Hope y'all enjoyed a nice weekend? Let's see if I can't share an update without benefit of prompts. Thanks for bearing with me. (*smile*)
First, I'm enormously grateful our home, our community was largely spared the wrath of Hurricane Sally.
Although the rain was intense, unlike our neighbors we never lost power -- and the possibility of tornadic winds never materialized.
Sure surprised that Tom seemed more concerned than me this time around. Oh man, he's so going to kill me for this! (Or would, if he ever reads this blog. Ha.) We had to put on our heavy rubber boots and walk the dogs out front. While they absolutely refuse to go out back, it hasn't crossed their little doggie minds that the front yard's actually more inclined to flood.
Wow, waking up to a sparkly clear 61-degree morning felt sooo good! Tom's still not comfortable integrating to in-person church services; but for the first time in 6 months I went. There were only 30 in attendance, but it felt darn good to put on nice clothes and make-up!

Given so many "Do Not!" signs populating waiting rooms everywhere, I love the softer verbiage:
"Yes, Please sit here!! This pew please! SIT!"
Well, I finally got my air fryer!
I thought we were just going to 'look see', and was shocked when Tom picked up the box and set it in the cart.
In the end, we went with the Ninja Foodi -- not only for its user
reviews, but the way it tucks up vertically, providing badly needed counter space.

Tom's already made pizza three times + garlic crostini.
'Have to admit, its inaugural run was less than stellar. Tom bought a bag of raw chicken wings and asked me to fire it up. Unbeknownst to him, however, I've had a Real Aversion to touching raw poultry since being served undercooked (bloody) chicken at college freshman orientation.
(Nope, I've never even made fried chicken.)
Anyway. He was really tickled with the results. I was too nauseated by the whole experience. I know, I know. It's all mental. Does anyone else get that way about certain foodstuffs?
Meanwhile, I'm learning to LOVE the Instant Pot.
Besides raw veggies (above) .....
I made back-to-back pots of spaghetti with Italian sausages and froze in individual containers. I'm all about keep-it-simple, and this is easiest thing ever!
To be honest, this is actually the 'real' me.

You know your aversion to certain foods and processes can be real. Look up Oral Sensory Issues- my grandson has it and it is tough to deal with.

DeleteI'm so glad the storm didn't give you any problems. That photo of Tom is priceless lol! I'm glad you were able to go to church but please be very careful Myra! I wouldn't be comfortable with it yet either. I'm so glad you got your air fryer, I can't wait to hear about you adventures with it. I totally get the aversion. I actually have always had an aversion to any raw meat and chicken is the worst. I tried the vegetarian route but nope, didn't work for me lol. I just have to work through my aversion.
ReplyDeleteActually, your recipes played a big role in our decision to buy. It's hardly worth the trouble (and $) to heat up our big oven for just the two of us.
DeleteI love my Instant Pot too. I do all of my cooking in it and our microwave. We get more and more simple as the years go by. 🙂

DeleteI have an Instapot for about a year and haven't used it yet. Seriously, I'm thinking of selling it on Offer Up. Good for you for going to church!!!!!! We've been going in person for 4 weeks (not counting the 2 we had to do online when Winslow was recovering) and I just love being part of corporate worship again. Of course there are masks and social distancing and the like but being in church actually made me cry at times during the worship songs! We have an air fryer too given to us by son; used it once. We are creatures of habit and the Instapot and air fryer aren't in our habits LOL. What is it about dogs and rain? Koda loved the snow but hated the rain. Priceless photo of Tom!! Take care!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. We had lunch/brunch at Cheesecake Factory today. They now take reservations. The family came for dinner and every once in awhile I like to do a fancy dessert from there. Didn't check to see if pumpkin cheesecake was on the menu but the ones they got (I rather drink my calories LOL) were enjoyed :) Thought about you and Tom and our fun times there!

Isn't that funny? I don't think Tom realized Alabama gets so much rain, even in a normal year. I sure miss CF, but I'm not willing to drive almost 80 miles to eat there.

