... to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Our hostess Joyce asks the questions, and we gather to share answers -- sort of like a cyber coffee klatch!
What's something that makes you feel stressed? How do you cope?
'Not sure how it originated, but I've always had a pathological fear of being late. For instance. Any time we have to be at UAB, the 'what-iffer' in me starts to engage -- what if there's an accident on I-65, what if we don't leave in plenty of time and get caught in traffic, what if there's no wheelchair transport ....
How do I cope? Not well. I'm 'that' person standing by the front door, bag in hand well before it's necessary. Meanwhile, Tom's over there chilling and smoking his pipe like Cool Hand Luke.
What's a food you eat that evokes a memory? Explain.
My regular readers are probably weary of my mentions of Hatch Chile -- but gosh. It was such a cornerstone of my youth. One of my biggest regrets is mother not living long enough to enjoy the 'real' stuff I get delivered on dry ice. She loved living in Florida, but sure missed that particular delicacy. Quoting from an article in Bon Appetit: "It's sweet and smoky, it has a slight funk to it and a grassiness that makes it always taste like it's freshly picked. Like a jalapeno with more of a character arc."
This week's Hodgepodge lands on National Visit Your Relatives Day. Will you celebrate by visiting a relative? If so, is travel involved? Geographically, who is your nearest relative (not counting those living in your own house)?
My son, DIL and Grand #2 are a 45-minute drive away; they all work hard outside the home. So no, we've no plans to see each other today. Sadly, our family was very small; my cousins and I've little interest in one another's lives.
What's your most frequently used emoji? Do you make more phone calls, send more emails or mainly text to communicate with friends and family?
😘 💛🙏
Depending on the audience, it's a toss-up between e-mail, text or private messaging. I'll talk on the phone, but I'm not really fond of doing so.
Tell us a story behind a favorite piece of furniture.
After my father died in '81, mother shocked us all by having her sunroom enclosed and buying a nice table and chairs. Unfortunately, I've no pictures -- but that's where she spent the majority of her mornings and late nights, too. On random Fridays when I'd drive down to Port Charlotte after work, she and I'd sit there sipping wine, consuming bowlfuls of Cheez-Its. Of course, Caraleigh had her own chair. She never had much to say, but appeared to understand it all.
Today: These aren't my favorite cushions -- while in Arizona we kept it outside, where sun destroyed the originals.

Here's a close-up of the sole survivor on the rocker I've always kept inside.
Sometimes I sit and run my hands across the buttery resin like momma used to do.

"Hatch Chile"
ReplyDeleteWhat is that?
Here you go: https://www.hatch-green-chile.com/pages/what-are-hatch-chiles
DeleteI hate being late also!
ReplyDeleteGreat minds! (*grin*)
DeleteI would love to own any or all of your mothers chairs. we had swivel chairs but they were the bamboo kind not this wicker. her chair inside is beautiful. i have zero furniture that I don't want to toss of a fire if I could.
ReplyDeletei love the cyber coffee klatch! but lets change it to cyber cofee clatch! ha ha made me laugh because that is what i do every day, my first 3 cups of coffee are spent ON LINE... I have never loved any food that brings back memories UNLESS it is full of sugar. the one that pops is every time I see a banana pudding I flip back to the mid 50's in KY when we ate sunday dinners with the members of daddy congreation. there was no dinner that did not have a 'desert table' and the highlight to me was Nana Pudding. of course I ate some of every pie, cookie or cake or pudding they put out
Yes, I love alliteration, too. 'Clatch' it is! I've found the only way I can resist banana pudding is not to have any on hand!
DeleteChili Hatch is a new one for me. I agree on your final statement about having at least one "old" or vintage piece in each room. Besides soul it gives a room character. I also love my sunroom!
ReplyDeleteHatch seems to be catching on -- particularly in the SW. Unfortunately, there are also instances of product promoted as 'Hatch' that's fraudulent. It's always something!
DeleteI love your answers, especially reminiscing about the past fond memories.
ReplyDeleteTwo things stress me. Peeling and cutting onions. They say you should do it under water to avoid tears. But I keep coming up for air!
