Hodgepodge #510

By golly, it's Wednesday once more!
... and y'all know what that means, right?

Let's play The Hodgepodge!

* * *

What's one thing you're excited about in the coming month?

Not much for me personally.
I'm thrilled my son and DIL are flying to Santa Fe and will be renewing their wedding vows at the church my parents used to attend.

Troy's taking Lois up to Los Alamos and I've begged them to take photographs -- in particular, my family's PO Box.  "You've got mail!"

What was your life like when you were 10 years old?

The biggest take-away, I think, was the realization not everyone liked me -- evidence by the bullying my friend Craig and I endured from our teacher, Mr. Hinojosa.  Today, I think he would have been canned.

My self-esteem nosedived; I'm pretty sure that may have played a part with my parents moving to the North Community.

Come Summer my grandmother passed and daddy had to buy a new car (Fairlane 500) he could ill afford to get us to Minnesota.  It was the first time I saw my father cry ... it scared me so!

What else?

I'd been zealously saving my quarters to buy a German Shepherd (from the Sears catalog!).

Instead, my folks surprised me with a Miniature Schnauzer puppy, I named 'Pepper.'

Everyone was singing "Cathy's Clown" ... dreaming of "A Summer Place."  Oh, and for whatever reason, my mom took me to Mrs. Combs' salon where my braids fell to the pink-and-black tiled floor.

Mortified, I felt my life was over.
Thank goodness, the Great Conductor had other plans.

What's something from your childhood you still enjoy today?

Reading,
my Hudson Bay blanket,
and
this sweet egg cup

What state (that you haven't been to) do you most want to visit?  Tell us why.

I've already been to all 50,
but given my reluctance to fly, I'll go with Florida; perhaps Tennessee's Appalachian mountains.

Do you like to drive?  Tell us how you learned to drive.

I don't dislike driving, but I'm more rattled by other drivers' behavior than I once was.  After dark's out of the question.

Learn?  Sunday afternoon's my father would take me up to the deserted parking lot at his workplace.  Shortly thereafter one (or both!) of us decided Drivers Ed class was a better idea.

I've few memories of that time, but vividly remember the handsome Highway Patrolman who came to speak to our class ... how he coined the term (they) use for a traffic light: "Stale green."

60 years later, I still use that term!

Insert your own random thought here:

Stay safe, and thanks for visiting!
Hugs, Myra

  1. The Sears catalog arriving was such a treat. I love Santa Fe. My mom grew up in Albuquerque and we always made a trip to Santa Fe when we visited my grandparents. A vow renewal there sounds lovely.

    1. Lois is so interested in visiting all I used to take for granted; my mom would be so happy.

  2. What I remember most was summertime visits with my grandparents who lived on a farm. We'd go every year to stay with them when my parents left us to go on a vacation of their own. I never minded be left there because I loved farm life. Every day was a new adventure. I've yet to make it to the New England States I've always wanted to see Vermont in the Fall. They say the colors then are beautiful. All good thoughts for today. Thanks for reminding me of days gone by and maybe some to come. Love, ma

  3. I enjoyed your answers, Myra. Love the picture of you in front of the Fairlane. The first car I bought was a 1967 Ford Fairlane which had a hole in the floor on the passenger side. lol Totally love your random thought. So often my prayers feel like that. Have a great day!

    1. Thank you for saying that, Cathy! Ya, that's the way my prayers feel, too.

  4. A dog? from Sears? Who Knew? we ordered from Sears while in KY and then i worked in Sears catalog for 5 years and 18 years for sears so did a lot of catalog ordering.
OH no on cutting your braids, I hurt for the child you were. each time mother put a perm in my hair i cried for weeks
my grandfather was killed in a car accident just before i turned 10. the insurance money bought a 1953 Pontiac to move to KY with. 10 th year was the start of 5 years of joy in KY, then came Christmas 1959 and my lfie went down the tubes, insecurity came to live in my heart and never left.

    1. How tragic, your grandfather being killed in that manner. At least, the insurance provided a new start.

  6. There are so many things I want to comment on. First, your note written by your daddy melted my heart. He wanted to make sure that you knew it was NOT your fault. Also, I didn't know you could buy a dog from the Sears catalog! Seriously? Or did you just think you could? I'm so impressed that you have been to all 50 states. You are indeed a "well traveled woman." Last but not least, I've never heard the term "stale green." I need to look that up :-). Have a great day today!

