Tuesday's Matter

 ..... Like 'Currently', only different!

Matter -- (noun)  An affair or situation under consideration; a topic.

   Good morning!

This was supposed to be 'Monday's Matter' but yesterday's best laid plans sort of imploded.  I've got lots to yak about, but let's start with the FUN stuff.

🎉🎉🎉

Those of you on Facebook already know what a Good Time I enjoyed Saturday morning.

Since moving here, sure.  I'd heard about Millbrook's infamous Mardi Gras celebrations -- purportedly the largest outside of the coast.   I dunno.  Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but Mardi Gras has never held much appeal for me.

That is, until I learned from church friends, Sean Dietrich (aka, Sean of the South) was the parade's Grand Marshal.   Hot doggedy!

I sure wasn't expecting Tom to wake up in such extreme pain that we thought I'd have to take him to the E.R.

Thankfully, about an hour later he rallied.  Big whew!

18-year veterans of the festival, Cindy and Frank had cautioned us to "arrive early", but neither of us was prepared to see what looked like double the population -- all looking for a place to park along the parade route.

Sometimes church music directors, sometimes Revelers

Almost 2 hours early, we ducked into the Smokehouse for one of the best breakfasts I've enjoyed in years.

Would you get a load of the size of Tom's pancakes?!   I had the breakfast bowl -- a goodly portion of grits, covered with over-easy eggs and topped with spicy sausage.

No-one claimed to know anything if Sean would be at the festival signing autographs or photo opps.  Thankfully, I'd reached out on his website to ask.   Jamie (his wife) replied, that while she'd be at the beach with childhood friends, Sean planned to be at the Rex -- an adjacent beer/wine joint -- at 1:15.

Lawdy, you'd have thought it was February 1964 -- not 2023, and I was hoping to catch sight of You Know Who.  (lol!)   Yes, I've had a bit of an adult crush on Sean for years.  Fan girl.

My 'loot'!

Random Reveler dog

Sweet baby girl.
When one of the Revelers tossed her this stuffed unicorn she was over the moon.

🎉

Even with Tom's rollator there was no way we'd attempt to navigate the festival itself, but Tom suggested, "Let's at least drive by the Rex."   Not only was there ample parking, but Sean stood just inside the door shaking hands and hugging necks.   My friend Brenda (who'd met him before) agrees:  He looks you in the eyes and listens like you're the only person in the room.

I didn't know what to say, except 'Thank You.'   Then, "I'd like you to know (that) in large part, YOU are responsible for me being here in Alabama."

I explained how, prior to moving I was in a high-stress, unhappy work situation.  Reading his stories of Real (good) People in Real Places ... well, at first, I thought this sounds like something out of a Hallmark made-for-TV movie.     Then, I found myself longing to experience it for myself.

He looked genuinely surprised.  With a big grin, "Wow, Thank you for telling me that! Please give me a hug!"

Tom was more interested in meeting Marigold his blind rescue dog.
I strongly suspect Sean's friends kept her a little away from all the crazy people, but Tom walked over and petted her.  "So soft!  So sweet!"

🎉

In other news ...

I had my annual eye exam yesterday, and loved the new-to-me technician.  She's been with Dr. I for 38 years!

I won't be needing new glasses, but I am excited to have cataract surgery next month.  From what I've heard, it's going to be a whole new world.

I knew of an estate sale taking place nearby in Old Cloverdale, so we detoured that way.  While the objects d'arte and jewelry held little appeal, I love touring these enormous old homes with their period architecture, the furniture.

I needed these glass appetizer plates like I needed another hole in my head, but they still came home with us.  They're surprisingly heavy; I need to be careful!

I'm trying to down-size my portions and I think these pretty plates beats the faux Tupperware container I've been tossing in the microwave.

Looking forward to tomorrow night's Church meeting where (I hope) the congregation will vote to dis-affiliate from the United Methodist Church.  So weary of all the dissent!

Other than that, it's another Pleasant Valley Tuesday ... the sun's been shining for 4 days.  Woo-hoo!

Sorry for my exuberant ramblings on.
It's like I feel we're sitting across a table from one another and before you know it, they're flickering the lights.  Time to go!

  1. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've tried to sign up for Sean's blog to no avail. It just never connects as it should! I hate that I'm missing out on his humor and wisdom.
What a great celebration you all had in your own version off Mardi Gras, Myra. I would have enjoyed it myself.
Glad, too, that Tom managed to come around!
    Blessings!

