Good morning friends!
This was supposed to be "Foodie Friday" but Life happened. No worries. I'm just glad to see y'all!
I've evolved from the girl who'd turn green at the thought of eating anything before Noon to someone who's favorite meal is breakfast. Tom's appetite peaks around 7PM; he enjoys his usual meal around 2 or 3AM.
So I recently asked Dr. Google, "Is hunger a biological rhythm?" (Some of it's interesting, but I'm not going to bore you with details.) At this time in our lives neither of us is likely to change our spots. Gotta pick my battles, right?
Aside from one traumatic church supper my parents dragged me to (think lutefisk), I feel blessed. As a child, I wasn't made to eat anything I didn't like. Spoiled much?
Consequently, eating has become my favorite hobby.
... and a week after the fact, I'm still disappointed.
Learning one of our Arizona favorite eateries has a sister property only spitting distance from the eye doctor, I was capital-letter Excited. Unfortunately, we arrived together with half the well-heeled population of Birmingham. An hour's wait time wasn't in the cards; besides I felt woefully underdressed in a hoodie and running shoes. (Note to self: denizens of Scottsdale dress far more casually.)
Have any of y'all tried making your own French Onion soup? Is it terribly labor intensive for just one?
A few days ago it was Tom's turn.
I enjoy supporting 'Ma and Pa' places and wanted to try a new soul-food restaurant. Wow. I did everything but lick my plate -- baked chicken, collards, fried-green tomatoes and my first-time tasting squash casserole. Tom thought his fried chicken was something left over from the day before and wouldn't even try the collards or squash. (Granted, I was probably the same way at his family's Polish Christmas Eve supper.)

i wish i could get bob to feed himself, i have hand fed him for 39 years so no going back. your dinner is perfect, i LOVE squash casserole and squash anything at all.. yum.. would not like polish food. I am southern fried to the bone. bob is too now that i have fed him all this time. he even loves collards. I have never eaten my meals at any time other than 7, 12, and 5 ... daddys rules that went with me to my family life and now bob does that too. the only problem now is he goes to bed at 7 or 7:15 which is just to early
ReplyDeleteI think there's a certain comfort in routine -- but all that went out the window in 2013 when Tom had the lung cancer and wouldn't eat. I've grown content to let him eat what he wants, when he wants!
DeleteOh my! You are making me hungry with all these ideas and descriptions. But eating in the middle of the night sounds a bit too much for me...does he sleep most of the day? I don't know how he can stand it. But to each his own. Your meal with the collards and squash casserole, etc., sounds REALLY good!! We eat pretty much simple casual meals now that it's just us here. BUT, we do eat at regular times, 7 a.m. 11:30-12 noon, and no later than 5 for supper unless it is something really special and we have no other choice. Hubby's tummy time clock is very programmed and if it gets off kilter, so does he...talk about "hangry". LOL. Like yesterday we had a Dr. appt. out of town, and didn't get out of there until 12:30 ish, and then had to find a place to eat lunch, driving through traffic, etc. With help from our son via the phone telling us of a good place and google maps directing the way, we made it before someone fainted dead away from starvation. LOL. But then of course there was no dilly dallying on the way home...I wanted to go look at the beach because we were only a stone's throw away, but no, we were "off schedule" and needed to head straight home cause it was an hour's drive and it was already past our nap time. LOL (you think I'm kidding...) But the nap did feel good since I hadn't slept the night before, so missing the beach was okay with me. This was fun. Thank you for opening the mic to us. LOL
ReplyDeleteYes, he's had sleep 'issues' for a few years now. I try not to schedule any appointments, etc. before noon. Hey, I know ALL about 'hangry' and "staaaaaarving my guts out." Tom just rolls his eyes and doesn't say anything -- not that it would do any good.
DeleteNaps are such an indulgence; I'm headed that way now!
I would have enjoyed the collards, squash casserole, chicken and all. Hubby and I had Texas Roadhouse for our lunch and I had grilled chicken smothered in onions, mushrooms and creamy gravy. Delicious!
ReplyDeleteI've not been there in years, but your smothered chicken sounds delicious!

ReplyDeleteYummmmmmmmmmm...we just got home. Hubby wanted to hit up a couple thrift stores, the grocery store and then McDonalds for a hamburger-which was good. ANYWAYS, pouring rain here in central Florida and darn right chilly and I think leftover beef stew and grilled cheese sounds good for dinner here, grin. Thanks for the many smiles. P.S. Tom has no idea what he is missing, grin.
ReplyDeleteYour leftover stew and grilled cheese sounds perfect!
DeleteOkay... now I'm ready for something to eat! I agree with Linda... Tom has no idea what he is missing!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid to tell him, on account he might make me eat a pierogi!
DeleteJust got in. It's 20 past midnight; so it's Sunday morning here. And you made me hungry ... again.
ReplyDeleteLet's see what's in the kitchen. At times like these I just open the fridge and wonder about all the questions of life.
God bless.
Late night snacks can be entertaining. Just imagine what might lurk within!
DeleteI do love my meals at regular times, but after this most recent visit to my doc, I found out I've put on two pounds since my last visit. That wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the 10 I put on from the beginning of Covid. I've always been thin, and the doctor assures me that I've a long way to go before I could even be described as fat, but after years of skinniness, this still bothers me. I really have to watch what and how much I eat going forward. So much for doing what you want when you get older - HA!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Myra, and enjoy the food for me!
Oh, I feel that. Say, I'm no expert, but if your doctor (and Danny!) aren't concerned, I wouldn't worry.
DeleteWhen it comes to comfort food, to each his own. You two seem to have worked out a way around your food preferences and eating times. Glad he likes fixing his own food when he's hungry. That helps immensely. Enjoy your food and each day as it comes. Love, ma
ReplyDeleteNot certain, but I think it's all about compromise.
DeleteThat meal looks yummy and thanks for the recipe for the Cauliflower Dip Recipe.

DeleteOh my goodness, what a yummy meal. I love squash casserole and used to make it often. Yep, I'm having fun hope you are too.
ReplyDeleteI'm just sorry it took me so long to taste!
DeleteIt seems like most restaurants here in the Bham area require a long wait! Where did you go to get the yummy squash casserole? I love good squash casserole!!
ReplyDeleteThat came from a little 'mom and pop' cafe right here in Millbrook, "Hometown Kitchen." I'm still holding out hope to visit the Summit's Village Tavern for a bowl of their incredible french onion soup.
