Sometimes I mourn the demise of hand-written letters. Yet, I can't remember the last time I actually wrote one of my own. How two-faced is that?
Realizing today would have been my father's 112th birthday, I went deep-diving in the cedar chest..... where I discovered 4 generations' sentiments.
So sad not being able to remember my father's voice,
but seeing his handwriting still warms my heart.

Postmarked August 1917, it reads (in part):
"Having nothing to do will write to you and send you a greeting before People's Meeting. It's an hour to wait from seven to eight. Can't spend it better than drop you a letter and tell you a part of what's in my heart ...

This is such a beautiful post, Myra, filled with treasured memories. Nothing can ever replace handwritten letters and cards. They reveal so much.

ReplyDeleteThat's just really neat. Made me smile too. I'm glad you've been able to hang to all these great memories. I miss snail mail period but guess I'm a Janis (two-face) too by not writing my own letters. I do send snail mail (real) cards to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. I think it shows care, concern and Christian love when actually putting a stamp on something, don't you? I hope it does anyway.

I love the letters, and the handwriting is so good, mine is awful and always has been.. your letters are too cute for words. the only letter I have is from my grandfather, maternal when I was 3months old, Dec of 1944. unusual I still have it, because I toss stuff, but his one is special, its on my blog .

ice cream on a stick, candy bar, coke or grape or youhoo were all 5 cents. daddy would be 111 Oct 21 this year.. so a year younger than you dad. Happy Heavenly Birthday to your dad and hugs for you.

ReplyDeleteI'm a letter writer at heart, and I've still have some from my mother and best friend, who passed away in 1995. I do love blogging and email, though. I don't think of them as cold and clinical, just a great way of keeping in touch.

I can't conjure my dad's voice either, but if he called to me, I would know it was him!! I think it will be the same one day when Jesus calls to us. We will know!! I don't write letters by hand anymore. It is much easier for me to type it out. I do sign them!! Hugs!

ReplyDeleteYes life goes on and we are feeling so blessed that despite the fraud horrible mess, the Lord is holding our hand and we are having our needs met and able to get some of the processes finished without going completely crazy. Dealing with Social Security direct deposits, pension, insurance etc. All new accounts and automatic payments, sometimes the weeds we have to go through to get things done are daunting. But we are doing it, we are blessed and will come out the other side much stronger, wiser and ready to face the next storm.
