My mother made the best:
What machine or appliance in your home aggravates you the most? Why?
Our 'energy-efficient' washing machine and dryer. (Now I know why manufacturers try strong-arming folks into buying additional extended warranties.) For instance? Every now and then during the spin cycle, the washer makes a loud grinding noise like someone's operating a jack hammer in the kitchen. Her name's Karen.
What are 3 things that brighten up your day when they happen?
Waking up and realizing nothing aches.

Thursday (May 12) is National Limerick Day. Write a limerick about relating to spring weather, spring blooms or a spring event (Five lines, the first two lines rhyme with the fifth line, the third and fourth lines rhyme together.)
Allergies, anyone? Okay --
There once was a big-shot called Bart
Who thought he was so very smart.
Come Spring, to 'Bama he ran
Quite forgetting Allegra in hand,
We just smiled and said, "Well, bless his heart."

My thoughts and prayers are with friends and former classmates in my little hometown, Los Alamos. Once again, the community's threatened by wildfire. While no evacuation orders have been issued, yesterday officials amended their warning systems: 'READY' has become 'SET.' Praying that winds won't prompt a 'GO' order, but I'm impressed by the level of communications and firefighters' resolve. This isn't their first rodeo.

22 years ago today (May 10) a monster named Cerro Grande roared into town, coming dangerously close to the National Lab and decimating hundreds of homes. Adding insult to injury, it began as a controlled burn.
Not sure if you can make out the homemade sign:
"For Sale! Fixer-upper ... Handyman's dream ... Moving, everything must go ... Spacious floor plan ...Unobstructed views ... Furniture negotiable ... red hot deals! ... For viewing contact FEMA ... Remodeling done by National Park Service."
Mother's and my last vacation together was memorable in more ways than one!

My prayers are with the people in the path of the firestorm. I get updates from Jean on cheerful monk each day. fire is the most devastating and scary of natures storms to me. its hard to breathe looking at this old photo. great job on the limerick. I am still giggling over the Bless your heart. it has so many meanings and depends how we mean it.

DeleteI'm laughing at your Karen! You've lived here long enough to know that we get tornadoes and even hurricanes move up through the state. We get flooding. Just seeing those fire pictures makes me gasp. No pun intended.

DeleteI never get tired of the smiles, hugs and kisses from my grandchildren. They really brighten my day. I am praying for all those affected by the fires. It's terrible to see how big those fires are and homes and forest burned away, I don't write limericks, but they can be funny and cause us to smile too. Hope all is going well with you. ReplyDeleteThe one appliance that I find annoying at home is the telephone. It always rings when I'm busy. The answering machine message now says, "He is ignoring you as usual!" So people keep repeating, "Pick up ... don't ignore me ... pick up!"

DeletePoor New Mexico! It is getting hit so much with fires so early in the season! I love your limerick! Isn't that a nice feeling to wake up in the morning and realize nothing aches? Haven't had a day like that in a while but it is a good start to the day!

DeleteWell, 'Bless your Heart!' for reminding me my mama made a great 'custard pie' also. YES those fires are terrible, and worse when started by a 'controlled burn.' I had never heard of a controlled burn until we moved to Florida. I know they have always existed, I had never heard of them though.

Reading, learning, listening to music, eating my favorite foods, writing, etc.
My mother made the best:
homemade soup, stuffed cabbage, chicken paprika......she was a great cook but ironically disliked cooking.
Appliance that annoys me:
The ancient refrigerator left by the previous owners.
Three things (TWO things) that brighten my day:
Seeing the sunshine and realizing that I'm still alive.

DeleteOh my, that firestorm...how terrible for people in its path. I just can't even imagine how awful that would be. Praying for those in its path and wake. I enjoyed your limerick. You are talented. I couldn't even begin to put it together. I enjoyed your responses to the things you never get tired of. Appliances...don't get me started. Right now (knock on wood) ours are all fine. They are no longer made to last like they used to be. I prefer the old time appliances w/o so many computerized doodads to go wrong, go wrong,go wrong. So good night my friend.

ReplyDeleteThe fires out west are extremely concerning, especially since water is scarce. Maybe, these folks should employ controlled burns on a regular basis in the name of true conservation? Oh, well, bless their hearts!
