It's a toss-up between Bridges of Madison County and Saving Private Ryan. They both gutted me.

But if you're still curious, here's a short explanation (link). While Googling, I learned all these years later people are still arguing the Private Investigator's "ethically correct decision that might be morally wrong."
Me? I suppose my parents didn't raise a Girl Scout after all.

Is Date Night still a thing?
Since the pandemic, we've only been to the movie theater a few times -- spending an absurd amount of $ for mediocre concessions, falling asleep (him) and/or getting cranky (me) at the commercials. I miss Looney Tunes!
Ah well. It's hard to beat home-popped popcorn and the feel of one's own recliner.
Someone (I forget who) recently said --
"Do you remember when you saw a Special Movie for the first time? Maybe it was White Christmas ... or Casablanca ... Titanic. That first viewing made an impression on you ... it created memories that stayed with you."
I remember 11-year-old me returning from having seen The Parent Trap. "Mommmm, you have to go see it ... it's the best movie ever!" Obviously, I'm no professional critic but there are several that are hard-wired in my consciousness.
A while back there was a movie challenge going 'round Facebook. It went something like this: "Every day for 10 days I select an image from a film that has had a big impact on me -- for any number of reasons. I post it without a single explanation and nominate somebody to take the challenge."
Nope, I'm not nominating anyone; there are no prizes for correctly identifying each of these. (But I will be super impressed!) This is just for fun.
In no particular order, here are my top 10.

The only film I recognise is the Sound of Music. Do you know, I actually cried throughout that film. The price of the entry ticket was such, plus popcorn and drinks and everything else, it would have been cheaper to wait until the book was written and read that instead.
ReplyDeleteAnother film that had a great impression on me was Babe which tells the story of a farm pig who wants to do the work of a sheepdog. I remember when the film finished all I wanted in the world was a bacon sandwich.
It's amazing how some films have an effect on you. I just loved the Marx Brothers films and Groucho's one-liners.
I fell asleep during ET. And like you, I love Looney Toons and cartoons like Tom and Jerry, Coyote and such.

DeleteI knew going in to the theater that The Passion directed by Mel Gibson would be difficult to watch, but wow, it was well worth it. Very profound.

DeleteI don't recognize any but sound of music, which I have never seen, but have seen outtakes of it enough times to recognize it. I think the volley ball might be from the one about being on a dessert island but can't remember the name of who was in it. I cry in all moves that have dogs in harms way
ReplyDeleteHave not been in a theater but 4 times in 40 years here, 2 of those were free, one the passion by our church, the other one I can't remember the name, it was instead of company picnic my work place rented the entire theater, with 4 movies playing and free eats and drinks and pick a movie.
I watch a movie at night and the next day can't tell you the name. I can give you a list of movies I remember the names of.
K-9, all four Lethal Weapons, all four Diehards. The Patriot, Witness, A man called Otto.. Conspiracy Theory, and I just realized, 6 of these are Mel Gibson. I have seen all of these movies many times over the years. Love Harrison Ford but can't remember the names

Ditto what you said about dogs and other animals coming to harm! That ruins it for me.

DeleteSo many great movies. I think the one that made me mad or just made me thru my hands up in the air was the latest John Wick movie. One.cannot.kill.off.the.main.character. Anyways--that's all I got for now, LOL.

ReplyDeleteI think great movies must be a thing of the past. They don't seem to want to entertain anymore but to indoctrinate with their agenda(s). I haven't been to a recent film since the 90s, or there abouts. We did go to the theatre to watch The Apostle Paul. The film was wonderful but the theatre experience was horrible. I'll never do that again.

Hated the ending: Old Yeller. I don't enjoy going to the movie theater anymore. I like my recliner so much better!! Hugs! xo

DeleteI only recognized The Sound of Music, which was probably my all time favorite movie ever. The Titanic was the last movie I ever saw in the theater. We haven't been back since! That was a LONG time ago!! As a child I remember seeing Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and the Planet of the Apes. (Charlton Heston Movies). And as a very tiny child I saw The Lady and The Tramp. I love it and wanted a toy cocker spaniel dog like Lady. My parents gave me one for my birthday that year. It was made of rubber and squeaked...that should tell you how old I was! LOL I kept it until the rubber cracked and the squeaker quit squeaking. LOL. Thank you for this fun post.

DeleteI was 15 when Pollyanna hit the movie screen and I agree with you, it's one of my favorite all time movies. I watched The Chalk Garden with Deborah Kerr and Hayley Mills just the other night. Hayley's character was such a drastic change from Pollyanna. Mr D has fallen asleep at the movies, we went to see Out Of Africa and he just couldn't hang in there. I was okay until he started snoring, now that was kinda embarrassing. Needless to say he got an elbow in the ribs!! Hope you have a great week ahead.

DeleteSince the pandemic we have not been back to the show and we used to go almost every week. I agree with the homemade popcorn and being home. Most movies come to one of our apps at some point. I have to say I love several of the movies you shared. There is a Danny Kaye movie that I have loved since 1959. "The Five Pennies"

DeleteI haven't been to a movie theater in years. I do like movies more than my hubby so that's one reason...besides the cost now. I love Sound of Music and just about every musical. Always saw the big blockbusters too but I can't even name some of them now.

ReplyDeleteLauren works as a financial administrator for the Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas, but her Dad has been a professional photographer for over 10 years. He has practiced on both of his girls for that long too. He truly takes amazing photos..and that's my "unbiased" opinion...
Dave and I had a family conflab about 8 months ago. Both sons were there and we went over our will and business info. We told them what we would like for our Celebration of Life..no weepy stuff or funeral for us. Just a time of reminiscing, funny stories and some serious stuff about who we were and what we wanted to attain in our lives. Its all in writing..but actually they can do what ever they want, I'll never know. But I do know it will be honoring and I hope fun too.
