As Winter approaches, how do you stay productive?
Not only Winter, but if I'm going to get things accomplished, I need to do so before sitting down to eat. Full tummy and my brain's like, "Okay, I'm done for today."
What's a popular food you don't like?
Strawberries ... sushi ... sweet potatoes
What do you think is more interesting -- art or history. Elaborate.
What a poser! Off the top of my head, I'm going with history.
...Because (I think) art is more a self-fullfilling pursuit. The artist is creating for him/herself, and if others appreciate it, all the better.
History is largely self-less -- there for us to learn from. Y'all know the rest, "... not doomed to repeat."
These are just my thoughts; I'm interested to hear yours.
What advice would you give to someone half your age?
Start saving for retirement NOW. Don't presume someone will always be there to support you. Time is a thief.

Does anyone else ever pause in the middle of a book to let a certain phrase/sentence marinate in your consciousness?

yes, yes, yes, I do pause and read and re read some sentences, or even a paragraph and a few I write down and I want to get to the point I take a photo of what I read because I can't remember anything now.
ReplyDeleteI only read fiction, but there is a lot of really good knowledge to be gained and I even sometimes get insight into things going on in my life or inside my HEAD which is where I live a lot.
the thing I dislike the most of all food that others love is ONIONS! I can't eat them, I can't even eat food that they touch and if I peel them for Bob the onion lover, I have to use bottle lemon juice on my hands because the smell makes me crazy. I can't vouch for sushi because I have never and never will tasted it.
"In my head" ... boy, I can relate! Great idea to use my phone to capture a bit of prose; I'm going to remember and do that.

ReplyDeleteHistory is important if we learn from it. Years ago my teacher said: Your grammar stinks. It is history now, but I learnt from it not to breathe too deeply next to grandma.

DeleteI am with you on veterans and our military in general. Very much taken for granted. I often pause when reading. Sometimes I'll jot down a line from a book that hits me in some way. Hope you have a great day!

DeleteYes!! Yes! Our military is under-appreciated. Strange for me to say this after seeing so many post on veterans day honoring our vets, but one day isn't enough...They deserve so much more and our veterans need better health care. Tofu and Onions.
ReplyDeleteMy friends make fun of me for never eating onions. The older I get, the more I understand the importance of History. My choice would be Art...I suppose I might be right brained. I am also a visual person, so when reading, I do have to stop...imagine in my mind...what the scene is or what the author is writing. Wishing you a Wednesday that overflows with positivity..
Yes, I do the same thing when reading. I try never to watch a movie or televised adaption from a book because I'm invariably disappointed in the producers' choices.
DeleteI love strawberries and sweet potatos and they are both good for us. There isn't much I don't like, can't think of anything except maybe chicken gizzards. My dad used to love them and insisted we all ate them. Haven't had them in years but will never forget that one thing I didn't like . I happen to think both art and history are wonderful. I can't say one is better than the other. I like them both. I'm not one for winter at all. I tend to sleep more and hibernate like a bear. However a good book to read is my favorite if I'm going to do something. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Love, ma

DeleteI totally agree with you about veterans - my husband was in Viet Nam. I like strawberries and sweet potatoes - I agree with you about the sushi! Yuck. DeleteI was lamenting to a friend that Veterans shouldn't have only one day a year for recognition of their service and sacrifice, but we should be mindful of them day in and day out. I mean, really, if there can be a Gay Pride Month, shouldn't the vets get at least a month, too? Let's see what Pete Hegseth can do!

100% on that idea, Martha. Were it not for our veterans, the gay population might well be persecuted and put to death like what's being done in the Middle East.
DeleteI love a good strawberry - yum!! Saving money is always a good thing though I fought with Mark about it when we were younger. Now I'm so glad he is financially savvy. That is a profound quote from your book!!!

DeleteThat is true about our veterans. They give their lives for us. I have been pushing myself each day to work on a project each day. Now I have to focus on Christmas. It keeps me up at night! I'm with you on the sushi. I do like the other two you listed. You're right about history but I just can't get into it. I do love art, especially at a museum. That is great advice about saving money. DeleteGreat, great answers to every question. I so agree with you about our veterans. My younger brother was in VietNam twice, so thankful he came home. I have distant cousin that died in WWII, his loss was so upsetting to my Mother. Nope, no sushi for me, strawberries, I can take them or not, but sweet potatoes....YUMMY.

I never used to save phrases (etc.) until recently I could find something and couldn't remember what book it came from. I've looked everywhere! Grrr.
History for me too. Hands down.
ReplyDeleteThe advice you gave, SPOT ON. Time is a thief. I'm glad I did start saving but wish I had done so sooner and put more in the account than I thought than I could. I didn't "need" all those new vehicles or motorbikes. I could have saved more. Oh, and buying land. That's always a winner. 99.9% of the time it goes up in value. 😊
Land, yes! My parents weren't wealthy, but my father used to purchase lots here and there for investment. Sadly, not of them came to fruition, but it still meant a lot to him.

DeleteVeterans are the only reason we have lived in a free country for so long. My heartaches for thee treatment the receive, especially healthcare because they deserve more. I would like to see them switch places with undeserving people sitting in high places who take, take take from the taxpayer and live like kings while many can barely live like paupers. We do like sushi. Too many years of hard times, illness, job loss, etc. to have much leftover for retirement. I stopped being bitter about my last job and the loss of it. That doctor was so incredible cheap and was pulling in at least 1 million or more in income with the cheap retirement he had for us. I talk too much. I am sorry. I enjoy all your posts. Thanks for being a friend.
