Coming on the heels of Resurrection Sunday ...
I wasn't particularly shocked -- but saddened -- at the news of Pope Francis' passing. While we know he's in a better place, my heart goes out to the Roman Catholic faithful who mourn.
I'm curious ...
What notable person's death most impacted you personally?
One of my early memories: Parents and teachers ... shop keepers, too. All sobbing one sunny November day in 1963.
Without having to think, my answer would be Diana. I think it was 3 days before I dared to re-apply eye make-up. Someone asked me, "Why are you so upset; you didn't know her." I beg to differ; everyone knew her.
Thanks for playing along today!
Update ... PS.
Reading your thoughts, of course. It's understandable a parent, spouse or child's death would feel the most heartwrenching.
What I was referring to is the passing of a celebrity or other figurehead. Silly, perhaps to mourn someone you've never met. But isn't that human nature?
Hugs, Myra

Interesting post. Nobody's death has ever impacted my personality - - except the deaths of my parents.
ReplyDeleteIt's rather strange that many people are impacted by the deaths of people whom they never knew. And, of course, everyone who dies miraculously becomes a saint - - like JFK. Martin Luther King Jr etc. It irks me. The Pope is far (far far) from being Jesus. Yet he's worshipped senselessly.
I probably seem cold and cruel, but I'm a realist.
Okay, I was upset by Diana's unexpected death.
And the death of Queen Elizabeth, because she seemed to be timeless.
My comment is rather off course.
I've been visited by the ghost of Elvis. 🙂
Nothing wrong with being a realist, Jon. I agree, the media (at large) and society tends to almost idolize some. Wouldn't it be a kick to find out they weren't so very nice at all?
DeleteOne of your readers mentioned 9-11. Yes, I was impacted by that tragedy.
DeleteThe death that had the most significant to mr was that of my huaband. It changed my life completely. I did mourn for Elvis, President Kennedy and Dianna, but they didn't change my life. Hope you are enjoying some nice Spring days! Love, ma
ReplyDeleteOf course; I understand completely. Hugs!
DeleteWith the exception of my son’s death, it would be JFK. I was in the 4th grade. Another one was Robin Williams. I still haven’t watched any of his movies since plus it was the way he chose to die. My mom chose suicide as well and that’s probably why it bothered me so much.
ReplyDeleteWho'd have ever guessed he (Robin) was so tortured?
DeleteI understand about the death of JFK. You and I were the same age and at school when the news came to us over the loud speaker. It was horrible. I think I was in 8th grade, and it was definitely a shock that I've never forgotten. But as far as a death that impacted me personally...well, first it was my mother, and I realized I was a "motherless child", and then it was my father, and I realized I had no parents at all, but the worst was my son, in the prime of his life, (41), with a 15 year old son and a wife...and parents and brothers and many others who loved him and we all still miss him so much. Yes, I miss my mother and my father, and even my inlaws, but nothing quite hurts as much as losing a child no matter what their age. I know if the time comes that my husband goes before me, that will be extremely difficult to endure as I've NEVER been alone before...I got married so young (almost 19) and had never lived away from home before except to go to camp, and we've been together for almost 56 years now, and I can't imagine being alone. So I pray that God just takes us both together...the Rapture would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Princess Diana and Elvis and Queen Elizabeth, yes, those were sad and startling events, (except the Queen, she was ready to go, but still we'd watched her from our babyhood. She had ALWAYS been the Queen!) and we did mourn their passing in an appropriate way...but I can't say they had any major impact on my life like my loved ones did. I'm just so thankful I will see them again some day. Thanks to Calvary!!
Amen, this I believe!
DeletePlease see my "PS" above -- I should have rephrased my question more carefully.
Although they were not celebrities, and aside from my family that has passed, I would say for me it was a sweet local family here in my town. I witnessed them being hit by a train and they all died in the collision. This was difficult. And...all the people in the 911 attack. it is raining big time here...guessing you all may get it too. Have a good one today.
DeleteHow could I have not said those who perished on 9/11! Forever in our hearts.