Also, getting there late. Whenever I need to go somewhere new I always travel there the day before to check how to get there. Then I travel again on the day in question. Once it took me all day to get to North Scotland for a meeting the day before it was due. When I got there, I drove back home through the night, and then started early the next morning to get to my meeting on time.
God bless.
Why, that would make me stressed as well! I love onions, but leave the cutting to Tom.
DeleteI feel you about the small family. I also have very little contact with my cousins and it's been this way since we were young.
ReplyDeleteI don't like being late either, but it's not my biggest source of stress.
Family's not always what it's cut out to be in Hallmark movies.
DeleteI can relate to not wanting to be late and the what if's. Wish I could help you with that. I'm glad you have something you love that much. It's like us and our Chicago pizza's. I'm always blowing that kiss and I do use the praying hands a lot too. That is a lovely pattern on the rocker. Your sun room looks inviting. That's a great random you shared today.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember your love for the Chicago pizza. Isn't it wonderful we can still get our hands on what we love?
DeleteUnfortunately, just about everything makes me stressed lately....... but what I really hate are any kind of appointments. Having to promptly be somewhere freaks me out.
ReplyDeleteThe foods that evoke fond memories are things that I had long ago but no longer exist - - like the fantastic meals that my maternal grandmother used to make.
I used to like talking on the phone, but now I dislike it. I prefer snail mail or email. Or occasional texting.
I suppose my favorite piece of furniture is the piano that my parents bought when I was ten years old. There are lots of stories connected with it (too many to mention here). Sadly, the piano is now completely ruined from mice and this perpetual Tennessee dampness....
I really like your sun room!
Thanks, Jon. My favorite means of communication is still e-mail, but I usually defer to others' preferences. I'm just happy they want to keep in touch.
DeleteNow I understand Caraleigh, we are a lot alike. I have my own chair and act like I understand what is said.!..... ;-) my fav emoji! LOL
ReplyDeleteWe enjoy getting to know you mor and more. One day I want to try Hatch Chile.
Unusual, we did have a visitor today JJ came over. Also Mark traveled to NC to visit his family. ;-)
I hope you do get to try some Hatch. Just please stay AWAY from that sold in the cans -- I refer to as 'swill.'
DeleteMMMM I liked how you did the steaming coffee cup!
ReplyDeleteI actually found that on giphy.com, Jack. They've got some neat stuff!
DeleteOur rooms here have no problems with old things giving them soul. And not just things, we old humans too. 😊
ReplyDeleteI hear that!
DeleteYes, Hatch chili is good. I'm right at that door with you tapping my feet. WE have an old piece everywhere we look. I guess we have Soul! Happy Hodgepodge to you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to have pieces that remind me of loved ones, simpler times.
DeleteI don't like being late...or even right on time..I like to be anywhere a few minutes before I'm supposed to be there. I've never had Hatch Chile. I will have to look it up. Those chairs are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYa, I can't tell you how often I've sat out in my car thumbing through FB, etc. until it's socially acceptable to go inside.
DeleteBeing late is not an option for me either! I am usually the first person to arrive. Hatch Chili sounds yummy. Great story about the furniture. Hugs! xo
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI love Hatch chilies, but the only way I can get them here is canned, and it is just not the same.
ReplyDeleteI agree! Tho' I see Trader Joe's has Hatch seasoning flakes; I want to check out next time we're in B'ham.
DeleteYou can't beat a Hatch's chili :) I do like your sunroom. I'm with you about not wanting to be late. I also wonder about the "what ifs" especially driving into work. Don't want to be late for that :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Have to admit, I don't miss Phoenix traffic. You don't have to navigate any freeways, do you?
DeleteI have that fear of being late, too, Myra. I'm not quite as obsessed with it as I was when I was younger, but I still try my best to be on time.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Don't you wish everyone would?
DeleteThere is not much that stresses me out these days and I just try to be flexible and go with the flow, Although I'm rarely late, I make an effort to be early.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was the only person that I knew that made pan fired oysters. That is one food I'll never forget. She was a good cook.
My favorite emjoji is the I love you one and I use it often. I'm texting more these days as it seems to be my children's favorite form of communication. I don't like it much, but do it for them.
Love,
ma
I've never heard of pan-fried oysters! Yes, we accommodate those we love and appreciate that they even want to communicate!
DeleteLOVE LOVE the cyber coffee clatch..