ReplyDeleteI've seen advertisements for the Ninja Foodi and it looks great. You made a good choice (my humble opinion).
I don't have any food hangups - but I remember that my grandfather wouldn't eat chicken. He never forgot how they killed chickens on the farm when he was a child.
Farm kid or not, that's a terrible thing to witness. Pretty sure I'd have grown up to be a vegetarian.

DeleteSo glad that you were spared the wrath of the storm. Now there is Beta out there in the gulf, churning up the waters and rain again. Sure has been an unusual year, 2020. Praying for a calmer, gentler 2021. Love your pictures. So happy you were able to go back to church. We have been back for a couple of months and love being there, masks and all. Just to be together again is so comforting. I haven't tried any of the new instapot thingys yet. I just don't think I need any more kitchen appliances...but you all make it sound so wonderful...I may have to break down and try. I just don't have room for another thing, so I'd have to get rid of something...hmmm, now that IS a dilemma! Have a wonderful day and stay safe and dry.

As Danny is the cook around here, and has yet to mention a Ninja Foodi, I doubt one will be coming into our home any time soon. Glad you are enjoying that (for the most part) and your air-fryer. Props to Danny! Tom used to enjoy preparing big meals - but now he's realized I'm not particularly fond of leftovers. For the time being, simple and quick's the name of the game.

ReplyDeleteAs for aversions to food issues. I have none. We use to live on a farm and we use to ((gasp)) kill our own chickens. It is what it is. Sorry, didn't mean to make you squirmish.

With both the Instant Pot and Air Fryer, must admit I had more than a little apprehension. You sound a bit like my son who, when asked about one of their chickens told me, "We don't name our food."
Deletewell at least this song wurm in my head will replace the one you gave me a week or more ago, which has been there since i saw it here. cheatin heart. can't get rid of it... this is amazing to me.. I can't eat chicken if i cook it. or liver. i struggle with eating meat unless someone else cooks it. chicken is THE worse... that might be due to daddy killing our pets when we were young and wanting us to eat them, or watching my grandmother kill chickens and cook them. what ever I agree it is mental but it still is THERE.

I also smiled a the raw chicken. DAllas, a good friend from Pennsylvania will not touch chicken, eggs or anything related to chickens and he was raised on a farm and was also a farmer. LOL

Wow, I'm so surprised how many people have bad memories associated with chicken. Pretty sure I couldn't ever live on farm. Hope you'll let us know how you enjoy the air fryer; I just threw away the book and have been getting recipes and videos on line.

DeleteI would so love an air fryer. There are a lot of things that you can do with one. Not only for chicken. I don't have an insta pot either, but use my old slow cooker faithfully. Glad you had a good weekend, Hope the new week is a great one too !
ReplyDeleteChristmas is coming, Ma! It's such a struggle to keep our home cool, so basically in the summer months our big oven never gets turned on. Have to admit, when it comes to roasts, the slow cooker's the way to go!

ReplyDeleteI dislike raw chicken, even if we only buy "happy chicken."<---Not raised in cages, like all other chicken are. I pick it up, with a fork, and put it in pan... Never touching it. :-)

That was so many years ago; pretty sure no-one ever considered reporting it. I told my hubby, he's in charge of cooking any more chicken wings.
DeleteGlad you were not hit with the storm. So many weird weather happenings everywhere. Nick went in am ambulance to the ER when he was in college. Undercooked chicken at the cafeteria. His friends got scared and called an ambulance. Boy was he sick. The married kids love the air fryer and the instapot. I have sweet potato fries I hear are great in the air dryer. I better find those fries and try them. Always good to see you here and glad you were able to go to church. It seems this whole pandemic is falling apart at the seams. I just pray and watch the sky for Jesus. Praying you both stay safe when these storms pass. Hugs across the miles XO XO

ReplyDeleteI cannot eat any meat if I have had to clean it and cook it in the same day. Glad you can buy cut meat, and even cooked already in the frozen department.
