If you didn't have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

I'd like to say something noble, like head up a neighborhood crime watch or perform volunteer work.  

But no, I'd probably just consume copious amounts of popcorn and read mysteries.

What's your favorite piece of clothing you own/owned?

My oversize fleece-lined collegiate hoodie.  It's indescribably soft and comforting.  And I don't have to worry about holding in my stomach - ha! 

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren't an issue?

I'd love to invest in a good camera, a (patient) tutor … then travel the country capturing black and white images of old, abandoned structures.

What would your perfect room look like?

I couldn't make up my mind!  'Going to pretend you said, "rooms", Terri. (*smile*)

When was the last time you climbed a tree?

Oh mercy.  I must have been 8 or 9.  Now I'm wondering where along the line I developed a fear of falling.

Tell us something you will do/did today.

Tom gets to meet his new primary care physician at the V.A. this afternoon.  Hopefully, I can coax him into splitting one of these at the nearby Red Robin!

Update on the lawn guy.  Dennis phoned Tom this morning to apologize (asking for a loan) and said, "That's not the kind of thing I do."  'Sure restores my faith in him being a stand-up kind of guy!

When sleep won't come, I've begun trying to fill my mind with pleasant thoughts.

Sad, but I have to agree ….. most folks find it easier to identify things they hate dislike v. what brings them joy.

So, I gave myself a little homework:  Identify 10 things I love (or strongly like) -- one for each letter of the alphabet.   Harder than I first imagined, I'm still struggling to complete my F's!

A Littler Life List

G'morning friends!

This week's edition is missing a few bullet points, yes.  I've not been listening to or reading or watching anything noteworthy … and last I checked, there's nothing fascinating going on in the kitchen. 
Instead, I'm …



Concerned

Back in March, when the community water rep came out to turn on our utilities, he volunteered (that) he was starting a lawn business on the side.  Would we be interested?   Because his quote was super reasonable, we've had Dennis out every two weeks.

   

I knew it was coming, darn it.  Tom grew tired of paying that money each month and purchased a riding mower last week.  

Because Dennis is such a nice and respectful young man - working to better his family - I've dreaded telling him we'll no longer require his services.   But before I could do so, he phoned Tom last week.  Are y'all ready for this?  Out of left field, -with no explanation- Dennis asked to borrow $400.  (Might as well have been $4,000!)  Awkward.

Of course, Tom explained he didn't have it, but now I'm concerned what sort of mess Dennis has gotten himself into.  And why should that impact us? All's I could do is give it up to God at this morning's services.

Grateful for

Tom's accompanying me whenever I spot an estate sale!  Aside from a few baubles, we're basically starting over with Christmas décor.  Rather than go out and buy a few random boxes of bulbs, I'd like to begin building a collection of previously-loved ornaments.

Loving

Isn't it ironic?  Oftentimes, when you give up searching for something -- when you least expect it -- another, better something falls in your lap.

The bar stools we brought from Arizona are far too high and impractical for this house … but I wasn't keen on spending money for new ones.  Then, day before yesterday I'd an hour to kill before swim class and spotted a little  'hole in the wall' thrift shop.  Except for weighing a ton, these are definitely 'fanny approved' and the wooden backs match our kitchen cabinets perfectly.  

Pondering

What do you do when you can't sleep?

Because I'm partial to flights of fancy, I've begun making lists.  Lists of my favorite things, that is … 10 for each letter of the alphabet.   

And, I've discovered this little exercise is harder than I'd have guessed!  Nevertheless, I'll be sharing 'A-B-C' in the next few days.  Hope you'll stop by!

Looking forward to

My upcoming hair cut.  So blessed to have found a gal who does a good job … at half what I was paying in Arizona!   

The first thought when I look in my mirror?  "Yikes!  I'm beginning to look just like the rottweiler."

Anything depicting harm to an animal.  A few years ago I completely lost it when National Geographic showed a lion hunting a pack of unsuspecting zebras.  Instead of sounding an alert, the idiot videographer just kept on filming. 

What's worth spending more on to get the best?

There's little I need/want in the way of material things, but I've a real fondness for good beef.  (Hellman's and Charmin, too!)

Tell us something random you want us to know about your new week.

I'm praying that Tom's audiologist is able to make things right tomorrow!  His new aids are purported to do everything except wash the dishes … but (among other things) they randomly emit this awful high-pitched frequency that causes the dogs to bark and me to make unpleasant remarks.

Embarrassed … but curious, too!   

So, we're enjoying roadhouse burgers when I glanced up at one of the big screen televised recaps:   

"Tom, why is the 'Tide' playing Green Bay?"   (No, no alcohol was involved.  Obviously, I'm in sore need of remedial logo recognition!)

 
Undeterred, I continued:  "Still. What do you suppose the outcome would be, if a powerhouse college team were to field a game v. a lesser NFL team?" 

 

Yep, I enjoy dwelling in the hypothetical …..

Pondering …

Music.  My taste in music.  What sort of music do I want played at my funeral?  (Morbid, much?)

For some reason, that's been on my mind.  No, I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, but one never knows!  

There was one Tom attended where -- towards the conclusion of the service -- the sound engineer cranked up the volume: Old-time, feel-good rock and roll erupted … just the way the deceased requested!

In particular, I enjoyed one scene from Susan's book, Hot Flashes and Cold Lemonade:  Rather than 'funerally' music being piped softly during visitation, someone went and retrieved a portable record player and a stack of Mitch Miller LP's. 

(My father would have loved that!)

Right now, I'm loving Al Martino ("Come Share the Wine") and others of his ilk.
Is this something you've given any consideration?

The way my granddaughter's wedding turned out Saturday morning!   A bit of a hurry-up affair, yes.  As we speak, Josh's parents are headed to the Ukraine and (understandably) he didn't want to be married without them.

Still, my son and Lois out-did themselves!  Their home and grounds looked professionally manicured ,,, even Mother Nature blessed us with a beautiful morning.

Hodgepodge: The Finale

1.  What has been the highlight of your summer so far?

Hands-down, my excursion back to Florida last month … part sentimental journey, part 'getting to know you.'    Man, if you've ever considered -- even a little bit -- hooking up in person with another citizen of Blogland … just do it!   Thank you Sandra, thank you, Terri!

2.  What do you wish you'd done more of this summer?  Less?

I'm kicking myself for not having joined the 'Y' earlier.   Prior to last week, there's no way in "h.e. hockey sticks" I'd have ever used 'fun' and 'exercise' in the same sentence.

Less?  I should say feeding my face, but I've enjoyed every stinkin' carb that's come my way.  Nope, no regrets.

3.  (What's) something you're looking forward to on your September calendar?

Grand #1 is licensed to wed!

4.  Best/favorite book you've read this summer?

A Killer's Mind.  No way I saw that ending coming!

Since the first time I saw Rogers & Hammerstein's Carousel, I've loved this song!

Still shaking my head at my recent good fortune.   

Remembering my own dismal experiences in high school, I wasn't particularly excited to be entering the Y's locker room last.  What a surprise to realize there wasn't a judgmental soul in the bunch … no, 'Miss Willer, you're not trying hard enough.'   All shapes and sizes … one fellow is 91 years young!  

We had a substitute instructor last Friday that brought her boom box (do they still call them that?) and we carried on for an hour to the likes of ABBA, Frank Valli/4 Seasons … and yes, the Village People (complete with the appropriate moves - ha!)

Being in the water, it didn't feel like I was exercising  … but whoa, I paid for it that night and the next day.  Baby steps!
