1) In 2016, a group recommended that his week's song replace "The Star Spangled Banner" as our national anthem. They maintain it's just as beautiful but easier to sing. How do you feel about this?
Um … about the same way I feel about velcro v. shoelaces ... digital clocks v. analog ... printing v. cursive. When are we going to quit enabling those who want to take the easy way out. Suck it up, buttercup!
2) Katharine L. Bates said her lyrics were inspired by a trip to Pike's Peak. What's the most beautiful American spot you've ever visited?

3) The music was written by organist Samuel Augustus Ward. Both Bates and Ward were very formal when signing their names professionally -- she including her middle initial and he with his full middle name. How about you? When you sign checks or documents, do you use your middle name or initial?
Yes, both. For legal purposes I also began using my 'prior' last name. Two, two-syllable words spoken aloud (Myra Guca) sounds awfully … guttural.
4) In 1945, when this version of the song was recorded, America lost Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Frank Sinatra said, "I lost a hero." What late, great American hero from our past would you like to honor today?
This was the first thing that popped in my mind.
5) Also in 1945, a 19-year-old 'hoofer' waited outside the Los Angeles radio station where Sinatra was bring interviewed. That was the beginning of the friendship between Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra. Tell us about your oldest friend.

Thanks to Classmates.com Kathy and I reconnected in 2005. Her phenomenal memory has ignited so many silly memories! Our once 'BF' status has paled … but I treasure her all the same!
6) The Fourth of July means we're in the middle of summer. Are you careful about applying sunscreen?
Not especially. But neither do I enjoy spending time outdoors.
7) Mosquito bites can be a major summer annoyance. Are you scratching any itches right now?
Not right this minute. I've discovered applying a thin coat of liquid SoftSoap quells the urge to rip my skin open.
8) Emergency rooms report an increase in wrist injuries in summer, with people falling off bikes and skateboards and jamming their wrists catching hard-hit softballs. Have you been to the ER or Urgent Care during 2019?
Um … ya. Both last Monday (ER) and Wednesday (walk-in).
Although he's prone to sleeping most of the time, Tom's feeling some better.
9) New York is home to Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest every year on the 4th. Will hot dogs be consumed in your household this weekend?
This sounds unAmerican, but I really don't care for hot dogs. Conecuh Sausage is a whole 'nother story … it's a staple in our refrigerator!

ReplyDeleteI smiled all the way though this post. I have never heard of Bates or Ward and have never looked at any song to see who wrote it. Bob sings Sinatra songs all the time just to irritate me because I don't care for him.. I have no American Hero and if I have to choose it would be Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh of Leathal Weapon movies.

No ER this year, been about 2 years since one with Bob. about 5 years for one for me, seems I fogot to take my bp meds for 3 days... oops
my friend swears the softner sheets for the dryer keeps skeeters off her. she wears one in her pocket or tucked in her socks.

ReplyDeleteI like the "Star Spangled Banner" specifically because it's so difficult to sing. It's fun to watch singers struggle their way through it.
I don't really have any heroes - - but my Mom and I met Ronald Reagan when I was 14. It was a chance encounter but we were alone with him for quite a long time and had a nice conversation. (this was long before he was president).
I blogged about this incident once long ago, and might do it again sometime.
I've never used sunscreen and I'm usually very tan. This vanity is the result of being raised in Southern California.
There are LOTS of mosquitoes, flies, and wasps this year and I am covered with bites.
Love hot dogs. HATE hot dog-eating contests.

Change the Anthem because it's too hard? No professionalism there.
I'll pass the liquid soap help to family in the midwest. Where we live, only places with moisture have the biting unnecessary insects.
My 13 yr. old g-daughter says her friends can't read her cursive. I made a point of teaching cursive until I retired.
Kids also can't read an analog clock and use a dial, push button phone.
So glad to realize I'm not the only one who loathes summer!
