Since our Bible Study's taken the holiday off, I thought I'd yak about our new book: Me, Myself and Lies. I suspect this is going to be my favorite.
Jennifer Rothschild's subtitle, A Thought Closet Makeover, seems written just for me. As some can relate, I'm my own worst critic. You should hear the unkind things I tell myself! Things I would never tell another.
Researchers say our inner dialogue includes 150-300 words per minute. Granted, most are neutral, but there's a powerful minority that's self-destructive.
I hadn't shared, but last Monday I interviewed for a part-time job that seemed perfect. On paper. The in-person meet was less than optimal, but I put aside any misgivings. Not 24 hours later I began dredging up every blunder, every 'could've' and 'should've.'
"Loser, party of one."
"No wonder they didn't call back."
What's sad, I remember there was a time I was sought-after. Years ago, a rep from the network told me, "S. says you're the best administrative assistant he's ever had." Could be he was blowing air, but it still meant the world to me.
Who knows? Someday I may be compelled to flip burgers ... but you can bet I'll be the best darn flipper in town. Ha!
💛
Anyway! Rothschild suggests we begin with a thought-closet make-over. With boxes. 6, to be exact:
C (is for): Cares and concerns
L: Likes and dislikesO: Objectives and goalsS: SecretsE: EternityT: Treasures (what matters most; our priorities)
I'm not going to answer it here, but she asks: "Which box is largest? Smallest?"
Things that make me go, hmmmm.
I don't know where this study's going, but I'm eager to start.
Hugs, Myra

Sounds like an interesting and thought provoking study! I will be interested to hear how it goes. My thought closet usually takes over during the night when I should be sleeping. By morning, however, I've usually forgotten what it was that was so important that it kept me awake 1/2 the night. Maybe I should write them down...and then again, maybe not. I figure if I can't remember them in the morning, they aren't worth losing sleep over. Re: the part time job interview. I am sorry it didn't work out, but then again, if it was going to be good for you, it would've worked out, so it's probably for the best that it didn't. If this is something you really need and/or want to do, I will be praying with you concerning whatever the next step should be. God always has a plan that is right for us...we just have to be patient and also listen for His voice to guide us. Praying! Have a blessed Memorial Day! Our Bible study group is taking off for the summer. We will start back up in September. Not sure if I like that or not, but in some ways, yes, and some ways no. I will miss the fellowship most of all. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Pam. The fellowship at study is what keeps me coming back.
DeleteBecause I don't need to find a job right now (knock wood), I'm going to sit back and wait for God to show me which direction to go.
It sounds interesting. Hope it works out well for you.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debby.
DeleteThe thing to remember is that you are now where God wants you to be. If it is His will that you are in a job, He will open doors. If it is His will you do something else, He will show you the way.
ReplyDeleteMany people have inner dialogues with themselves. The problem starts when they start arguing with themselves and answering back. A trick to avoid this is to have inner thoughts in a language your real self does not know, and therefore can't understand and argue with you.
Let us know how the Rothschild exercise works out for you. It sounds interesting and usually such systems help clarify one's mind. I usually write down what's "worrying" me and then focus on whether there is something positive I can do about it or not.
Praying for you. God bless.
LOL on the second language! I'm going to focus on your first paragraph and (try to) tell my inner thoughts to sit down and shut up.
DeleteI'm certain, Mevely, that God does guide His people. Just hand the situation to Him, and if it is His will, He will guide you as to which job to apply for. I have seen this in practice.
DeleteGod bless you always.
about the closet my thoughts are many and i will keep them to myself. ha ha.. i have to say the biggest box in my closet, should I decide to have one, is the first, likes/dislikes... i have millions of dislikes.
ReplyDeletehave fun, i know you love going and having fellowship. I would like to find a meetng that is for fellowship ONLY... nothing to listen to nothing to learn nothing to change. just chat my head off
There you go! Perhaps you could start a private group thread on FB. Vent-R-Us!
DeleteOh Myra, the new study sounds like it will be a "whole house cleaning". I think I may have to look into that book too. My closet and boxes are full!!
ReplyDeleteLove the last quote too.
Enjoy the holiday.
Sue
Thanks, Sue ... y'all do the same!
DeleteLove that quote and it's something I need to remember. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this study. I love Jennifer's studies. My self-talk is not very profitable either.
ReplyDeleteI've no idea where Jennifer's going with this ... but yes. I'll probably share from time to time when I see a nugget.
DeleteWhat an interesting study. I've haven't got the first clue how to answer any of them. Guess I'm wore out from working today.
ReplyDeleteI can remember when I was sought after too. It's sad that I guess "no one" wants me now because I'm old. I always had a job, though, not that I was smart or anything but I always showed up on time, wasn't impaired by drink or drugs, looked presentable, did my work & anyone else who needed help when I was done and didn't gossip. That went a long way. I'm appalled at the poor work ethic many have now.
Good luck on finding the right job! 💙
Right there with you, Pam. I guess these values are no longer in demand. 🥴
DeleteIt sounds like a fascinating read, and a book that's good to discuss as a group.
ReplyDelete👍
DeleteThis book sounds very interesting. I wil be investigating it!
ReplyDelete🤗
DeleteGod is always in control and His timing is always the best!! I look forward to hearing how the Bible study goes and the fellowship means everything. xo
ReplyDeleteAmen!
Deletenot going to say much, but as always, great read. When you said:
ReplyDeleteI'm my own worst critic. You should hear the unkind things I tell myself! Things I would never tell another.............
you have a distant cousin here. LOL Love you girl hug the Sax dude tight!
Hey cuz! 😃
DeleteIt sounds like a great book and group. I must be weird, but in my mid 20s I decided to stop being so hard on myself and learned to be my own best coach and supporter. It was a good decision.
ReplyDeleteNot weird at all. I'm so happy for you.
DeleteI think this younger generation haven't a clue on us older folks work ethics. I think the good Lord knew what he was doing, Myra...I prefer to look at it that way.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reinforcing my thoughts!
DeleteWhat we tell ourselves about ourselves can be so destructive to our confidence and the person God intends us to be. This sounds like such a positive study.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
💛
DeleteWhat a wonderful truth at the end there. Nothing can separate us from the Love of God.
ReplyDeleteAmen!
DeleteWoW, now I've got some deep (deeper) thinking to do. I can fill up most of the boxes with enough left over to go into box 2! My fullest box is SECRETS, me, myself and I have a lot of secrets. Very interesting post.
ReplyDeleteI can so relate!
DeleteOh my gosh Myra - I constantly tear myself down. I think I need the book and the help.
ReplyDeleteI find that the older I get - the less I am needed. At one time I ran a house - the kids - this and that - like a real person with a person - now I feel more like an object that really is looking for something. Lol - not sure exactly what I mean. But I think I get the job thing.
I do know what you mean, Sandie. Thank you!
