... on account we've early morning outdoor church services tomorrow.
Welcome back!
1. Outside my window
It's feeling hot-hot-hot!
But the cardinals don't seem to mind! This morning there were 6-7 flitting around the back fence ... trying to figure why the stone red bird was ignoring them.
2. I'm feeling
Stunned. And more than a little sad to learn a friend and fellow blogger, Rick Watson (Life 101) passed unexpectedly Thursday morning. I once described his posts as "Southern comfort in a demitasse." That man said more in a few words than I could fit on a whole page. More than a few of his sayings will live on in my vocabulary:
"Every day's a school day", or
"It's hotter than Satan in spandex"
We used to talk about getting together sometime for a cup of coffee, but never got 'round to it. You know how those things go. 'Think I'll re-read a few of the pages from one of his books tonight.
3. I'm curious
About something called a Heart Awareness Scan (aka, Advanced Heart Check). Have you heard of it?
Of all people, my hairdresser was telling me about it yesterday. A non-invasive, 10-minutes procedure, most major hospitals are now performing this 64 slice CT scan/diagnostic for a one-time fee of $199. One (seemingly-fit) lady claims she took it just to support her husband, then learned she had like an 80% blockage. Insurance won't pay, but I think that's it's a small price to pay for one's peace of mind! And, given the fact I refuse to do the stress test, I'm leaning towards getting this done.
4. One of my favorite things
Yummmm!
5. In the kitchen
There's a slow cooker been warming now for about 4 hours ... only 20 to go. (That's hours, not minutes.)
You see, Tom had the idea to soak mesquite chips overnight and smoke a roast on the grill. It smelled divine!
Except. He pronounced it done in less than 2 hours -- which should have been my first clue. Y'all, I liked to break a molar trying to chew. Even the blade on my steak knife trembled.
So, I had the bright (?) idea to stick it in a bath of broth and warm a long, long time. I'll let you know!
6. Good grief!
Can anyone else empathize?
And just last week I pulled a muscle in my shoulder while brushing my teeth. Ya, I'm talented that way.
* * *
Say, y'all keep hanging in there, okay?
You've got this!
Hugs, Myra

Oh my, sorry about your shoulder and also sorry that you lost a dear blogging friend. Two of mine passed much too soon also. I got to meet one of them in person, but not the other. Always sad. That heart test sounds interesting. I have had a stress test (chemical) and it wasn't that bad. My latest EKG was normal. Let us know if you decide to do the test. I would like to know about it.
ReplyDeleteI will! My cardiologist said "no" to the chemical stress test ... so I never went back. Ha!
DeleteI didn't follow Rick much but was shocked hearing about his passing. Too young!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of that scan but for the price I think it would be worth it.
Do let us know about the roast!
And of course in Phoenix in the summer, hot hot hot and hot is the way to go :)
stay safe and sane!
betty
Too young, indeed! I'm afraid the roast is a 'goner' ... but I'm keeping the mesquite-flavored broth ... reminds me of West Texas.
DeletePraying for Rick Watson and family.
ReplyDeleteI am curious as to why you sleep on the edge of a 12th story window. As for brushing your teeth; I suggest you do as I do. Keep your hand and arm still and move your head left and right and up and down instead.
You keep something cooking for 24 hours? I couldn't wait that long. Surely it is easier to eat it raw and to sit in a sauna for a while whilst it cooks inside us! Now that's an idea I should patent and make money!
God bless always, Mevely.
LOLOLOL! Now why didn't I think of that? I hope you're enjoying a very blessed day.
DeleteSo sorry to learn of the untimely passing of your blogging friend, Myra. I will keep Rick's family in prayer.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I MUST have my own pillow to get a good night's sleep. Danny and I are both that way, and always take our pillows with us when we travel. Oh, wait, what's that? Haven't gone anywhere for so long, I've forgotten what it's like . . .
Getting that scan does sound like a good idea, too.
Blessings!
I've never traveled with a favorite pillow; in fact, mine are all used and abused. Perhaps I should invest in one of the better brands?
DeleteBob rolls his eyes every single night when I get in bed because I have three pillows that I sleep with and it has to be the right one under my head and a little tiny one that goes under my neck and one that goes on my left side to hold up my chin. It takes me a while to get settled and to get the three pillows where they belong and that cartoon is me me me!. So sorry to hear you've lost a Blog friend. It hurts as much as the people that we see everyday. When something happens to one of my blog friends and I'm talking about it to Bob he always says we'll who is this and then I say it's so and so's blog and he says you don't even know those people he just doesn't get it. We do know those people! Waiting to hear how that roast turned out
ReplyDeleteI, too, have 3 pillows -- but rarely make it through the night without tossing and turning and flipping them over to the 'cool' side. Yep, I feel closer to my blog friends than most of those with whom I see in person.
