Good morning!
Borrowing from a years-old post:
"Last week I went looking for something in a bankers box, sealed since October 2001. One box. Then, things snow-balled. On the bright side, we've enough bubble wrap to last the rest of our natural lives."
(Obviously, that was written before our cross-country move!)
If you're a fan of estate sales, no doubt you've seen tables-full of crystal-cut glassware ... largely ignored. Even my parents had little use -- or space -- for their wedding presents.
All these years, good old Homemade Guilt's kept me from discarding mother's collection. (I'll let my son worry about that after I'm gone ... lol!) I don't have a 'style', but sadly it isn't cut-glass.
What to do? Well, each morning I've begun to use the water glasses that used to reside on my parents dining room table:

Dollar Store 'junior' toothpaste = perfect fit!
Yes, Tom carefully drilled holes in the 'dough' bowl.
For now, the large bowls remain cloistered.
... but the sherbet set still bugs me.

It's nice that you have put it to good use! I finally donated most of my mother's pieces (there were hundreds!). I kept a few things and that's enough for me. Thanks for linking up Myra and thanks for the prayers for my Missy.

DeleteOH MY! my mother would have died to have that last set of dishes. she had a creamer/sugar dish just like that and loved it all her life... the only thing you showed today that i would want for my nook is that vase with the green. it is gorgeous. but then it has to be dusted and cleand. i have never been a dish collector but my mother was.. when she died I gave some of her things to her sister and some to my sons wife, even though they were divorced. there was a set of pink glasses that mother loved and never one time used, simialr to the tumbler you are using at breakfast but pink. his wife loved them so i gave them to my grandsons to give to her for mothers day.

DeleteIf you go into just about any thrift store you'll see aisles of china and crystal that people have donated.

DeleteGood idea to re-purpose things. I re-purposed an old vase the mother-in-law gave us as a wedding present into a jigsaw puzzle. It just slipped whilst I was cleaning it. My wide said I did it on purpose.

DeleteWE were in Cuba we bought some German china and some super Crystal. For a long time it was in a china cabinet for show. On the move my girl said we are taking the good china south, use it and leave it. No one wants that stuff anymore, we say.

DeleteWe had a lot of crystal to get rid of that belong to hubby's parents. We did sell quite a bit but really at a "steal" of a price. I like what you did to repurpose some of your pieces! Not sure about what to do with the serbert dishes. We have a set of brandy glasses that hubby's dad brought back from some place in Europe (?Italy) when he was in the service. They are all packed away in a box. If hubby goes before me, I'll deal with what to do with them. In the meantime they aren't taking up too much space. We went to an estate sale the other day and sure enough lots of crystal there. Funny how things change over the years!

DeleteI was lucky, my sister wanted all of my mother's cut glass. It was nice, but we don't have space for things like that.

Lucky, yes! How well I remember our apartment's small closets and lack of storage space.
DeleteMaybe you could gift your children with only a couple of the sherbet dishes each...enough for a nice little fruit cup for them...how many do you have, and how many children? If you divide them up between them they won't take up too much space and they might enjoy having just a couple of pieces as opposed to the whole set. I have just one piece of my mother's crystal...a dessert goblet, and I enjoy seeing it in my curio cabinet. Sometimes I bring it out and use it for something pretty...some fruit, cranberry sauce, or just to enjoy once in a while. But again...divide and conquer! That might be the best way to see it used again.
ReplyDeleteI've only one son and two grown granddaughters -- but yours is a great suggestion. Perhaps I could wrap them gaily, each 'holding' what the girls REALLY want (ie, gift certificate).

DeleteBeautiful. I, too, have trouble parting with things that belonged to loved ones. I try to find other uses or to use them as intended, but many just sit in the china cupboard to look at.

DeleteYep! Not sure what prompted all this; but just last night I used one of the prettier crystal bowls for my jello-and-cottage-cheese.
DeleteGlad to see you using all that wonderful crystal. It's so nice, it'd be a shame to leave it packed away. I'm thinking some of it that you can't find a use for would make wonderful gifts. It's like passing along your family history. I donated a lot of what I couldn't use when I moved, there was no use or room for storage here. Someon's trash is always another's treasure.

DeleteI am late getting around! So sorry! I have some glass pieces that never see the light of day and need to do something with them too. Either sell them or start using them! Such a shame. Brides... don't put crystal and china and silver on your gift lists! You will never use them!!

DeleteOh those lovely sherbet glasses. Sigh..... I love all crystal as I did Princess HOuse for years and have many beautiful hand blown and lead pieces. I sold many years ago and am so sorry. Most everything was USA Made (hand blown) and France too. No more. I love it. A gal I worked with said her mom had so much PH she bought a storage shed for their yard. I guess watching people create something was meaningful to me unlike the Made in China junk today. We use our sherbet glasses for ice cream and such. The grands think it is heavenly! HUGS across the miles XO XO (I forgot to link in to TBT. I will try to be better this week.)
