Do you have some books in your home?
Not nearly as many as I'd like ....
but neither have we dedicated library space.

Gosh, it's a hodgepodge (leaning mostly to mystery/thrillers).
Which is your favorite?
For sentimental reasons, those gifted my parents when they were little.
I wonder, do people still write these sorts of dedications inside?
Do you enjoy browsing around in bookstores?
One of my favorite pastimes once was visiting Old Hyde Park's Barnes & Noble (Tampa) -- not so much to buy anything but to experience the inviting aroma of seasonal beverages and warm armchair arrangements.
I think there's a nearby Books A Million, but I don't feel led to visit.
Do you think real books are clutter or do you just love having them around you?
99% of the reading I do anymore is on my Chrome. Maybe it's just me, but I think the presence of 'real' books adds to a home's charm.
What is the oldest book you've read and what is the newest book you've read (or are reading).
Not counting the Holy Bible, the oldest - House at Otowi Bridge
I'm presently reading a 2023 release by Mike Omer - Please Tell Me. It's too early to tell, but remember giving his A Killer's Mind 4* on Goodreads -- later wishing I'd said 5.

Very interesting post. I like the comment about books adding charm to a home, I agree. I used to support a home library. In the past I have had favorite authors, but must say seldom have I paid full price for books. I usually shopped yard sales and used book stores. I would have a favorite author at the time, now I think of Clancey and Grisham. Clancy started me on books when I paid full price for a BIG book called Executive Privilege. After that I was hooked. Now, sotra sadly, I am stuck on digital Westerns, thinking of a change. LOL Anyway we thought of you and Brother Tom and joked a lot as we past South Chicago. Love from Iowa

DeleteMy home is full of books. These printed words are my best friends. They take me places I could never visit and teach more about life than anything. Also, they can't be "altered" their skewed version of life or events by the loony left like anything on-line.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite genre is British thrillers, mystery, spy stories, then Medieval History. Lately I'm kinda getting into events from the Holocaust. Interesting to see history repeat itself. 💙

DeleteI have 12 books, they are in a small book shelf in the closet.. 7 bibles, 3 dictionaries, 2 Bible Commentaries. I have always read library books except for a few years of reading paperbacks. I never kept the books, i traded them 3 for 1 back to the store i bought them from. I only read fiction and once i read it, i leave it so no need to keep. I did for about 15 year keep two paperbacks that i read 3 times each but now i can't read anything but large print books and they hurt my arthritis. I am 100 percent kindle reader
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten those shops that trade paperbacks! One even went so far as to 'rent' new, off-the-press best sellers for a week at a time.

ReplyDeleteI have hundreds of books, and when I came to TN the movers "lost" half of my book collection (perhaps it was merciful.....). Reading has always been my greatest pleasure.
I used to read a lot of fiction, but lately I prefer non-fiction.
I used to haunt the wonderful huge Pickwick bookstores in Southern California (long ago). Pickwick was eventually sold to Dalton.....but there's still one Pickwick store in Hollywood.
I agree - - book collections add to a home's charm.

DeleteI used to be a voracious reader. I always had my nose in a book from a very young age.
ReplyDeleteNow I don't seem to do the same..maybe its just my age and the lure of the computer and then the laziness of sitting in my recliner in front of the tv.
Read all of the Ian Fleming James Bond Books..loved them and loved the series of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency..read them all.

Same here! I never would have dreamed I'd have to make a deliberate effort to put aside the internet/TV/etc.
DeleteI'm going to take Jenna Bush Hager's advice and read AT LEAST 10 minutes every day until reading becomes a habit.
That seems doable...Maybe I will give it a try too.

I love your answers and agree that books add to a home's charm. Personally I can't get into reading a book on a device though I sometimes so if a paper version isn't available from the local library. I find I read much faster on a device.

DeleteOh, I do love the idea of that little backyard library/she shed. I wouldn't mind having one of those, as long as it was air-conditioned and had a good view of the pond while I read. LOL. But I do most of my reading in the evenings after dark, so I'd probably be better off staying in the house. LOL. Yes, books do add to a home's charm. If that is the case...my house must be very charming. LOL. I keep threatening to get rid of some books, but it's like giving away an old friend. I will just leave it up to my kids some day. LOL. I love your parents' old books. And yes, if I am gifting a book to someone, I do write an inscription. I love it when people write them in books given to me. That adds to their personal charm. ReplyDeleteI particularly like dictionaries and encyclopaedias because they change subject every few seconds which is commensurate with my attention span.
The greatest advantage of having a library space at home is to stop people talking in the library. That's where I get peace from the family.

DeleteI love that library and cozy chair. I can't imagine a home without books. I bring out Christmas books to for the season. My parents were avid readers too. I have one granddaughter that wants to be a writer.

DeleteI think books add charm to a room too. One of my favorite books is a gift from a dear friend, she signed the cover with a sweet message which touched my heart. I consider it a treasure among my books.

DeleteI am in trouble with books always! But I will be giving Hannah all my children's books for Ignatius. Problem is I keep buying more for him. hahaha I love when people write inside books. Uncle Louie had a first edition copy of The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck. He let me borrow it. I loved it. I have the more modern generic copy myself. I am reading a bunch of new releases but I am waiting to get a copy of a book written by Daryl Strawberry and his wife Tracy. They had two totally different backgrounds and both ended up with addictions. Daryl played for the NY Mets and the NY Yankees in his heyday. God has kept him upright. Not that he is drooling over it, but he will be finally going into the Hall of Fame. When he was playing and always in trouble I remember my dad saying he's so goo on the baseball field but all we can is pray for him. So I did! I buy lots of second hand books with dedications inside. Sad how people do not keep those memories. I guess I am very sentimental. I hope you have a beautiful day!

ReplyDeleteOh my I'd love a little "reading nook" like the one you shared...how cozy. If I lived in a spot that would work, I'd love to have a free little library. I've thought of seeing if I could put one by my in laws house.
