If you had to flee this life and there was a possibility to actually live in a place based on a story or book or movie, which would you choose. Why?
How about The Woman in Cabin 10?
It's no secret, I used to adore cruising -- when ships actually resembled ships, not an over-crowded albatross.
Why?
For starters, I'd never have to clean house.
Dining was an intimate, elegant experience.
Imagine waking up to a whole new vista every morning ... the waves gently rocking me to sleep each night.
What kind of story line do you just not like either in books or movies?
Please, no sci-fi. No historical fiction.
This sounds terribly selfish, but if I can't identify on some level with the characters or setting, I'm challenged to enjoy it.

How many of the Great Classics have you read and/or popular book series?
I'm sure I've read a Classic or two while in school, but that was a looooong time ago -- and I don't much like being told what to read.
There are reading playlists available for various genres of literature. Do you play any music while reading?
Interesting ... like a movie soundtrack!
Unlike sitting in a darkened theater, however, I think it would feel terribly distracting.

Funny thing about life, I NEVER in a 100 years would have thought I would read e-books. I am stuck on the 100-200 page Westerns. I NEED to get back to the great writers of today.
ReplyDeleteBook or era? I am still the kid at heart, I would love the banks fo the Mississippi with Tom Sawyer. Yep that is my mind set. LOL
As always we do enjoy this visit to your house, and I also would like a cruise where the passengers were fewer. To tell the truth I miss the sea even on a USN ship, but would like to return to port more often for family! ;-)
I agree. No Sci-Fi or historical fiction. I like Star Trek but nothing else; and besides, it only lasts an hour on TV. The films are far too long!
ReplyDeleteI had to do the Classics at school. But I ask myself WHY? Is it essential to have read/studied Shakespeare? Which play? All of them? Or just some? I also had to study the French and Italian classics - Moliere, Balzac, Camus, Goldoni anmd others. None helped when ordering a meal at a French of Italian restaurant. I liked Chaucer though!

I will read just about anything with the exception of romance novels, which are not my thing at all.

I have read a lot of the classics, but still see no point in anyone reading The Mill on the Floss or Lord Jim.
the only classic I read were the ones forced on me in highschool. Tom Sawyer, and the guy that buried people in walls and hearts thumped, and for some reason I have lost his name in the 8 ball that is my head. the only one i read willingly was Little Women. I tried to read it in kindle and started to gag.
ReplyDeleteI am a Jack Reacher fan, and all things action packed. that started in 1985 when we watched all the Lethal Weapons, Die Hards and stuff like that. before that it was Historical Novels, that now I can't stand to read. as a child i Read Tarzan and the city of gold about 10 times, does that count?
about the picture of the reading nook. I looked at it and before i read the writing under it, thought where is the ottoman, then i thought that chair would kill my back, where is the recliner ? the only thing i like in the photo is the wall of books, but not if they are sci fi or fantasy.. yes I am picky. just who decides what is a classic. that is my question.
all of this gobbledy gook I just wrote I can say in one sentence.
I love to read, I read only what i love and everyone should do the same thing. read what you love to read and don't listen to what others think you should read.
I think you are talking about The Tell Tale Heart by Robert Louis Stevenson and I was made to read it for school too.

DeleteI do love the cruise life of about 35-40 years ago when I took 2 cruises with various family members. I do not like being told what to read either. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading "Love Stories of the Bible Speak" by Shannon Bream. It excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone, Myra. I do love a good mystery, too!

Oh, I love a good mystery. I prefer books by Christian authors so I don't get embarrassed by the action. LOL. But I do enjoy good historical fiction as well, depending upon who it is about. I have a collection of some historical fiction about some of the Civil War general's wives, and some of the Presidents' of that era's wives as well. It helped me to see the war and life at the time from their perspective... Regarding going on a cruise...I have terrible motion sickness and that thought about being rocked to sleep makes me sick just thinking about it. LOL. But always having my meals prepared and served and room kept clean w/ maid service, etc., I could get used to that. I just want to be on solid ground, thank you very much. LOL. I hope you have a wonderful week. The only book I would tell someone to read would be the Bible. But one can't force that either. However, it is full of mystery, intrigue, adventure, romance and hope...and a happy ending for those who believe! That's the best book ever! Love ya.
ReplyDeleteI agree on not being told what to read. My aunt used to cruise to the Netherlands every year to visit family. The older ships were glorious and their menus were delicious. She would save the big menus for me to have. She'd sail on the Rotterdam and she also was on the Queen Mary back in the day. She enjoyed it so very much.

ReplyDeleteThat's a very tough one - there are too many choices. Today I'm probably in the mood to be transported to the Great Gatsby era - - as long as I was young and wealthy.
I love the cruise ships of the golden bygone eras. Unfortunately, class, elegance, and culture are now nearly dead.
I agree - - no sci-fi or historic fiction. I read very many of the classics when I was young. I'm glad I did it then, because lately it would be tedious.
I missed the Tuesday 4. It posted too late for me to do it last night. I enjoyed your answers!! I've not read the book about cruising but it sounds like a great plan! I'm with you on Sci-Fi but do enjoy historical fiction. Love & hugs!!

ReplyDeleteI'm unusual, I don't like fiction books, I prefer history, biographies, and memoirs. I've had trouble with eyestrain all my life so audio books are a real blessing for me, as is Kindle because I can read in large print.

DeleteI do love to read and beach books and a cottage by the sea, take me away to where I love to be. I've traveled many places in books, some I'd love to see. I could never spend a whole day without reading a book. They are a part of my life now. Hope you enjoy the books you read too. Love, ma
