Scattered Saturday thoughts

G'morning, friends,

There's weeds out back that refuse to die -- but I can't think of a better way to procrastinate than visit with some of my favorite humans!

I don't know what's gotten into Mother Nature, but we've gone from March into (feels like) June.  I finally broke down a couple days ago and turned on the air conditioning.  How about you?

Speaking of breaking down ...

I finally cried "Uncle!" and ordered a new phone from Amazon -- not the latest and greatest model, but still new with all the bells and whistles suitable for this individual of generous years.   Is it just me, or are today's customer service techs just a teensy condescending?   I visited the Verizon, asking if they'd perform a transplant from my old Pixel.  Not only is that no longer a courtesy, when he saw the model the Gen-Z'er almost smirked.  "You downgraded, didn't you?"   Not only was I at a loss for words, I paid $30 for the privilege.

Now, would you believe, not 24 hours later Tom's phone went belly up.  It's on Hospice as we speak, but I got on Amazon and ordered him another like mine that's supposed to be delivered today.  Ooooh, I can hardly wait to see if C's working the service desk when we waltz in with our second less-than Elite 2025 model. Just praying he doesn't put on an attitude, ya know?   It's so discouraging to be on the side of needing v. wanting.

What else?  I've been really

..... enjoying Tess Gerritsen's new book "The Summer Guests" -- a follow-up to "Spy Coast."  If anyone's drawn to well-crafted suspense, check out this group of retired intelligence agents (aka, spooks) who enjoy good martinis and hunting for answers.

..... laughing hysterically at a (new-to-me) comedian on Prime.  Have you seen any of James Gregory's stand-ups?   The one we watched, "Food is not Fatal" had us running to the bathroom.  (TMI?)  I don't know if it's his Southern accent, references to Golden Corral, climate change -- even fear of flying -- but it's darn refreshing to hear a clean delivery that's really funny.

Not funny, but ...

Yesterday we attended the funeral of a dear lady from church.  Again, I was drawn to so many sweet, familiar faces ... to the unpolished-yet-heartfelt words from Peggy's family and friends.  Pastor Janet remarked, "Looking at your faces, I've no doubt you're leaving fingerprints on each other's lives."  Gosh, y'all.  That got me.

Wouldn't that be a super legacy?

Okay, I'd better shut this up and get outside with my whacker.   Chat soon!

Hugs, Myra

  1. what kind of whacker? is it light weight? we have none and the weeds are winning and I can't use our old one even if it would run... way to heavy.
    blade or string?
I have never bought anything but cheap smartphones and they work as good and better than some.. they all take fantastic pictures and do the same thing, expensive is not necessary. people never cease to amaze me.
our AC has been on for 2 weeks, and the past 5 days we have had July weather, with high 90's feels like 100 plus.. the last 4 days for those temps. and no sign or rain, but today is the first day in about 6 weeks that the sky is not solid blue but full of fluffy gorgeous Florida clouds..... coming soon to a blog near you

    1. Here's a link to my 'whacker.' At first Tom thought it would be a toy, but had to admit it does the job!

  2. Happy Whacking !! NOT...
I'm trying to avoid going out and doing the same thing.
I hear you on the phone thing. I'm so untechie that it is all mind boggling to me. Somehow Dave and I muddle through on our iphone mini. It seems to do what we need it for. I am very happy with the photo quality and the apps for doing some "photoshop-like" corrections. The learning curve gets bigger and bigger the more generational divide there is. Thank heavens for our son who often comes to our rescue.
So sorry for the loss of your church friend. That quote from your pastor is spot on..I love the thought of the fingerprints we leave on others lives. You definitely have left some on mine.

  3. We jumped from spring into summer as well. But, it will turn cooler in a couple days. And, the pollen... don't get me started about how bad that is!!

  4. Winter left so quickly that spring was pummeled and summer has arrived. Today in TN it's 85 - - which is unusual for here. It's also very windy. Reminds me of Texas.
It's much better to buy a new phone, instead of trying to revive an old one.
Don't mention weeds. I don't know what my place will look like.....
    if I ever return...

