Hello friends!
I've no good excuse for failing to blog last week. While there were no "whoopie" moments, thankfully there were no real lows.
..... unless you want to count the rotten head cold that found me Christmas morning. Yep. In a misguided -- and unsuccessful -- attempt to find eggnog, I'd gone out in the (feels like) arctic night before without so much as a scarf.
Thankfully, by yesterday I felt well enough in time for Pastor Janet and another couple to join us for coffee and sweets.
Where's Grandma Adele's candy, you ask?
Ha!
In spite of purchasing a fancy candy thermometer and following my mother's recipe to the letter, it was "Once! Twice! ... You're Out!
Suppose I can always turn this into a planter.
We were so busy yakking, I forgot to take any more pictures.
But trust me, there were smiles all about.
Even Tom -- who finally met with a pain management specialist Thursday and got a spinal steroid injection. (Cross fingers this takes!)
Presuming we'll still be awake, midnight will likely find me looking U-KLY in fat socks and an electric throw blanket ... not caring who's on Dick Clark's Rocking whatever.
Perhaps more so than any other major holiday, New Years Eve ushers in a wave of nostalgia (that) I normally keep at bay the rest of the year.
Maybe someone else can relate? I love to hear your stories!
The Roaring Twenties ...
We ladies of Beta Sigma Phi would have had our hair 'done' -- ratted to the nines. (Thank goodness no photographic evidence exists!)
Clad in formal wear, husbands and wives gathered at the civic center to consume adult beverages and dance to a live band.
One time, on the spur of the moment we asked baby-sitters to spend the night, changed out of our gowns, piled in someone's panel van and drove to Fort Worth to attend the Cotton Bowl. Seated on those concrete tiers in the freezing sleet probably qualifies as my top "never again" moment in time.
It was the Best of Times ...
My 30's. Most NYE's were spent in the kitchen prepping (what seemed like) hundreds of my hubby's famous cabbage rolls for the next day's Open House.
Fast forward ...
Years later. The only other memorable Eve found Myra throwing a major Pity Party for herself. Silly me still believed no-one should have to spend New Year's Eve alone.
The fellow I was seeing at the time -- a cruise ship officer -- was mandated to be on the bridge at the stroke of Midnight.
Just in case. No-one knew what to expect.
Remember Y2K?
We chuckle now, but there was so much unknown.
We filled our car's gas tanks and stood in line at the ATM.
Obviously, today I'm much older. (Not so wiser, but I try!)
I've an abundance of aspirations. Expectations, too.
But I don't want to set myself up for failure.
I'll leave you with a quote I favor:
"There are years that ask questions, and years that answer."
(Zora Neale Hurston)
Dear friends, I pray 2023 will amaze and delight you with her answers.
Cheers!
Myra

In my 78 New Years Eves, I have stayed up until Midnight only 5 times.
ReplyDeleteThe rest were spent as they will be tonight, asleep by 8 and waking up before the party people go home.
Once in 1995, we went to the pastors house to watch a football game ON THE WALL OF HIS PATIO. the players were 7 feet tall, I nearly died of boredom and thought it would never get 12 so I could go HOME and to bed.
Once was with a warrant officer pilot of a helicopter. Newly divorced, both of us, we went to a party at the big downtown hotel on the waterfront of Savannah GA... I was falling asleep, he was bored, we went to his home and watched On Golden Pond, which was more boring than the party and I went home.
I just wish someone would have a 3 or 4 am party and then i would be on my game and enjoy it.
signing off and Not a paryt girl, also not a night owl.
Chuckling about you being bored at that hotel party. That sort of thing was always a coveted dream date. Nowadays, I'm glad that sort of thing's in my rearview mirror.
DeleteJust back from church. Prayed for you and Tom and family.
ReplyDeleteWishing you all a Better New Year and all good things you wish for yourself and your loved ones.
God bless always.
Thank you, Victor. I'll attend services tomorrow morning and be sure to return the favor.
DeleteI don't have nostalgia but rather a sense of looking forward, hopeful for bigger and brighter things.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful!
DeleteSorry to hear that you got sick. Glad you felt well enough to get together for coffee and sweets. On my on that pan. I know I will be awake, we like to toast the New Year with champagne. I remember doing a lot more when I was younger. I do however believe that the pandemic slowed us down. I do remember Y2K. Nice quote.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family.
God Bless You.....
Thank you so much!
DeleteI hope 2023 gives you many wondrous answers too. I have to laugh at the candy...looks like something I would do. We went out to lunch and I went into the grocery and we will just be at home together and probably asleep before midnight. Hubby has to preach in the morning and needs to be fresh. I'm so sorry you've been sick, but it's good to hear you are on the upswing. Take care my friend. and happy new year!
ReplyDeleteI tried soaking that pot 4 days, even scrubbing it with oven cleaner -- to no avail. Oh well. Happy New Year to you and Tracy!
DeleteI love that quote, Myra. That's so how I feel! And that nostalgia thing? It really hit me hard at Christmas, and I thought I'd never leave the past to enjoy the now moments. But, I have, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteChoosing to move on into the New Year with determination for a better 2023 than 2022.
Here's hoping those shots help Tom to feel better, and am happy to know the worst of the old head cold is behind you.
You're so right! The past is a lovely place to visit, but I want to LIVE in the present.
