That's a mixed bag!
Most are precious. Of course, there have been dark times -- but like the lyric from a favorite song goes, "It's the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were."

I try to hang on to the good memories to get me through the bad times. Those wonderful memories always brighten my days. I have lots of them, and yes music and songs from the past do bring up those memories fresh in my mind. There are so many I couldn't name just one. And the best thing about memories is that we can always make new ones. Watching my grandchildren play yesterday reminded me of when mine were small. Time is a precious thing and goes by way too fast. It's a beautiful summer like day here today, I'll try to remember this when winter comes again. Love two you and hope you have a great week. Love, ma

DeleteI think it is good to remember all memories even the painful ones. Maybe we stay there a little less time than the happy ones but those hard/sad/painful times helped shape us to be who we are today. And it is even okay to shed a tear or two with those old memories :) I'll have to look up some of the songs you mentioned here as I am not familiar with them. We have visited several Civil War battlefields, the last being Gettysburg a few years back. It is sobering to be there walking "sacred fields" almost. A good time for reflection and a hope we won't be there again!

DeleteLooking at the prompt I remember mothers Brownie camera which is the only one she ever had and daddy's pocket watch, he carried it even if he wore a wrist watch. as for civil was visits. I have visited every fort, musuem, civil war site that i have ever been in a city that had them . Savannah has 3 major forts, and numerous cemeteries, museums and I visited every one of them many times. dragging my kids and my mother with me for outings or with a friend/freinds each time someone came to visit Savannah. my parents are buried just out side the gates of the most famous Cemetery and my aunt and grandmother in side the gates. DeleteI had a student a couple of years ago that loved Sweet Caroline and it brings me memories of him. I love that. It seems that songs brings happy memories to a lot of people.

I get pride and sorrow when I visit Revolutionary and Civil War sites. Gettysburg hurts to the core, walking riding, reading and yes hearing.........

Thanks, Jack! A glimpse behind Volare! -- My girlfriend and I once took a cruise aboard an Italian liner. I forget which island, but everyone had enjoyed a bit too much rum punch. Going back to the ship, the priest stood up at the front of the tender and led everyone in singing Volare! at the top of our lungs. Sure, we got a few disapproving looks-- but ever since then PJ and I will begin a Christmas/birthday greeting with, "Volare!"
DeleteThe Confederate Memorial near your home is serene and thought-provoking. When I was in the Missouri Ozarks I lived only a mile away from Wilson's Creek, a Civil War battlefield. It was a haunting and intriguing place to visit.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't exist without my memories. Some were horrendous - but the good ones are treasures that sustain me.
"Sweet Caroline" was a big hit the summer of '69 (am I that old?? Hell no...) There are so many songs that bring back fond memories - - too many to list.
The Summer of '69, yes! That was the first time I saw Neil Diamond in concert. In a generous (totally out of character) act, my first husband went and sold blood to afford to buy us tickets.

ReplyDeleteSo many songs evoke good, (or sometimes bad), memories. Yet they linger on in our consciousness and awake the past when we hear them again.
Perhaps we should have a Blog post of the five songs we like most and why.

DeleteOh, "The Way We were"...kind of a bittersweet song..."Volare"...I remember that one...and Sweet Caroline...your former husband sold blood to get tickets for the concert? Wow, now that's devotion! LOL. I always enjoy your responses. Never know what we'll get, but it's always good! Thank you.

DeleteI find memories comforting. I flip through photo albums regularly and sit and think about dear friends I haven't seen in a while. Then I send cards or texts... I've lost my dad and my oldest sister in the last 3 years. We just returned from San Diego and my sister's memorial, but I haven't set up a memorial in my home. In 2004 we drove from Massachusetts to Florida, visiting sites along the way. We got to see Valley Forge and Antietam, among others.