    1. I wonder if your county allows a controlled burn? That would save you or anyone else unnecessary -- and dangerous -- physical exertion.

  5. Girl, I live in Florida where we have had the ac on since like Dec. LOL--Actually, I think we turned it off a like a handful of times and the heat was like a handful of times, but...this is Florida, sigh. ANYWAYS, I finally broke down an ordered a new phone too, a few months ago...at least the "cloud" kept my sons' photos. I am figuring out how to record or save his voice messages. But you know, I am older than dirt, lol. Wishing you a lovely day my friend.

Okay, we've but 4 minutes 'til Final 4. Thinking of you and Dave ... but cheering for Auburn.

  6. No air conditioning on by us yet. Sorry about the phone issues. Can't believe Tom's went down too! I do not like change. Glad you are enjoying your book. I guess I should check out that comedian. Sorry to hear about the loss of a church member. Sounds like it was a sweet service for her.

  7. I agree with you that some youngsters serving in techie shops can be condescending when talking about techie gizmos and things.

The other day I was sitting in the garden with a large drink reading a book on my electronic tablet.

The techie guy at the shop talked to me as if I was a little child. "You should not have hit that wasp with your tablet," he said, "It is not like a newspaper or magazine!"

I mean ... why can't they make those things more sturdy and unbreakable? Luckily it was still under guarantee and I told him it was his fault for not having a warning saying "DO NOT SWAT FLIES WITH THIS!"

    God bless, Mevely.

  8. The weeds are always the most persistent plants out there! Coincidentally, Danny just order me a new phone today as I've been needing a better model that holds a charge better, and with tariffs, the prices are only going to go up if we wait too long. And don't mind that snotty Gen-Z guy, Myra. He'll probably wait too long to get his new phone and the prices will be sky high. Can we say karma? Blessings!

    1. My phone's battery was it's undoing, too. Nothing's made to last (*sigh*).
I didn't even think about the tariffs. That's a good point.

  9. You know I knew it was a Gen Z - just from the way you described their reaction and snobbery to you. My grandson is a Gen Z and I love him to death - but he honestly doesn't have a lot of - it is not exactly respect - but it is a haughtiness against the aged. I see it.
Well, I am proud of you getting a new phone! So, for them to change it over there is a charge? Everything is a charge nowadays.

  10. I haven't read Tess Gerritsen in a long time. Need to look those up and thanks for the review! I've not seen James Gregory but will look him up for sure. I am so turned off by the gutter language so many comedians think they need to use. I hate getting a new phone. I like mine and especially because it has a decent camera. Good luck with yours and Tom's!

    1. True that ... change isn't always so pleasant. At least I can serve as comic relief if a GenZ needs a giggle, right?

  11. We are sticking to our flip phones, and we can change batteries if we need to. We did have to buy Andy a new one because he lost the old one in the snow last winter. No A/C here yet. It's been snowy and cold. I would much rather have that than the heat.

  12. Getting a new phone and having to deal with a cellular customer service tech ranks right up there with buying a used car. I absolutely hate it! You are right, they are condescending and act like you are inconveniencing them with your mere presence.

  13. I honestly believe that the cell phone companies control our phones. lol. how is it that just as the phone is paid in full, the thing suddenly starts having issues and eventually crashes. They've got us!! Now you have me wanting to listen to this comedian. I wrote his name down so that I can join in on the fun. Love that little gardenia!! I told Sam that when I pass, I want the church to be filled with gardenia bushes...My all time favorite. lol. Our air has been on a couple of times. Crazy when you have to turn the air on one day cause the Texas heat is so bad, and the next couple of days you have to have the fireplace going. CRAZY! Big hugs to you.

  16. I have T-Mobile for my cellphone and go to the store when I need a new phone. I went about a year ago and got the next to newest version. They transferred my data and it was less expensive. A number of years I hung on to my phone for a long, long time and it was impossible to get photos off it.
