Did you know? (I didn't!)
Each July 4 at noon, a "Salute to the Union" is fired by any capable military base. This is a salute of one gun for every state in the United States."
For more history and/or factoids, check out Terri's blog or go to the National Day Calendar.
Hurray for the Red, White & Blue!

Please share a favorite July 4 memory with us:
Back in '05 we took a road trip (here) to visit my son and family. That evening we all enjoyed hanging at Montgomery's Riverfront for some of the best live music and fireworks we've heard/seen.
There's something about a girl and her sparkler!
Apologies if this sounds UNpatriotic, but at the time I thought it was so funny.
As songs grew more recognizable, explosions more vivid, we knew the evening was coming to a close. "God Bless America" segued into "America the Beautiful." When "Oh say, can you see... " began we stood and began gathering blankets, water bottles.
Not so fast!
How do I put this?
Only in Alabama.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" trumped the "National Anthem.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" trumped the "National Anthem.
How do you plan to spend tomorrow? If you are working, will you celebrate later?
I've no idea!
Son is working, our friends are under the weather ... and frankly, we're I'm feeling too darn old to sit outside like mosquito bait and sweat.
Hopefully, PBS will feature something like a 'Capitol Fourth.'
Is there a favorite food always reserved for your 4th of July celebrations?
Nope.
Tom will probably enjoy watermelon. (I should … but don't.)
In Florida, you can buy all kinds of fireworks, including some that fly high and burst into pretty cascades. Are fireworks legal in your state/community, and does anyone you know put on a display for your neighborhood?
I hope not! Like blog-pal Anne, I'm gonna pray for rain.
Not naming names, but I know of two instances where irresponsible dog owners sacrificed their animals' lives by leaving them outside … and terrified.
Honestly? I've never understood the appeal of things that go 'boom' in the night. Give me a box of sparklers and I'm a happy camper.
Do you have a favorite movie that you always watch sometime during the 4th of July?
That sounds like a neat tradition. What do you suggest?
Share something from your week, please.
Scads of thanks to everyone for your prayers for Tom! (I felt them!)
I don't know if it was stress or what … but he felt increasingly worse over the weekend. Monday morning his skin was just ... gray and his breathing sounded like a rock mixer. Because he had difficulty standing and maintaining equilibrium, I put my foot down (pulled the b**** card) and drove him to the ER.
Although we'd not yet heard back on the test results, the doc was able to go on-line and ascertain there were no suspicious lab findings, no blockages, etc. Pushed fluids and discovered an inner-ear 'uh-oh' … but feel there's no immediate cause for alarm. Just to be safe, Tom has to see both a cardiologist and a pulmonologist next month. SO relieved!
On a lighter note!
One of the ladies in my Bible study shared this pix of her granddaughter, taken during the National Anthem at a recent ball game.
2 y/o Kennedy 'gets' it!

I hope everyone enjoys a SAFE and happy Independence Day! Let's chat again soon!
Big hugs, Myra

enjoyed the visit, but I cannot believe you do not like fireworks displays!!!!! to be truthful I have seen enough myownself! One of the best displays I remember was in GITMO from a barge in the middle of the Bay. with the reflections 360degrees.
ReplyDeleteBUT MOST of all I love a kid like Kennedy (We have a ggranddaughter Kennedy. I would hope she 'gets it' like that little lady.
We have nothing special at the 4th, except we both LOVE AND HONOR the RED WHITE AND BLUE.
We will enjoy this one on the road, IN LOVE!
Enjoy your 4th with Tom./
Sherry & jack
PS: Good call and a great wife, taking care of the big guy!
Well, I don't DISLIKE them so much as the enormous amount of $$$ spent for such a brief thrill.
DeleteI'd forgotten y'all have a Kennedy, too. Love that name!
Scary about Tom but glad you insisted he get checked out! Glad nothing so far has shown up, but wise to get him checked out "head to toe" by the specialists!
ReplyDeleteI love fireworks, but haven't seen them in a long time in person. We stopped going when we had a certain corgi and he flinched being at home alone and was so scared of the big sounds. His last 4th I spent it in the bathroom with the fan on and him lying right by me with the door closed to try to drown out the sounds of the display being put on less than a mile from the house we were living in at the time. Now its just too hot to want to get out and see it. I saw on AOL that you could stream fireworks from Disney World; we just might do that.
