Did you watch any coverage of the 9/11 services on Monday? How do you feel on this day some 22 years after the events occurred? Share more if you want.
I didn't watch any coverage on Monday; however, 60 Minutes Overtime aired a riveting-but-heartbreaking episode Sunday night.
As I told another blogger -- despite being thousands of miles away -- I was devastated. It's like there are two of me:
the person I was before 9/11, and who I am today.
It rerouted my mind's wiring. My emotions.

Not having fajita seasoning on hand, I used chili oil, minced garlic and cumin. AND peanuts (v. pecans).
Next time, I'm going to use fresh spinach, but otherwise it was a win.

My Taos' features are a bit overwhelming. For instance: This morning I was headed to pick up my WM order when, all of a sudden, my cell phone rang -- through the 'information station' at an ear-splitting decibel. Glad I wasn't travelling 70 mph across a bridge (lol).
Since the last time I bought a car was in 2005, I really need an 8 y/o to come sit in the passenger seat and walk me through these things. Hey y'all, I'm old.

Tell us about a job you worked 'for peanuts'?
That was the part-time clerical job I took at a local funeral home/cemetery in Montgomery.
Following my retirement, I'd been experiencing a bit of cabin fever and jumped at the first offer/opportunity.
Not only was the pay pitiful, but the stress level something I couldn't abide. (My uncle having been an undertaker, the workplace wasn't off-putting ... rather, the hard-sell atmosphere when folks are at their most fragile.)

I think a hard sell atmosphere in a funeral home is despicable! I think most of them are that way.

Hard sell in funeral homes? Her it is worse on TV. We have a lot of adverts on how to arrange your funeral before you go. Pay for it in one go or by instalments. Choose whether you want a "themed" funeral or you prefer cremation. Choose the music, food, guest list and so on "before you go" so that your family can enjoy the day and your memories.
The adverts are becoming more hard-sell; implying that if you have not planned your funeral (with us) you are not a considerate loving person towards your family.
I'm sure this is causing great distress to elderly people; especially those who cannot afford the costs - currently about £5,000 per funeral.

Thank you, Victor. While I appreciate that my mother had invested in a pre-planned service/burial, this 'business' is a big turn-off to me. I've told my son to take the least expensive way 'out' (no pun intended) and use the $ to throw a big bash celebration of life with good food, drink and laughter.
DeleteThis was nutty and fun. Loved that last two memes. Oh, years ago when I was a stay at home mom with toddlers and baby in the background I worked some "telemarketing" for a cemetery, trying to drum up business for salesmen actually doing the selling of cemetery plots. I was conducting a survey, asking questions about whether or not people had thought of buying cemetery plots. To make a long story short, it was TERRIBLE. I'll never forget the one mother who had just buried her child, and I had the audacity to ask her if she ever thought of buying cemetery plots. (before I knew about her child, which she promptly told me in tears and said "how could you ask me that???) That was it. I was done. The company begged me to stay on as they said I was doing a great job. I said I could never prey on people's emotions like that ever again. The end!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, we love lightly-salted peanuts. Probably should do the unsalted, but lightly salted aren't bad.
We also discussed 9/11 at our ladies' Bible Study Monday, mostly about where we were then, and yes, how it has changed our society and how young people today have no clue what life was like before 9/11, but they also don't understand the significance of that horrific event. We will never forget and never be the same again. I did not watch any programming this year. It's just too hard for me to watch. Hubby's 1st cousin died in one of the towers. Very difficult.

Oh, what a terrible coincidence! My heart goes out -- both to you and that grieving mother. I didn't realize you had a loved one who perished at the Trade Center. That must make 9/11 even more painful. xo
DeleteI've worked for peanuts in several jobs and they were among the best jobs ever, starting with waitiressing in college. I didn't love it, but it gave me extensive practice in meeting people and keeping my calm, even when I would have preferred to throw a tray of dishes against the wall. It also paid for a year of college and my graduate school expenses.

Deletein 1984 before Bob, i worked 3 jobs to pay bills. flea market selling earrings, the man paid me 20 dollar bill at end of sat/sun 8 hour day. Peanuts. Mon/friday waitress at Country Kitchen, ha ha ha less than peanuts. the people who ate there had no money to give tips, less than peanuts, but two jobs for peanuts and 30 hours at Sears paid the bills. I was working 62 hours a week
ReplyDeleteI love peanuts, unsalted better than salted and since i can't eat crunchy i buy cans of boiled and eat them in my pasta salads. or just eat them, most of my protein is from peanuts and peanut butter

We lived outside of D.C. on 9/11 and one of my friend's husband was George Bush's #1 secret service agent. My hubs home office is just outside NYC and we have friends who had an office in the tower (he wasn't there that day). Hubs brother worked in the financial district but was traveling that day. We know many whose lives and families were personally impacted by the event and I know i won't ever think of it as just another day. The sky is so blue in September and that is another reminder of that beautiful morning that turned so absolutely tragic. Have we become complacent? Somewhat. I think we're naive about what is happening at the border for sure. Not everyone strolling in to our country is here for good. I'll hush now : )

DeleteI lovr peanuts, both the cartoon and the legume, called peanuts. I eat the non salted ones too, but never tried any in my salad before. I'll have to give it a go and see how like that. Thanks for the nutty post today ! We are very chilly here and it feels like October, maybe I should try some freshly roasted peanuts, still warm.

ReplyDeleteI don't comment about 9-11 anymore, it ruffles too many peoples feathers. But I read the books written by wives who lost their men that fateful day. They were smart enough to know there was more the it than most prefer to believe. Same with OKC Bombing which most people never really acknowledged anyway. We we saw the families of those lost because the trial was set in Denver. I had to drive Avery to work everyday because we had one car back then. We drove right in front of the federal building where the trial was held. Heartbreaking....
