The Christmas Chair

... and more snapshots from an extraordinary Ordinary life.

11 months out of the year, this wee chair sits at my bedside, holding my cell phone and water bottle.
The rest of the year, however, it occupies a place of honor under the tree.

Long ago, in a land far away
See it there, holding my book?

It started out fire-engine red, before my dad took some leftover paint to it.
You can still see bits of the original red peeking out.

This trio may be my favorite.
Mother's book given her (I'm guessing) about 1920.

Not to be forgotten!
One of two horse collars belonging to my grandfather.

What I wouldn't give for just one glimpse of my mother and her parents in that sleigh, bundled up to their noses against the harsh Minnesota winter night.

Jingle bells, Jingle bells, Jingle all the waaaay ....

Small-time farmers, my grandparents hadn't much in the way of material things.  In fact, my mother recalls she would receive but ONE Christmas present each year ... and was happy for it.

More recently ...

Yes, we had a wonderful time Thursday night.  The show was ah-mazing ... an experience for the senses.

At Troy's favorite eatery. We enjoyed one of the best seafood dinners I've ever had!

Great conversation and thankfully, a great driver.    Even having been up since 3:30 that morning, they got us safely out of downtown and home by midnight.

Still jazzed, I sat sipping a nightcap and playing word games for another hour. I don't know about y'all, but I can't remember the last time I stayed up past the crack of 9!

And so it begins ...

Thankfully, I've only wrapping gift bags left to do for the Ladies Study brunch tomorrow morning.

I promised to bring Conecuh (sausage) and cheddar, but now I'm wishing I'd said Potato Soup.

Thanks to Cathy at TCKK, Tom's got a new cold-weather favorite!  It's so ridiculously easy, I thought some of you might like the blueprint ... or my variation thereof!:

Cover bag (28 oz.) Potatoes O'Brien with
box (32 oz.) Chicken Broth (I used low-sodium)

Bring to simmer on stove-top ... est. 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, in smaller saucepan, mix Pioneer Peppered Gravy w/ 1-3/4 c. broth.

Pour gravy over potato mix, stir well and transfer to 6 qt. slow cooker.  Cook on high 1 hour.  You can season to taste, but my resident food critic said it didn't need a thing!

Thanks again, Cathy!

... and as last night's news anchor said, "Thank you for the privilege of your company."

Hugs, Myra

  1. That potato meal looks tasty.

It's so nice you have kept some items that bring back fond memories of your parents and grandparents. We too have some items which mean a lot.

Wishing you a wonderful time this Christmas and always.

    God bless.

  2. That is so sweet about the chair. I have one that belonged to my grandfather when he was a child. What treasures you have. Glad you had a nice evening out. Glad you tried Cathy's soup. I haven't tried it yet. Sweet post. I love all the memories.

  3. I love those "back in the day" items you have, Myra, especially the child's chair that takes a front row seat at Christmas. Glad the concert was great, too. I'm not a late-night person, so I know what you mean here.
    Blessings!

  4. Humble treasures are always the most precious ones - - the Christmas chair, your mother's book, the horse collar from your grandfather. I love things that evoke warm memories.

The potato recipe sounds wonderful. Unfortunately I'm all out of potatoes - until I can make the trip to town, which at this grim point may not be soon.....

BTW, I like the teddy bear.

  5. I know how you feel about older things that hold memory and how you would like to go back in time and see them use the items. I too feel that way. Love it.

  6. Oh I love the little chair and all the memories there. I'm so glad you enjoyed the show Thursday and your meal. I'm also pleased that your hubby loved the potato soup. We're supposed to get snow later this week and I made sure I have all the ingredients on hand so I can make some for then. Have a blessed day!

    1. Hahaha ... I'd better not tell you what Tom said when I told him you were getting snow. Unlike me, he's NO fan.

  8. Oh, I LOVE the chair...that is priceless, but then, so is the book that belonged to your mother, but then, those horse collars with jingle bells! Oh MY! Those are amazing treasures. I am so glad you have them and continue to enjoy them. I am sure your ancestors are happy you think of them at this time especially, with such fond and pleasant memories. Oh, your night out sounds like such fun! I haven't been out past 9 in ages, and probably don't want to be either. As a matter of fact...my bed is calling me to come soon.LOL. The potato soup recipe sounds wonderful. I may still have to try that. So much easier than peeling and dicing all those potatoes! Yeah, that sounds like a winner for dinner. LOL. Have a great time tomorrow. I'm going shopping in the morning and praying I can get it done once and for all. Merry Christmas.