So sweet with the little one being patriotic. Someone is teaching her right. I "swear" I'm never buying another Nike shoe but that's another post for another day.
I like to watch Independence Day with Will Smith on the 4th. Its silly but it is a kind of good feeling movie at least at the end.
Happy 4th to you and Tom!
Thanks for the recommendation, Betty! I'm right there with you on Nike; and from what I can tell on social media, so is a BIG chunk of our population.
DeleteThey always have a big day up at the lake a few miles from me, when I was younger I would go see the fire works they had after dark but haven't been in years. It's close enough you can see them if they shoot them high. Just don't interest me anymore. Hope Tom feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! My interest has waned considerably, too.
DeleteBTW, Jean … I'd love to 'visit' you, but your blog is marked private. Just didn't want you thinking I was being rude. :)
All right - hold everything!
ReplyDeleteWhaddaya mean, you don't enjoy watermelon??
Are you unpatriotic or something???
Actually, watermelon is messy and a lot of trouble but I still like it. I must confess: I'm going to have cantaloupe this 4th of July.
The older I get, the more I HATE fireworks. The fire/accident danger is potent and I think they should be banned.
I don't have to worry too much about them out here in the wilderness, but I'll still be among those praying for rain.
I wholeheartedly agree about not wanting to sit outside and be mosquito bait.
I'll be inside - watching the big Washington D.C. patriotic celebration hosted by our President.
That is - if any of the liberal TV channels dare to show it.
Perhaps FOX will (???)
Have a happy 4th, Myra!
Uh, ya. Actually, I don't care for most varieties of fruit. When you lived in West Texas were those who'd take a firearm out on July 4 and shoot at the sky. THAT was a big deal in Phoenix; and something they're looking out for here in Alabama. Stupid.
DeleteYes, in West Texas they not only fired their guns on the 4th of July - they also did it on New Year's Eve.
DeletePraying for your husband and for yourself. Continue to trust in God.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and yours a Happy 4th July.
God bless you all.
Please, keep them coming. Thank you so much!
DeleteLove that photo of your granddaughter! And I have to admit when it comes to actually enjoying a song...I'm with the "Sweet Home Alabama" crowd. That's one of my favorite songs.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy 4th and prayers continue for Tom until he's seen the other docs and gotten an all-clear!
Thanks, Stacey! Actually, the first photo is my grand. The sweet baby belongs to one of my B'study ladies. Actually, her entire family attends. While 34 weeks pregnant Kennedy's mom suffered an aortic aneurysm and they both nearly died. Kennedy is sort of everyone's church baby.
DeleteSo relieved you followed your instincts when it came to Tom, Mevely, and will continue to pray for him and for you!
ReplyDeleteIt will be a quiet fourth at our house. Used to love to go to fireworks, but now I don't mind missing it; we hear plenty at our house, that's for sure. Happy Independence Day!
Thank you so much, Martha. Quiet is GOOD!
DeleteI like fireworks, but yeah, my poor Duchess will be spending most of the evening hiding under the bed.
ReplyDeleteComforting hugs to Duchess!
DeleteKennedy is absolutely beautiful, and that expression is priceless.. i despite fireworks and when i saw the weather predicton for rain on the evening of the 4th was very happy. the problem in our neighborhood is there are many who pop them off and on all day, not just at night. i hate the sound and so do our dogs. in GA it was against the law, in FL i guess not.. we have no plans except to get a burger at Culvers, assuming they are open, but that is what we do every other thursday at noon. we are a couple without traditions..
ReplyDeleteabout Tom and his ER, i am so glad he is ok, that brought back a memory from our first year of marriage. bob had not been to a doctor since he was 16 and he was 48 at the time. one night he went to the bathroom and i heard a crash and found him flat on his face on living room floor. I forced him to a doctor the next day and it was an inner ear infection... hope Tom has something like that and nothing wore than that...
Oh my word … that had to be a terrifying sight. Isn't Kennedy the cutest? Someone was saying they need to share that picture with the Biscuits (baseball) organization.
DeleteI so hate the ones who don't care for how their animals are sensitive to this! My poor Lici is terrified, so we usually just stay home, or go over to our inlaws so its quieter for her. I so love that sweet pic of Kennedy! Have a great 4th!
ReplyDeleteMe, too! Love your tender heart, Jodi!
