Wednesday Hodgepodge

Happy Hodgepodge Wednesday, y'all!
... and thanks to Joyce, our hostess with the most-est!

Without further ado, let's play!

What's a lesson you've learned from a mistake?

I've mentioned this before, but more than 50 years later I still cringe.  The bashful girl that was me lost a coveted job -- not because I wasn't qualified, but because I didn't (couldn't) make eye contact with the interviewer.

Do you salt food while you're cooking or let diners add their own?  I let others season their own.

What's a food you think must be salted?  I love salty foods, but haven't used it (much) in years.  When I lobbed this question to Tom he emphatically replied, "Tomato."

Do you like pepper?   That's a hard 'yes'!  Sometimes I wonder if I should be embarrassed by the amount I use while at a restaurant.

What was the last gathering you attended and what did you do there?

Each Monday morning at ladies Bible study.  Most of the time there's just as much yakking and eating going on ... two of my favorite things.

Your favorite shade of purple?  Eggplant

What's your favorite purple flower?  Wisteria

Years ago (while living in Arizona) we had to call out a professional to remove a big hive of African bees.  Spotting our neighbor's big purple flowering(?) bush he remarked that they hate the color purple.  I later learned they're actually infatuated by/drawn to the color purple.  Either way, that's not something I want to plant.  Or wear!

Share a favorite spring travel memory

It's hard to choose just one ... but I'm going with a 1984 cruise vacation we enjoyed with gal-pal, "PJ the DJ."

When I say I love cruising, I'm not talking about today's mega liners that feel more like cattle calls -- overcrowding, mediocre food and service --- that feel more like collegiate Spring break.

Back in the day we were blessed to enjoy smaller ships where white glove service and leisurely dining was the norm.

Insert your random thought here

So, let me ask y'all a question.

We're only expecting the kids for Easter dinner and I ordered a Honey Baked ham ... mostly on account he's been talking about that for years.  Because neither Troy or I are particularly fond of ham, what do y'all suggest I get to complement the pink pig?

I'm doing Caesar salad, scalloped potatoes and broccoli ...any other family favorites you can recommend?
(Bonus points for little labor-intensive and Keto friendly)

Thanks so much!

Hugs, Myra

  1. My favorite easter protein is herb and mushroom stuffed boneless leg of lamb. It would not so much compliment the ham as it would one up it. I have often served both with our Easter meal.

  2. I think the things you are going to make to accompany the ham are perfect, and easy peasy too. That's my favorite way of cooking.
Not sure what we are doing for Easter. Usually we have been invited to a great get together of our former churches friends...haven't heard anything this time and perhaps we will just have a simple dinner at our place.. to be continued...

  3. Our family would always want Deviled Eggs with ham! I love wisteria, but it is invasive...but so pretty while blooming. I've never been on a cruise of any size, and not sure I'd want to. I'm pretty much a land lubber. LOL. I enjoyed your answers and those pictures are wonderful! Looks like fun memories!

  4. My family wouldn't consider Easter dinner complete without a side of pineapple stuffing to go with their ham. Here's a link to a recipe similar to mine.

We don't eat ham really except Easter and Christmas Day so I look forward to it. I agree tomatoes need salt and eggplant is my favorite purple too.

  5. I had to admit it - but we are just three - and we have a restaurant we go to every year - our tradition.
Forgive yourself for lake of eye contact - I am sure you learned a big lesson.
I salt little and pepper a lot too!
You don't seem like a big eater to me at your Bible Study. We don't eat at ours. lol
The good old days were really good weren't they?

    1. Yes, ma'am! I'd always opt for holiday dinners at a restaurant, but have learned to pick my battles.

  6. A lesson learned from a mistake? Impossible! My life has been filled with more mistakes and regrets than I'd care to remember. Many bitter lessons were learned.
I can completely identify with the eye contact thing. To this day, I have difficulty making eye contact....but I try.
LSalt? Hungarians love salty things. If you gave my father a bowl of salt to eat, he'd salt it before eating😁 what's a food I need to salt? A hardboiled egg.
My favorite purple flowers are the lilacs.
    The last gathering I attended?
Probably an anti-war protest when I was a quasi hippie.

    1. That's so funny about the bowl of salt! Somehow I can't picture you at an anti-war protest ... glad to know you now.

  7. Have you thought of lamb chops or rack of lamb, Myra? I can't attest to whether or not it's time intensive, though. Our Easter meal will be simple because it's just the two of us this time around. So glad you will have family at yours! Blessngs!

  8. I could tell you I made 2 mistakes of the same type, bad ones and yet learned nothing, but it would be to embarrassing to list them.
Easter dinner should Good to me, we are eating ham all week, because I did not want to cook, and WM for the first time ever had HALF a ham spiral cut and ready to eat.
a whole is to much for us.
I like seeing you in photos from the past and reading about things you did in the past because it means I know more about you.. I don't cook with salt, except what is in things like Spagetti and I don't eat it but Salt Man does, he salts everything, and peppers. I am no salt, no pepper, no sugar.. I DO LOVE POTATOE CHIPS, the do not love Me but I do break down now and then. my favorite salty thing is/was peanuts of any kind

    1. Have you tried 17 seasoning? That's what the hospital dieticians provided at Tom's last stay. Sometimes difficult to find on store shelves, but I order from Amazon.

  9. Myra, I would be content with the scalloped potatoes but there always seems to be the need for something green but maybe a fruit salad. But wait...are you considering another protein. If you are I'd go with lamb chops. :) Happy Hodgepodge!

  10. I love lamb chops. Scalloped potatoes are great. Myra, you have a lovely blog and I really enjoyed my visit and the way you have your blog set up.

  11. Ham is too salty for me, and we don't cook something special for Easter. When I think of when I was a kid it was always roast of lamb. I associate that with Sundays.

    1. The last time I tasted lamb must have been 1950-something!

  12. Deviled eggs. I always do deviled eggs for Easter. My very Baptist grandma called the "dressed eggs" to keep from using the devil word! Your dinner sounds great. I'm doing similar and love ham. xo

    1. That's so cute! I want to start calling them that, too.

  13. To complement the ham I suggest a few bottles of nice wine, red, white or rose, the colour does not matter as long as it is alcoholic and there's plenty of it.

I did not know bees like the colour purple. I was told it was yellow.

    God bless always, my friend.

  15. gurl, I am with you on the pepper and sometimes when cook, I forget that not everyone like pepper like I do. And, I love salt on tomatoes, watermelon, and even apples! I know it's not good for us though. Let's see..not everyone in my family likes ham and even though sausage is pork, I always sliced the sausage, brown it, and cover with bbq sauce. And...Deviled eggs for sure. One thing that is always on our table when the family comes for dinner is Mac Cheese.. goodness, my grown kiddos would be devastated if I didn't have this dish.

  16. thecontemplativecat here. The ham dinner sounds great. Ham is about the only part of a pig that I like. I grew up on a hog farm and had enough of pigs in any form.

  17. That's too bad about the job. I like pepper too! How wonderful to enjoy your Bible study like that. I like the colors your picked. That's interesting about the bees. The smaller ship does sound nice to me. Glad you enjoyed that trip. I'd say make something that you like. You could do a small roast. I'm not a big fan of ham either. The rest of your meal sounds delicious.

  18. I would say a small roast, smiles...and I love pepper too. And I think it's safe to say, most of us have lost those kinds of jobs for various reasons as well. Now, I speak up (but also know when to keep it shut). Wishing you a beautiful weekend my friend.
