit, but had I continued, I would have had only myself to blame for any additional illnesses down the road.
ReplyDeleteOn another tangent, I so worry about the lack of work ethic in this up and coming generation. I hammered that ethic into my own children, and I know they will stress it to their kids, too.

DeleteI think September is my favorite month. It eventually starts to get cooler and that's when school used to start. It energizes me.

DeleteAugust is one of my best months, not because I love the season...it's way too hot...but it is the month I chose to get married in 53 years ago, and it is the month I gave birth to my first child 51 years ago, and it was also my Daddy's birthmonth, and our son Matthew (RIP) was also married in August. There are other extended family birthdays as well, so it seems to be a prolific month for our family! But it is still way too hot. I still don't know why we chose to get married in the hottest month, except that we wanted to get married before the next semester started at college for my hubby's senior year. So there you go. I enjoyed your answers. I think the PI was a bit bold and over the top and scammy. I would probably have hung up on him. And even though I detest what smoking has done to so many people, it was a choice they made and so therefore they should not bother to sue. They had a choice. Okay, that's all I'll say on that subject. We will be busy celebrating a bunch of those August birthdays and anniversaries with our extended family on labor day, here at our house, so I will be laboring for sure! LOL. Good night. This was a long response. Sorry.

DeleteYes! I agree. I was a smoker, no one twisted my arm. I knew there were medical problem possible, anyone breathing smog knows that. I will say, it is a TOUGH habit to quit.

DeleteI'll be going to my son's house for a cookout on Labor Day. I can't imagine a Sue Grafton book being boring, it doesn't seem possible, but now I'll be staying away from it. Thanks for the warning. I do love to read and it seems there is an unending supply of them. I have rarely stopped in the middle of one. I read them to the end. I used to love going to Bible study with my girl friends. But I had to stop when I could no longer drive after dark. Ours were always in the evening. Good friends and good food, nothing could be better! Love, ma

DeleteEven two reviewers on Goodreads questioned whether it was really written by Sue Grafton. Hmmm.
Phew 864 pages is way too long to suffer through. I would have bailed as well, and done the same, googled for spoilers!

Deletemy hubby smoked from the time he was an 8 year old boy. he quit when he got diagnosed with COPD thirteen years ago at age of 70. he's in bad shape at this stage of COPD.