    1. Aw, thanks! Your question about 'ordering' a dog from the catalog prompted me to find a picture and add. Did you find the meaning of 'stale green' on line?

  7. My mother made me wear my hair short like that when I was young. I finally rebelled around age 12 and insisted that I wanted to grow it out. You remember how almost everyone had long hair in the sixties? Oh, and she wanted it kept short because she said I was a dead ringer for Caroline Kennedy. Ugh!
Driving? Can I get an Uber?
    Blessings, Myra!

    1. Aw, I remember little Caroline being an adorable toddler. Yes, I remember all the popular girls with their long straight hair and mini skirts I wasn't permitted to wear.

  9. I think I had that same haircut, courtesy of my mother, although I was about 6yo. Have a great week!

  10. Oh wow - I, too had a 5th grade teacher that abused me physically and emotionally. I'm sorry someone else like yourself had to go through that. I know what a difficult time that was for you and your friend.

How sweet that your son and DIL are renewing their vows in the same church your parents used to attend. Very special.

    1. I'm so sorry you, too, suffered abuse. Craig and I reconnected on FB several years ago to discuss that time. Thankfully neither of us is bitter. (Much, lol)

  11. Thank you, Mevely, for sharing your memories with us. How awful to be bullied by your teacher.

I too practised driving in an empty parking lot. It was the safest place to go round in circles. It was the days before seat belts. The instructor asked me to stop and I pulled hard on the hand brakes. His head hit the windscreen and he said, "That's not the ******* way to stop a ******* car!!!"

I like your egg cup ... and the random thought.

    God bless you.

  13. My little farming community in Ohio had lots of back roads to practice driving on. I don't remember any parking lots big enough to drive around on. I am glad that Florida is still on your list of a state to visit!! Anytime!! Joyce gave us another fun Hodgepodge!! xo

  14. I am upset, something ate my comment. I loved this entry. ESPECIALLY the thoughtfulness of your dad to take the time to make that note that he understood. Also I liked you beside the Fairlane. ;-)
Oh yes, I loved saltines and milk in a glass. I still enjoy that most nights.
I think I might hit something on this new keyboard. the keys take a much lighter touch than I am used to....
Anyway I did enjoy you answers and the entry. Oh yes and I am looking forward to visiting the VA to get my implants updated... I am wondering what they do... :-O
    Love from down here
Sherry & jack I hope this does not get lost...

  15. Oh my goodness, sweet lady, I have my own story about discovering that not everybody liked me. And, yes ma'am, I also had all my hair fall to the beauty shop floor, only to discover that I do not look good in short hair! Ugh! Self-esteem in the toilet! Your random thought pic hit right on the nail head!

BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving the link for Donna Ashworth! Also, may I send you a Facebook friend request?

    Grace & Peace,

  17. When I was ten our school was way overcrowded and there were 50 kids crammed into my classroom. I don't remember much of that year, which is a blessing given what you went through! Bless your father. That random thought is priceless. A reminder that we don't have to be
    perfect to be lovable.

  18. That is lovely about them renewing their wedding vows. So special. So sorry about the bullying in school. Sorry about your grandmother and seeing your daddy cry. Sorry about your braids too! I don't care to drive after dark either.

  19. Wow, there's a lot here. Congratulations on your son and his wife renewing their vows. That's a wonderful thing these days. Oh, bullying from a teacher??? That is terrible. I'm glad your daddy wrote what he did on your report card. I hope that teacher was fired at some point. I'm glad that God redirected your life to a better place. I'm trying to remember when I was 10...I met Gloria Swanson on my birthday and had my picture taken with her. (I really had no clue who she was, but my parents thought it was pretty special). I don't like to drive at night much anymore either. I only do once a week for choir practice at church (except during the summer, when it is daylight at night but we don't have choir practice. Go figure!) I love that last picture of what God said, etc. This post was very special. You are also very special, and I'm so glad to know you, dear Myra.

    1. How you touch my heart, Pam. No, I think Mr. H is still alive and 'well' -- one of my classmates saw something where he and his wife celebrated their 72nd anniversary. (Only the good die young, right? lol)
      Love ya!

  20. Ugghh bullying is tough. Love your stories though. Wow..all 50, that's awesome. I get rattled by others behaviors too and I don't care to drive at night. Loved the meme at the end.