    1. That's crazy about not getting his blog in your mailbox! Have you reached out to him and/or Jamie via the "Contact Me" box?

  2. Mardi Gras to me is the beginning of the Lenton season and I would usually be having pancakes too. But not this year. Oatmeal is going to have to do. I do have some beads to wear to celebrate with. Lent is about to begin and when it ends, Spring will come! That's something I've been looking forward too! Love, ma

    1. I'm embarrassed to admit, I didn't know the meaning of (timing) of Mardi Gras until Frank explained it to me. Fat Tuesday, who knew?

Our church voted to disaffiliate and it has had some negative impacts.

  5. I'm so glad you got to meet him and Marigold. I learned about him from you and I'm so glad you told us about him. I follow his blog and on FB too. I've 1 or 2 of his books. I'm just so happy for you. My sister had cataract surgery last year and she is so happy with the results. Hope you will be too.

  6. I really like those plates. Do they make square pizzas where you live?

Looks like you had a wonderful time. And met interesting people.

I'll need to check what is grit - we don't have it here.

Wishing you the best and prayers always. God bless.

    1. Back in the 50's and 60's the only place my father could get grits was in the Deep South. How I wish he'd lived long enough to find them almost everywhere. Here's a bit about them.

    2. Thanx Mevely.

In Britain, grits are those annoying scratchy things that fly at your windscreen in the depths of winter. If it's going to be very icy on the roads, lorries go out and grit the roads.

I remember when they ran out of grit they used those little granules people use in the cat's litter tray. This confused all the cats who went in the middle of the road instead.

I also discovered that edible grit is like polenta - ground yellow corn. I'd prefer that to eating what's in the litter tray.

      God bless.

  8. Okay I have never ever heard of the Millbrook Revelers. That was so cool - I looked them up.
I wish we lived nearer to you.
That breakfast looked wonderful and big.
You even got a picture with Rex.
I am going this Friday to the eye doctor to plan my cataract surgery - I am getting where I have a hard time seeing.
I have sad news about our Methodist church. They decided not to disaffiliate so we will be leaving after 37 years. Did you hear the bishop - at least ours - closed all churches from leaving. She said they were fed lies (I think a lot were leaving and she was shocked). So they will not talk about it again to the 2024 convention - even if then. I wonder if that is true for your area?

  9. I love your ramblings today. Mardi Gras loot and new plates, woohoo! I'm not familiar with Sean of the South, I will be looking him up, he sounds very interesting. Pancakes are so good, I can't eat them these days because I have to have lots and lots of syrup. Syrup and diabetes don't go well together!! I love grits too, those I still eat.

  10. I am sitting here bowled over by your exhuberance! I am so happy you got to meet Sean and Tom petted Marigold, I would have been with Tom on this one, but that doesn't mean I don't like Sean, he is a gifted writer for sure. I did not know you moved to AL because of him. your secret is OUT. I was raised on grits, can't live in Savannah without it. note it is an IT not them. we moved to KY and they had no clue what we were talking about. mother found it because we ate it, but no memory where. loved your post today, I feel HAPPY just reading it.

    1. Okay, my son and family had a lot to do with it (lol), but what he writes about is sure a contrast to the big city corporate 'stuff.'
Thank you for clarifying the 'them'/'it'! How embarrassing if I were asked to give back my newly-minted Southern card!

  12. Wow! What fun meeting Sean and getting a hug! Sounds like lots of fun times. It is nice to meet someone without airs or being so pretentious. He is decent and kind human being isn't he?I still don't need cataract surgery but Avery had both eyes done and he seems to see well. Second surgery was twice as updated. No black eye! Have a wonderful week. I am way behind posting and commenting. Take care.

  15. How wonderful for you that you actually got to meet and hug Sean of the South! I am excited for you! I can imagine how excited YOU were! Love your appetizer plates...they look like something you would love! I will be praying for your cataract surgery to go smoothly and that you will have a whole new outlook on the world when you are done. Just remember to use all the eye drops like they tell you. I haven't had it done yet, but I went through it with my father and remember how important that was! Re: the disaffiliation from the UMC, our church has also chosen to disaffiliate. There's a lot going on out there to try and keep our churches from cutting the ties that bind us, but we are determined to do so. Praying all goes well for your church and ours. It hasn't been an easy process. But God is in control and I believe we will win. Take care my friend. Oh, that breakfast looked amazing!

    1. Thanks, Pam! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the 3 Rx drops/4x a day has been amended. Now there's only 1 -- an "all in one" she explained at a much more affordable price point.