DeleteHmm, let's see, as far as a celebrity passing the only two I remember that felt shook me up a bit was when JFK was shot in 1963. I do recall shedding a tear over that but I was a child (7 years old) and was only crying because everyone else was. "When I was a child, I thought like a child." That kinda thing. I also remember feeling profoundly sad when John Wayne passed in 1979. I don't think I cried though.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed day! 💞
John Wayne, yes.
DeleteMy heart breaks for the Roman Catholic faithful, too, Myra. And I recall to this day the trauma of JFK's death. That was the first time I ever saw my father cry. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteI remember. Witnessing a parent's tears can be a pivotal moment!
DeleteWe mourn peoples' absence from our lives because their presence had an impact on us personally. Obviously, the closer we were to that person the more we miss them when they die.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Mevely, for a very sober and reflective post. I'm sure it is much appreciated by your readers; especially me.
God bless.
That means a lot ... thank you, Victor.
DeleteI guess I was impacted by JFK's death since I had been in the band and marched in his inaugruation parade. I can't say I mourned but I was saddened by it. I was 18 at the time.
ReplyDeleteI have mourned for my folks but its more just missing the chats and fun times. I am so glad they are with the Lord and out of their pain.
I am saddened by the wasted lives of some celebrities that ended through drugs and lewd living.
Thanks for the thought provoking post today.
Sue
Me, too. I'm saddened by what's now regarded as the new normal.
DeleteYes, diana was my pick.... she still impacks our lives and hearts
ReplyDeleteDoesn't she, tho! I see her quite a bit in William.
DeleteWhen Robin Williams passed. That hit hard.
ReplyDeleteYes, I understand.
DeleteYes, that was sad new about the Pope. In grade school I lost two friends. One was very young and the other was a boy I was seeing. I think it was around 7th grade that he got hit by a car on his bicycle. You are right about Diana. I couldn't stop crying and watching all the news on TV.
ReplyDeleteDid you watch the funeral? That gutted me.
DeleteOf course my grandparents, my mother died at 56 and then my dad's passing about a week after Covid started and I couldn't attend his service in Florida. Then after that the most recent was by brother about 2 or 3 years ago.
ReplyDeleteSo many losses, yet we go on. I believe they'd want that.
DeleteI agree - of course we suffer family and friend loss. Celebrities too - that we have gotten close too. Princess Diana. Mother Teresa. But don't you read stories sometimes - sad - and someone really died a sad and tragic death - I feel so sad about too.
ReplyDeleteYes, exactly!
DeleteYes, we all loved Diana and felt like we knew her. I remember the loss of so many but losing my folks and my younger brother and then Joe just four years ago top any celebrity loss. Of course, JFK's assassination news came during Junior High band practice. We all were dismissed early. That's the first of too many.
ReplyDeleteYes. Hugs!
DeleteI don't cry when a well known personality dies, but I do feel sad. I did cry over and over when 911 happened, I knew none of them but the horror had me cried daily.
ReplyDeleteI loved Diana and her wedding and followed the news on her.
things that make me cry are the war dogs dying or their handlers dieing..
Yes! Both to 911 and hero dogs; the accounts gutted me.
DeleteSo many celebrity deaths...and being upset...but nothing compares to losing one's son...anyways, wishing you a lovely week ahead.
ReplyDelete🥲 yes.
DeleteNov 22 1963 will forever be in my heart. What a terrible loss and shame on the Kennedy family not wanting to dig up the past. God Lord my own parents knew LBJ was behind it all. It is all plain as day and my SIL Cheri, recently in Dallas for her grandsons hockey tournament would tell you, it is all there in the Depository word for word. I am grateful it came out but the Kennedys are a weird bunch. I will take RFK any day over the resto of the hateful bunch. Sorry it is how I feel. My phamily losses have been too many, But Mother Teresa & Diana passing on the same day. Mother Teresa was not one for fanfare so it is a blessing the Good Lord took her home quietly. Diana was loved worldwide. Not much good I can say about the rest of the royals. Grateful I am who I am. Sweet Andrea is struggling with the passing of her dad. I give her breathing room and contact her every other day. Ed was a larger than life fellow. She took his ukulele collections and hng it in their home so she will always have a piece of her dad nearby. Ed was amazing, little things like that he kept private. I hope you are having a good week.