DeleteNew Year's is a mixed bag for me, some nostalgia and some looking forward. I miss the NYE's of my childhood when all the family would get together. The best years being the ones we spent at a cousin's camp with about 30 of us crammed into the cabin...the kids in one room playing games and eating snacks, the adults in the kitchen playing cards and drinking adult beverages. At midnight we'd get together to eat the required pork and sauerkraut (sardines for my dad and few of the others). We'd all put money outside in a bush before midnight and bring it in afterward for money luck in the new year. Those were good times.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting tradition! We had nothing like that. Your childhood memories sound really delightful.

Happy New Year to you, Sandie!
DeleteI noticed that you have nuts in your antique Auld Lang Syne cup. That's a good idea. I still haven't put anything in my cup because I didn't want to ruin it.
ReplyDeleteAs for New Year's Eve - - I'm just a lone (lonely?) voice in the wilderness, howling with the coyotes.
I hope you and your family will have a bright and blessed new year!
(I haven't yet written my New Year's Eve blog post, but hopefully I'll do it before midnight....)
Ya, the Auld cup gets used twice each year -- on 12/31 and my own New Year/birthday.
DeleteI don't know about bright and blessed, but I'm grateful for another chance to get it right!
To be honest, I haven't given it much thought that this is NYE and tomorrow is a new year...people keep saying to me that they will see me next year, and I keep thinking 'why so long?" Then it hit me, OH, that's tomorrow! LOL. I am ready for bed now, it is 7 p.m. I want to to go get my shower and get in my pj's and go to sleep. Tomorrow when I wake up it will be a new year, and I'll just have to remember to write 2023 on my checks and correspondence. LOL. Loved your post. I guess I'd better get a move on. Hope you feel much better soon. No fun being sick anytime. Good night! I'll talk to you again next year! LOL.
ReplyDeleteUh-oh. I hadn't thought about remembering to write 2023! I need to take another couple Tylenol myself and put on my PJ's -- the fashionable attire for those of us of a certain age, LOL.
DeleteSeems many blog friends have been sick during Christmas - So far so good for us. Happy New Year. I'm staying home with my husband, the dog and my cat. We'll probably be in bed before midnight - only to be awakened by the neighbors.
ReplyDeleteHome with the fur babies is the best place to be!
DeleteHappy new year, Myra! Wishing you abundant blessings in the new year!! I chuckled at Y2K memories. We sure didn't know what to expect, the way the media played the doom and gloom cards. Nothing happened. LOL Peace & hugs!! xo
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year blessings, Terri!
DeleteHappy New Year! Six minutes to go here and I'm catching up visiting my fellow bloggers. Can't think of a better way to welcome 2023. ❤️
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
Delete'tis sad at times when I look at how Holidays and spedcial times meant so much, but late in years, seems to be another day.
ReplyDeleteBUT we know it is a NEW YEAR that in our wildest of drems in our 20-30 time frame,WE never expected to see!
Yes I remember Y2K.
Thinking of you and Tom. Hoping and praying that all health issues get uder control.
AND so sorry to hear of the COLD. I do know that special times are NOT the time to handle a COLD.
Love to you two & families. From Florida
Sherry & jack
So, I'm not the only one? (*grin*) We were just talking how some things feel like they happened only last year -- not a decade (or more) ago.
DeleteWe have spent many at home NYE through the years because that is just the way we are. The kids on the other hand, gather at Jeremy & Brittany's for fun and game and silly sibling times. Hannah rang us up at midnight ( 10:10 PM here) to wish us well. Jake had just turned in as he was going to work at the crack of dawn. Y2K what a wild time that was. But it taught us well I suppose. We are now walking into the unknown. I just keep Jesus close by my side. It feels good to visit friends here. I have had some hard days because life is, well...it is hard. I hope you feel better soon. I keep my Collodial Silver and Elderberry Syrup on my nightstand. I use the Vicks Shower Plus and also my nasal rinse at least 4 times a week. When I feel let down, I lie down. We are spending one more quiet day tomorrow an expecting more snow. The brutal cold is the worst but grateful for heat and a roof over our heads. I wish you a beautiful and blessed New Year. Prayers for you and Tom always and forever.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for these tips! I'm feeling lots better now, thanks in part to that 'care' package you sent containing the cough drops and Vit. C ... remember?
DeleteHappy New Year to you and yours ! It was one of the best New Year Eve's for me, visiting family in Florida. Sadly we are too far away from where Jack lives to visit with him. It's been so nice to bask in the sunshine and blue skies here ! I always look forward to a new year, hoping that it will be better than the last one. Not that 2022 was terrible, but there is always room for improvement! I try to make every day count for something! They are such a gift. Love, ma
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful philosophy, Ma! Hope you enjoy the Florida sunshine; we're expecting another round of severe storms this afternoon. It's always something!
DeleteYeahhhhhhh we were in bed before midnight and not meaning to sound like a Debbie Downer, but things are not the same with our son not here anymore. Although, I will say the people behind our house had a humdinger of a party until 4 am complete with fireworks and gunshots. sigh
ReplyDeleteDon't even apologize for sounding down ... I don't blame you in the slightest! Those neighbors sound so rude; I hope they don't own little pets or have anyone in their household suffering from PTSD.
