Is this kitchen in the photo one that you would enjoy working in? Did you have one of those step stools in your home growing up?
At first glance, yes.
Except the 'schoolhouse green' would have to go. Maybe turn the stove sideways to make room for a little countertop/glorified spoon rest.
We never had one of those step stools, but I was sure envious of my friends who did.
What appliances are absolute necessities in your kitchen ... and what can you do without?
I can't imagine living without the refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. Slow cooker and instant pot, too.
You can take the stove/oven. Aside from breakfasts and occasional holiday fare, it gets less use than most. (Yes, I'm more than a little reluctant to heat up the house!)
After the plumbing debacle of 2018, we've no dishwasher -- and I'm good with that.
What items are always in your pantry?
Besides 'normal' baking supplies and spices, our must-haves include:
Him: chicken soup, Hormel chili (hot and mild), pasta, Coca-Cola
Her: JIF peanut butter, pistachio nuts; unsalted dry-roasted nuts
Them: Royal Canine (kibble)
How about your counter tops? Filled with things or empty?
I prefer a clean slate, but Tom's prescriptions, inhalers, Chromebook, etc. aren't going anywhere soon. (Picking my battles!) When our friends were over the other night, he boxed everything and moved it to the office.
Oh, have to show y'all this photo the day we moved in!

Now ...
I would love to pull up a stool and visit a while!! Sad to say, Mr D and I both have baskets we keep our meds in, otherwise they will get all mixed up and cause severe confusion. lol Yes, the stove needs some counterspace beside it, can't imagine anyone thinking it doesn't. Who planned that kitchen anyway? :) lol

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of keto, though, we just happened on something y'all might like. Buy small Keto Flour Tortillas, lather in real butter, cut into quarters, sprinkle with salt and garlic powder, bake at 350* for about 8 minutes or until a light crispy brown. OMGosh are they good! And keto. You'll never buy store bought chips again. I've been keeping a bag of these in the kitchen for quick snacks.

I try to keep our counters uncluttered but ... etc. etc. etc. *lol*

Deletelove the breakfast bar and those stools/chairs.. and i have always like the curtains under sink, like the photo at top and yours. Rod pocket curtains are a thing I love. every room in my house has them or rod pocket valances..
ReplyDeleteIF and I don't I had $$$$ i would live in a house with no kitchen. since I can't fridge, toaster oven and coffee pot are the top 3. also need the fridge to have a large freezer .. I wish we could pull up a chair and sit and talk for a while.
forgot, a bullet blender is a must. i used it twice a day
Tom bought one of those to make protein drinks ... then put it away a few weeks later. I'm going to go on a search and recovery mission!

DeleteJif creamy peanut butter is my main staple. I could survive if I have that and maybe some Ritz crackers or bread, but if not, then celery sticks, which would be better for me. I love your kitchen and would love to pull up a stool and sit at your breakfast bar. Not sure how one would survive w/o a stove/oven...I guess if you have microwave and a toaster oven maybe, and also some of those fancy new appliances like air fryers, etc., which I don't have. But I do use my stove top every day. In the summer I try not to use the oven that much, but still, some things require it. It's too hot outside to grill! LOL. I love the moving day photo! Been there and done that way too many times!! If I ever have to do it again, I'm thinking I'd leave most everything behind and start over with new stuff and not as much of it! LOL.

DeleteI do love your kitchen, Myra! There are so many appliances I do NOT want to live without, so it would be hard for me to choose. I do love our coffee maker, as you don't want to meet me on a morning when I haven't had any!

ReplyDeleteAs a side line: when I went to the hairdresser some time ago I asked him to cut my hair like Tony Curtis. He shaved my head totally bald. I got angry and asked him if he even knew who Tony Curtis was. He said, Yes; he'd seen him in the King and I three times.

ReplyDeleteTea Kettle and Coffeemaker for all but Nick. He is usually just a wintertime tea drinker. I have taken to drinking blackberry ice tea and making my own iced coffee. We have so many syrup flavors on the back of the counter !! No you can not take them away from me. I will cry and become desperate! I would love a huge kitchen. Hannah has a tiny kitchen but they are the two neatest freaks I know hahaha....oh my poor baby "I"! They tell strangers his name is Lil Jake! Thank you for his nickname, you are a doll!

DeleteYour kitchen is cute! We haven't had an oven for a couple of years now. We use the microwave and Instant Pot for cooking. We've had a dishwasher for about 50 years and still do the dishes by hand.

DeleteI enjoyed your answers. I have gone without a dishwasher for years at a time and don't even use it now. It just takes so long. I could probably do without the stove too since I use a lot of appliances.

DeleteI had a red step stool like that when my children were young.It often doubled as a high chair for my youngest to sit at at the table. My daughter is very good at keeping her counters here clear. Everything has it's storage space in the cupboards. I was the opposite and my counter top was very cluttered. There was no extra storage space in my old house.
DeleteI used to use the toaster oven instead of the big stove oven to keep the kitchen cooler I'm the summer. You could air fry, bake and microwave in the one I had.
That multi-faceted toaster oven sounds wonderful. That and your DD's kitchen. So happy for y'all!

DeleteI really fail as a good housekeeper. My kitchen is a small galley kitchen with not enough counter space. Hence the clutter that accumulates. I wish i had double ovens and a different place for the microwave...wish it was in a counter area enclosed. I also wish I had rolling drawers in my cupboards. Seems everything I want is always too high or way in the back..Sigh, that is an expensive dream for me.

DeleteGreat idea to turn the stove sideways! I don't have a dishwasher because the hole left for it was too small for one! Besides it takes as long to load/unload as it does to do the dishes!
