January is named for Janus, the two-faced god who looked into the past and future. Some believe he was Noah who may have been worshipped by his progeny. We certainly looked into the pre-flood world and the new world. The Anglo Saons called this month Wulfsmoanth. (There's a mouthful!)Let's talk about January:

On January 1, 1892 Ellis Island opened its doors. Did any of your relations enter the United States through Ellis Island? If not, do you know your family's history?
My paternal ancestors may have passed through Ellis Island from Germany ... but that's just a guess.
My mother, however, left a detailed summary dating back to her ancestor leaving Norway on April 28, 1858 on a sailboat, landing at Quebec, Canada on June 10, 1858. Later they traveled by train to Wisconsin, then Minnesota.
January's birthstone is garnet, and the flower is the carnation. Do you have favorite gemstones or flowers?
Sorry, gemstones don't hold much appeal ... maybe an emerald. My favorite 'hot house' flower is the lowly carnation. Silly perhaps, but I still smile at the presence of dandelions.
January 6 is Epiphany. Many take that day as the final day of the Christmas celebration and take down their decor. What about you?
Reluctantly, I take down the tree on Epiphany.
There is some evidence that January can set the tone for your entire year. What do you think of this? Do you make resolutions, etc.?
I don't get that at all.
For years and years, making new year resolutions was a Big Deal ... I even toiled over a Vision Board.
How burdensome!
I like to think every day's a blank page ... an invitation, if you will.

ReplyDeleteIn past years i aways took down decorations on NYear day because it ws the most boring day of the year and i was not working. Now I take it down when ever the sight of the Santas starts to get on my nerves.
I am trying for FUN with you and Sean this year. while singing What the world needs now, is fun, sweet fun... join me? if I were buying a gem it would be emerald. but I rather have a new iphone instead of a gem.
No idea how the family got here, no Ellis Island that i know of. I did immigrate from Savannah to Bradenton nearly 40 years ago if that counts
January finds us settled in the Wildwood area and enjoyed this read. My dad was born this month also so it is pretty special to me. LOL We do enjoy reading of your family, I wish we had more details (factual) of our ancestry.

ReplyDeleteWe too take the decorations down on 6 January. The Epiphany in our church is celebrated as when the three wise men visited Jesus.
I agree with you, every day is a new blank page for us to look forwards to in hope.

I am sure that I have relatives that went through Ellis Island. Sometimes I am so busy but wish I had time to do all that.

I do hope 2023 will be a good one.
I don't know if my relatives came through Ellis Island or not. The story goes 2 brothers left Germany and one of them was a stowaway. I have the name of the ship and it listed one of them as passenger in a book I found at the Dayton Library many years ago. I need to take time to get back into our family tree again. I like the having fun idea too and I'm so glad I found Sean of the South through you. He is extremely fun and often inspiring to read.

I never got into making resolutions either. I seem to not plan a head, but just live my life as it comes along. Not sure if thats good or bad.

ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! I don't think I've ever met a woman who didn't like a gemstone of some kind, ha ha. You truly are unique. I do like some gems but am not obsessed by them. I too don't make resolutions and have never created a vision board, the latter of which seem to be the 'thing' the last few years. I do pick a word for the year and sometimes I set some goals. I enjoyed reading all your answers. Enjoy the week!

ReplyDeleteI love carnations too and I found the best poem about dandelions...something about them having strong roots like our roots should be with the Lord. I will have to look for it. It made me see them so differently and my kids at school bring them to me all of the time. ♥ Loved your answers! Have a nice week. ♥

ReplyDeleteWith my trip to Florida, January certainly has started off wonderfully. I do hope it sets the tone for the whole year. I usually do put the decorations away on epiphany, but this year I won't be home for it. They will wait for me, I'm sure. I always resolve to do better than the year before. There's always room for some improvement. January is sometimes the coldest month in Ohio, but this year it would be hard to beat what we had in December. As for me I love Florida in January !
