What's your opinion of Halloween?
I don't dislike it, but really miss the Halloweens of my childhood.
More often than not, my mother would sew my costume. I believed she could do anything -- but she drew the line when I asked for a "Flying Purple People Eater" costume.
I'm the clown (jester?) preparing for Central Elementary's class parade.
In my father's uniform ... and yes, that was his (real) pistol.
Things were sure different back then.
We knew just where to go for caramel apples, handcrafted popcorn balls ... and whose house handed out nickels and dimes.
Memories are important. Some of them are seasonal good times. What fall memories and traditions can you share with us?
The only thing that comes to mind are attending high school football games -- the crisp mountain air feeling delicious, even as we'd shiver in the bleachers.
Well, and this wee pooper. (heh-heh)
Made of cast iron, it originally belonged to my father and his siblings.
My dad would insert a little ash pellet and strike a match. The dog would 'do' the rest (pun intended), much to our glee.
Stews, soups and chili dishes warm the tummy on chilly fall days. Have you a good recipe to share for a good fall dish?

My former husband and I were rabid fans of the Dallas Cowboys, and for a few years attended most home games. I subscribed to the Cheerleaders' monthly newsletter; and to this day, the Cowboy Wives' cookbook is a favorite.

Oh I do love that dog. I remember those pellets you light up and they make poop of ashes. But we never had a dog to do it with.

Over here the Halloween tradition has caught on over the years. It's so expensive though. Last week I saw a plastic skeleton in the shop for £35 ($42.48). I don't know how that compares with your shops. When you consider all the other toys and sweets and goodies one can/has to buy it would cost a fortune.
Also, on 5 November we have bonfire night with fireworks and parties.

I just wish matches still smelled like matches. I love the smell of the old matches... Bob was a rabid fan of Dallas Cowboys and they are till his favorite team, he never misses their games, but he gets a little rabid when they do dumb stuff. he has 2 cowboy shirts and somewhere there is a photo of Max the dog in one of bob's cowboy shirts dancing with bob in the living room

ReplyDeleteIt amazes me that when a time of inflation and the 'short' dollar that folks can spend $$$$$ on yard decor and costumes. Victor mentioned the Skeletons' cost. I noticed one at Lowes for the $90s.
Anyway YEP enjoyed the visit and your costumes. Also the first time I ever did seed a snaggled tooth skeleton. LOL Amazing that video was of a 1908 happening. WOW

ReplyDeleteHappy Halloween. My kids always loved this holiday and really had fun with it. One of sons would lay covered in leaves and they pop up and scare the people coming to our house for a treat. I loved it too, because they did and had so much fun. Kids do make a difference in our lives. Hope you have a safe and Happy Halloween! Love, ma

Weren't those candy apples and popcorn balls so good back in the day? And I remember one house that gave out nickels. Five cents bought a BIG candy bar at the candy store!! We didn't have to worry about drugs, poison, or razor blades back in the good old days. I enjoyed your post, Myra. xo
ReplyDeleteThe video was cute...so halloweeny! The yummy pot of green chile, chicken and rice looked so good I went to the website and printed the recipe. Now I hope I really, really make it. Halloween was always fun, the thing I remember most is teasing my mother....Halloween is her birthday and we always told her the witches brought her. When I was a little girl I thought that was so funny. ☺☺
ReplyDeleteSome of my best memories are Halloweens past. I'd go out with my two next door neighbors. Diane and I were in the same grade and Laurie was a year older, starting at age 7 and we were perfectly safe. The older kids who were out looked out for younger kids and we knew just about the entire neighborhood. I miss the feeling of safety and freedom that I had growing up.
ReplyDeleteOK now I am wanting the chicken and rice! Looks so good. I miss the old Halloweens too and its been a while since I got some caramel apples. I usually buy them for my daughter in the fall.. even though she is grown up and has kids she still loves them! Thanks so much for joining in.

ReplyDeleteFun fact to know and tell about me is that my mother told me that Purple People Eater was playing when they rolled her into the delivery room to have me. It hit #1 on the charts in June 1958 and that is when I was born!!