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your friend Rick, sending thoughts and prayers for his family. The heart scan definitely sounds well worth it. Hope your roast came out ok, let us know. Yep, must have my own pillow at all times. Thanks for playing along Myra, have a happy Sunday :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martha. Because he was younger than me, it was shocking. Mom was right, "Every day is a gift."
DeleteI am shocked over Rick's death, I loved to read his articles, it was like, an old friend, know what I mean?
ReplyDeleteOk, here is the thing, Tom...when smoking stuff; wrap the item in foil. Let it "smoke" for 12 hours, 12 HOURS. You gotta keep the wood chips wet and the meat wrapped tightly in foil. It is a long process, but well worth the wait. There are plenty of ideas on the internet.
I haven't that the scan, heard of it though. There are quite a few "tests" I am refusing to do and will continue to resist, not that elective surgeries are open anyway, because their not.
ANYWAYS---Have a great day friend...you might want to take BBQ'ing away from Tom, LOLOLOLOL.
Thanks for the advice! No more smoking, but no-one grills a better steak. Unless something becomes necessary, I'm not undergoing any elective procedures. Just good to know that exists.
DeleteOh my, I'm so sorry to hear about Rick, that is a shock for sue. I know he'd been going to the doctor but had no idea it was so serious. Smoking anything is a long process and I know it takes hours and hours, I don't know if there is any redemption there. Hope you enjoyed your outdoor services this morning, I'm still streaming mine on line. Take care and God Bless, my that new still has me shaking.
ReplyDeleteI know, Ma; me, too, when I heard. I wanted to cry, but it felt like a kick in the stomach. All the accolades going up for Rick on-line are sure a testament to a life well-lived.
DeleteIt is hard to not mention someone like Rick, again and again. Such a shock. And yes, I loved those original 'quips' he came up with. I smiled again t reading those again.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes once doing a simple thing like vacuuming, I pulled something in my back. Then I felt like I had 'ruined' my shoulder once by tugging on a dong leash.
I did enjoy today's 6, as always....
The last comment Rick left on my blog he mentioned turning 70 this coming January. :(
DeleteI suspect his legacy will live on a very long time. As it should.
I was really stunned to hear about Rick. How tragic...and sobering. He will definitely be missed.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the Heart Awareness Scan, but it does seem like a very reasonable alternative to the Stress Test.
Can the wayward roast be saved? I certainly hope so. The long bath just might revive it...
BTW - I always sleep with three pillows. I can't stand to lay flat in bed.
I actually booked my scan today. My preferred hospital hasn't a single opening until December, so I went with Plan B next month. We opted for another 24 hrs. and yes, Tom pronounced the roast 'delicious.' (I wouldn't have bet on that. LOL)
DeleteSo sorry for Rick's passing. I am so grateful for all the times I met my blog buddies. What tremendous gifts of friendship. Of course remembering our lunch in Scottsdale eight years ago. Keep cool. It's hotter than Satan in spandex here, too.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's been 8 years! That memory still makes me smile.
DeleteI'm so glad I found your blog! I hope your shoulder is better! I had to laugh at "the blade of my steak knife trembled". Hah! Blessings, Jan
ReplyDeleteLaughter and Consistency
Thanks so much for visiting and taking time to say 'hi' ... I look forward to returning the favor!
DeleteI have a pillow I got at my chiropractor's office that has four different-sized edges (to support different sized neck curvatures). I have a edge for when I'm laying on my side and another if I turn onto my back. If I don't have the correct one I can't sleep.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! I'll have to investigate that.
DeleteI am so sorry about your friend Rick. I read and reread his last column. What a tremndous loss. I wish I Had known him. Prayers for his phamily. You crack me up! Sure we will adopt you and Tom both. My SIL Zach made a brisket. It is like eating melted butter so tender and juicy. He cooked in in the smoker slow for 5 hours and then performed his magic! He cooked bacon for the brunch yesterday on the electric smoker. He has lots of fun gadgets. I have heard of the heart scan. Of course the ins. co. won't pay for anything remotely related to good health. I had that $3600 blood test a few years ago to tell me my heart muscles were in excellent shape. Oh Lord pillows, I had a pillow for years that I loved. Bought a new one and ugh! Betsy the blogger bought the My Pillow. She swears by it saying it works for her. Interesting....The heat is getting to me. I took construction paper and covered the windows panes on the front door. I could no longer take the heat beating down. We have fans blasting and a/c and it is still hot upstairs. The basement is like a deep freezer. I have one of those neck drapes. You put it in the freezer and drape it around your neck. It is heavenly. Between that and my infrared heated pad for my pain in the low back I try to keep upright most days but it is hard. Bette David was right, old age ain't for sissies! Have a wonderful day. HUGS xo
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about that My Pillow, too. Yet, another blogger bought one last year and hated it. Good idea about the construction paper! I always wanted to live in a home with a basement ... where I could go live during the summer months.
