I wasn't up for Wednesday's usual Q+A, but still want to check-in. How the heck are y'all?

Grateful
The contractor snafu's resolved. They wound up sending a team out of Birmingham Monday afternoon. Shortly before nightfall, hands were shaken, and we've no worry about leaves accumulating, clogging up the gutters.
But! As they were preparing to leave, another city cop pulled into the drive. Remember when the first team walked off the job, accusing us of calling the police on them?
Well, according to our neighbor (who recently had work done) the cops routinely patrol the whole of Coosada's 7.13 sq. mi. -- on the lookout for work trucks. If the worker can't produce a Coosada business permit, they're ticketed and asked to leave.
Tom asked the officer, "Does this mean if I have someone come cut my lawn they have to have a permit?" "Yes."

Our new Bible study, Psalm 23. New-to-me, I've never before wept during a study. Yet, watching Jennifer Rothchild's presentation Monday morning, had me fumbling for tissues. If anyone's interested in watching, here's the 30-min. session. (Can you tell, she's blind? I sure can't.)
Nostalgic
So, I was the first to notice on FB where a former boss passed. Immediately, I PM'd a former colleague. "Did you hear?"
... which prompted a call, and another. A PM from a former manager.
All of a sudden, it was 1990 all over again. Memories came flooding back, photos of our younger, silly selves were exchanged. And this, heartfelt PM from his boss. In part, "It is a once-in-a-lifetime group of the most talented people I have ever worked with. Every time I look at that picture, I feel so lucky and honored to have worked with such great people, professionally and personally. And Myra, you were a tireless worker and brilliant in every way; I miss you and the team every day."

Yes, I wept.
Seriously. Except for the work family I enjoyed in West Texas, this is the only time in my life I looked forward to going back to work each Monday. As another AE commented on Frank's memorial page, "Some stories just can't be made public."
Another, "Those were the days. An HR nightmare."

Part of me wants to attend his Celebration of Life next month in New Orleans, but no. It's better to remember a favorite song: "The Way We Were."
... and life goes on.

PS: Personally disgusting is many of the permits required by greedy local governments. Florida has many of those. NC is trying to catch up. but even cutting lawns???? OUCH.

DeletePS: BUT but I have NEVER in my history of building heard of local police checking permits, only authorized inspectors. Until today I have had a puzzle playing in my mind about your project and the POLICE!
ReplyDeleteWe were having the old gutters removed and seamless, wider ones installed. Talking to someone this morning, I guess this is a normal thing, to protect homeowners from fly-by-night types. Every day's a school day!
Deletewe have the same permit thing here, any work done on our property has to be permitted and it is up to the HOMEOWNER to make sure they have one and we can get cited for not checking. I saw the woman who cuts the grass for 3 of our neighbors get a citation 2 weeks ago. she parks in front of our house, her long rig is the size of a semi and when the cop stopped, I said to bob, she doesn have her 3 foot tall orange cones out in front and back. required if parked in street to put cones out to warn drivers. she got a ticket, and was cussing and carrying on so she will get another one. might as well do what they say. Each time we hire work i freak out until I see a permit. for the roof, I even had to make sure the permit they left here was GIVEN TO THE INSPECTOR. I freaked until he came a week later to get it
ReplyDeletesomething new is we have always put any/all things at the curb, sofa, chair etc and city picks it up. NOW we have to CALL for pickup and there is a charge of 10 or more to pick it up. If we put something out and DON"T call they can charge up to 300, depending on what it is.
they did not warn us, I stumbled on it while look what we can place at the curb.
Now I NEED to know why you are the only one in white? sorry for the loss of your friend and I have never had a job I enjoyed or wanted to go to... you were blessed. I did have a ton of friends that I still miss and keep in touch on FB
Crazy! I suppose city municipalities are grabbing for dollars anywhere they can. The 'white' suit was actually pale pink/peach with a white satin blouse and pearls. (My present self is going, 'eeeew', lol) I was asked if I wanted a tux, but turned it down, thinking it wouldn't look feminine. You can bet the following years' shows I didn't say 'no'!

Oh my goodness - I can't believe that about the police!! I had no idea people had to have a permit in order to cut grass. Wow! I love the heartfelt words your former co-worker wrote. It is such a blessing to work with a good team and to have fun along the way!!

We get old, eventually our day will come and I always wonder if anyone will remember anything good! LOL. Sending you (((hugs))). I can't believe how nit-picky some towns are about permits, etc., for cutting grass???? You gotta be kidding! Our county is pretty particular about permits for things too, which you wouldn't think so if you drove around the area and saw how many old broken down trailers and houses there are with trash everywhere, etc. I wish they'd do something about that instead of picking on the people who are trying to do something to improve their property! Oh well, they have to earn their keep somehow. I loved the picture of your work group. Someone else asked and I wondered too, why are you the only one wearing white? Your position must have been different than theirs. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteLike I was telling Sandra (above), the 'old' me thought wearing a tux wouldn't look so feminine. Besides, I was only their Sales assistant --not a manager or an AE. You can bet the next years' shows I said 'yes' to the tux! (Thanks for asking!)