DeleteThat last pic is so darling! I never heard of the tradition of the shots at the bases. That is cool! You know, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do when it comes to taking care of these men of ours! Hard heads sometimes. I will be holding Annie in my lap tomorrow night and I do think rain is in our forecast, so who knows! There will be some people shooting them off illegally, which is so annoying!
ReplyDeleteHard heads … you bet! I think if people are going to adopt an animal they need to promise to to comfort and protect.
DeleteMy dogs are so scared of fireworks. I have to be strategic on when I get them out to pee and it has to be quick, especially on the 4th because the booms go on all day. UGH! Loved your answers! Have a Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeletehttps://lorisbusylife.blogspot.com/
And rain! And snow! Wish someone could invent a (sanitary) indoor doggy potty.
DeleteSo glad Tom is doing better. Please keep us posted as he sees the specialists and his recovery progresses. That photo of Kennedy is precious! The loud firecrackers and fireworks always get to be too much and I feel bad for the dogs. Check out Independence Day for a movie to watch! Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. Lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteI will … thank you! We had to make another trip to the VA this morning (*sigh*). They're pretty sure it's an inner ear infection, but have ordered an echocardiogram as well.
DeleteGlad Tom is doing better too.
ReplyDeleteI am with you on the 4th.
I am afraid the firecrackers will hit my house and they will surely make Disco scared to death.
sandie
I didn't even think of firecrackers hitting your house. Do y'all hose down the roof and sides to prevent fire?
DeleteI'm glad you get your hubby to go to the ER. Not an easy task, I'm sure. Here's hoping he passes all of those medical tests with flying colors.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of fireworks in my life, and I absolutely loved them when I was young. Now? Not so much. It's too darned hot and buggy out there, waaaay too crowded, and the noise, smell and smoke don't exactly float my boat, either. But my hubby loves all of it... so we'll go. I'm perfectly happy watching them on TV. :)
If all goes well, we'll get some live blue crabs and steam them tomorrow. That's our kinda 4th of July fare.
Have a bang-up day!
Oooh, I like the way you serve up a holiday meal! Thanks so much for the well-wishes. Fingers crossed!
DeletePictures of kids with sparklers are the best :) Hope you have a peaceful 4th!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! It was a LAZY one.
DeleteLOOK at that cute little Kennedy!!! She does get it! I love Sweet Home Alabama! That is almost an anthem of its own.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed 4th. xo Diana
You're right … it is! Thanks so much for visiting!
Deleteglad your hubby is doing better. have a happy 4th.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteMy first comment must be about that precious little Kennedy who does get it! Oh that more, especially public figures got it like this little one. The "Ungrateful Americans!" Enough of that! I don't mind the fireworks as long as they end at the time written into our HOA ordinances. Thursday night someone behind us decided to unload all their leftover crackers at 11PM. One more pop and I would have been in their yard in my pj's.
ReplyDeleteWe're on the same page about those Ungrateful Americans. Praying (that) our thoughts are echoed by the majority.
DeleteWe saw some of the fireworks from the two cities around us. The Rockies were out of town so no fireworks downtown. I still love sparklers and had them last at Jeremy's wedding when they left the reception, we lined the road with them. Good call on Tom! We have to take care of our men. I know mine takes good care of me. Visit my friend Barb sometime. She is trying to restart her blog Dogmom Diva at blogspot.com She is busy with her hubby Carl, Parkinson's and he had a stroke a while back. She needs a break from the daily routines. Love the photo of Kennedy. It is the reason we are free. To honor our great nation regardless of who does not agree. Anywhere you go, people love their land for the most part. The rest are all trying to come here. Do it legally and I am fine with it. Colorado had 39 people become legal citizens in June 2019. A lady was dancing she was so overjoyed and so was a man from Mexico and an Italian too. I LOVE seeing it! We have to pray my friend. We cannot let socialism come into our nation. I would love to see Trump win four more years than how about his own daughter and Candace Owens? Boy oh Boy those fibbers and hypocrites in DC would die of shock! sorry I will never join the liberal agenda. I was raised to be kind to everyone. Don't have to love you just treat you with respect unless you show me otherwise. My dad taught me that.SO I hate being sucked into their lies that if I do not think the way they say I should I hate them. U G H Again "Remember Attica". I think people who work or worked hard are going to have enough. Pay your fair share like the rest of us and what you do behind closed doors is not for public viewing. Get some humility and respect for others. Now I must step down from my soapbox for another time. Loving America disliking all the ungratefuls.
