Do you suppose we outgrow images ... the same way we do fashions, the songs we once loved? Seasons.
I'll admit, there was a time I chose pictures that either complemented my furniture or were considered trendy. The idea of loving what I looked at hadn't crossed my mind.
For the most part, nowadays we're surrounded with pieces that evoke memories and/or make my heart smile. (I don't think Tom even thinks about it. lol)
For instance ....
Early in our marriage we came across Don Schimmel's Photography at an art festival. We purchased our first piece; thereafter, an annual tradition.
Four years later ...
Having recently grown dissatisfied with the look of my office, I've begun entertaining alternatives. But seriously! There's only so many estate sales to attend ... particularly when you don't know what you're looking for! I know diddly about art; I only know what I like.
Unlike my former boss -- who collected original paintings she'd switch out every 5-6 months -- we don't have that sort of disposable income.
What to do? I disappeared down the rabbit hole -- aka Pinterest.
These speak loudly to me.
For now, I've satisfied myself with gazing at my monitor's background slideshow -- what Microsoft calls 'Light in Darkness.' It don't cost nuttin' to look!

Well, since we are currently staying with friends...there is nothing on the walls here in the bedroom. We are discussing though the walls of the cottage we have bought, and we both feel the need for some sort of change, grin. We shall see and I will keep you updated, grin.

DeleteRight now my walls have more pictures of family than anything else. I have a lot of pictures yet to hang, but don't have much artwork at all. I do like your choices and see a nice variety there. Peaceful landscapes like those of Thomas Kincade always look good! Love, ma

DeleteI'm thinking they are running out of the tunnel, towards the light :) We have pictures on our walls from hubby's parents' house. I don't particularly care for them and if he passes before me, they are going to be off the wall and to Goodwill so very quickly. I am probably really weird, but I just like bare walls :)

ReplyDeleteYou've chosen some inspiring images, Myra. The Don Schimmel works are beautiful. I was never a Kincaid fan, but his paintings are very satisfying. They seem to appeal to everyone.
I like the photographic images. The train at night is haunting. I'll be optimistic (for once) and say that the people are emerging from the tunnel into the light.
I've been collecting original antique art for many years. I had room for my vast collection in my huge Texas house, but now that I'm living in a small TN dump, most of my art is hidden with mold and mice in closets.
my frustration knows no bounds.....
Funny, I've never been a fan of Kincaid either, but this one gave me the feels. I'm so sorry about your art collection going to seed, as it were. Bittersweet memories, no?
Deletethe light in darkness is what appeals to me, you can tell that by my blog look. I used to do what you mentioned, go with what looked best with furniture that i could afford. which was never ART... I cant make myself by expensive art even if I love it because the other thing you mentioned. my taste change. I buy It I love it I someday don't love it anymore.

and they have not been changed ins the past 15 years, I last printed and hung something in 2015.
if i had MONEY there are a few of my things I would put on canvas, but then I would get tired, or maybe not, I am about to turn 78, so how long could I live? long enough to get sick of what i print and paid for?
Good point. I'm no longer interested in expensive art; some of these canvases nowadays are certainly reasonable.
DeleteI don't think I know anything about art, and to be honest, I never noticed what's on our walls at home. I've just discovered some framed pictures I never realised we had.
ReplyDeleteIt's the same when I visited art galleries years ago. How long do you have to stand and admire a masterpiece painting? Five minutes? Ten? More? I can see a whole gallery in less than ten minutes and go out for a beer.
I really don't care for the colour combinations, and the brush-strokes and whether it is an impressionist or cubic or whatever painting. It's just a picture in a frame worth a few pence not the millions people pay for it.
You've probably changed your opinion of me now!

Nope! I've a lady friend who, after building a fabulous new home, adorned all the walls with oversize modern/impressionist (whatever) paintings. When she gave me the cook's tour, I couldn't even muster a polite platitude.
DeleteI have a couple of posters in my study, but that's it. One is of a batik a friend created, the other of a healthy, majestic timber wolf. We're simplifying.

DeleteMy walls have art pieces Joe and I purchased at Mayfaire over the years. Art doesn't have to match the sofa and purchasing what you like is what you should do. Follow your gut and your heart. That's all that matters. I LOVE doors and took lots of door pictures when we were in Italy so your door knobs pictured above speak to me!! Love ya! xo

DeleteWhen Mom passed, all the family got to choose favorite works of art to keep for themselves. Among those are several wonderful paintings done by my Dad's sister - she was so gifted! I think Virginia has inherited her talents.

ReplyDeleteWhat a neat post!!! I tend to have a lot of things with sayings. I love that. I know some don't but I do. I find it encouraging. I do churches and tend to drawn to artwork with churches or old buildings.
Funny you should say that, Chrissy. I've something (lingering) in my Amazon cart that's different positive sayings on old barnwood. Still haven't decided if it's coming to live with me, but I'm drawn to the rustic.
DeleteI have that same Kinkade calendar and loved that picture. The current one for August is lovely too. The things on my walls are things I love that have some kind of meaning to me. I don't care much about trends or fashion or style. My house is filled with memories and "treasures". I love those pictures you shared from Pinterest...the doorknobs always speak to me...("Closed Doors, Open Windows"). And yes, "let there be light". We need THE LIGHT to shine in our hearts and lives and homes more and more in this increasingly darkening world. This was a delightful post!

DeleteHonestly, it depends on my present mood as to what is on my walls at any given time. Right now, I am transitioning to Autumn decor so that's what is going up. Really, I don't keep a lot on my walls because I don't like for my small home to look cluttered but everything is something that I love. I'm not a trendy person by no means and many times I will find a quote or maybe even a simple sketch or drawing from my grandblessings, and those things are what I like. Simple and sweet.

DeleteI have never bought art that matched my furnishings. I buy what I see and love and am mostly drawn to faces. Not portraits, but slightly outside of realistic faces. My favorite is one made of old Hoover vacuum parts that is a cyclops. I know it is not for everyone, but I am crazy about it.

DeleteThose are very interesting photos you shared. I do love the ones you have on your wall too! I have a wall of canvas in my home of photos that I have taken on trips we have taken. We have some painted pictures that Mark's grandmother had pained. Mark has duck art in his office.
ReplyDeleteLove those finds from Pinterest! I have lots of phamily fotos and am planning to redo our bedroom walls. I have one original painting, it actually belongs to Jeremy. Sharon gave it to him when he was born. Her friend Dana was a tremendous Native American Indian artist from Oklahoma. She lost her brothers to AIDS and she painted as a way to alleviate her pain. I must dig that little framed Indiana boy climbing through a barbed wire fence catching the seat of his pants on the wire and exposing the cutest little butt crack! Only Sharon.....You have given me an idea about wall ideas here. Once I redo the wedding wall I will do the windmill and country farmhouse hangings we have. Lucy even gave Avery the sweetest coffee mug with an vintage red truck on it. She's the best gift giver ever. Brittany, my DIL has the MIxtiles on their wall. It is neat and uniform and I like it but I am a mismatched personality person so there is that!
