So, Terri tells us today is National Sibling Day, and has even included some interesting back stories (read more by clicking right here)!
Ironic, isn't it. In my last post I featured a family with 9 kiddos, and last night I came across my grandmother's old scrapbook devoted to the Dionne quints. I wonder if, like me, she loved multiples?
Imagine!

For a minute, this 'lonely only' thought, "Well, I'm out." But no … our hostess suggested we think outside the box -- substitute an aunt, a cousin, a friend.
That works! Today I'm sharing my own conclusions (*smile*) about Tom and his sister, Annette.
Here are this week's posers ...
How many siblings do you have? Are you rivals or do you support each other in all you do?
Tom has one sister, 7 years younger than he. They're very different, but would go to the wall for one another in a heartbeat.
Have you heard of the Birth Order Book? What are your thoughts on the premise that your birth order affects everything you do in life?
Vaguely yes, I've heard of it.
In this case, the 'Guca kids' throw that premise out on its ear. I've no first-hand knowledge to disprove it - but like astrological profiles, I think people interpret what they want to believe.

Is there something that you still do that drives your siblings crazy?
Despite having recovered from Stage III lung cancer, Tom still smokes (a pipe).
I doubt Annette's ever had a single vice in her life.

Are you closer to your siblings now than you were when you were younger?
(I had to ask him about this one!)
No - neither geographically nor psychologically. Differing life experiences shape different outlooks.
Would you dare to tell us an embarrassing story about a sibling?
Why not?
Tom claims she once threw a pair of scissors at him, and they became embedded in the door.
More recently, she decided to use the pressure washer to take bugs off their new car's grill ... and in so doing, wound up removing some of the paint!

Tell us something random about your week.
Oh man, it's all so ordinary!
Monday and Tuesday we each had doctor appointments. Prior to deciding whether or not to do surgery, Tom's doctor gave him two steroidal injections. Wouldn't you know, it seems Tom's one of the 10% to experience significant pain and swelling. (*sigh*)
I get a kick out of sitting in the waiting room, listening to old men in insignia-laden baseball caps swap stories. Yesterday I was seated next to a former Seal Team member ..... good looking, oh my!
Since we no longer have a land-line, I finally broke down and traded my Samsung Galaxy 8 for a Google Pixel. Sad. I seriously loved my Galaxy, but grew tired of people going, "What? What'd you say? I can only hear every other word." Supposedly, the Pixel has a superior camera, which -- let's face it -- is the most important feature for me.
Like so many organizations, we were disappointed to see Verizon has gone the way of everything ala-carte and self-serve. And talk about hard sell! For a minute, I thought I was back in Phoenix working for a time share. HA!
To take away the sting, Tom asked if I'd like to try a new (to us) BBQ joint down the road. That's akin to asking our girls if they'd like a Greenie!
Now, I never order salad. Not the water part, but this is so me!
But I spotted one served to a nearby table, piled high with pulled pork and had to try it. Sooo good, and best of all, they're not stingy with their portions.
THIS. This is my idea of 'fine dining'!
Hungry, yet? Me, too!
I'm going to grab a bite to eat and go meet Pastor Janet's hubby. They've asked if I might lend a hand each week ... but being I'm totally unfamiliar with the software program, the best I could offer was, "We'll see." This dog may well be too old to learn new tricks. Wish me luck?

this is my kind of dining also, but I would have the pork on bread. I for one am wondering just why you think sitting next to a navy seal, ex or not is ordinary. I mean really? I may have talked him to death, proably the only way to kill a seal. ha ha.. I enjoyed the sibling story. I regret it I could have answered on another post about my SIL, don't have much to say about my one brother. have not seen him since 2008. thanks for letting me know why people are always saying the same thing to me on the RARE occasion I use my cell for talking. mine is a galaxy and also it is TracFone, I thought it was the provider but it might be the phone OR both
ReplyDeleteKill a seal? Hahaha! He was actually talking to another vet; me, eavesdropping. No shame!
DeleteOh yum! When I was working in Kansas City I was so spoiled with good BBQ! Those find dining places were everywhere!! I can't find decent BBQ anywhere now that I am home! i AM SOOOOO SAD - I MISS BBQ!
ReplyDeleteGosh, some entrepreneurial person should open such a place ... I wonder if it wouldn't be a hit.
DeletePraying for your husband's good health.
ReplyDeleteThe restaurant you describe sounds so appealing. Pity we don't have branches over here.
God bless.
Thank you so much, Victor.
DeleteI love me some good BBQ, Myra! And salad? I like that, too. Just call me hungry after reading this.
ReplyDeleteHope Tom gets to feeling better, and that his upcoming surgery will be a breeze!
Blessings!
Thanks! Cross fingers, these injections will do the trick and surgery won't be necessary.
DeleteI haven't had any good BBQ since I was in St Louis this time last year. Have a great Wednesday!
ReplyDelete.. and here, I thought Texas had the best BBQ. Love all the regional favorites.
DeleteLove the photos of Tom and his sister. I think birth order can make a difference but it's not a bad thing. It just is! I didn't know that about Tom. What a blessing from God to heal him from lung cancer. Those are some funny embarrassing stories.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely a blessing; a miracle, I think.
DeleteI had 3 brothers and 1 sister, with me being the middle child, who worked beside my mom in all things. As we grew up, the brothers were total mean bastards. Now 2 of them are dead.
ReplyDeleteBBQ is another one of the Food of the Gods. Growing up on a hog farm, living near Kewanee, IL, the pork capital of the world, well, BBQ was a staple.
I have boneless pork ribs ready for the slow cooker tomorrow.
I didn't know that about Kewanee, Illinois! Must ask my hubby, who grew up in Chicago.
DeleteGood luck and keep us posted! I enjoyed learning about Tom and his sister! Thanks for joining in and thinking 'outside the box'!! We both like the same kind of fine dining places!!
ReplyDeleteI will … thank you, Terri!
DeleteI'd be all day if I answered and said 'I smiled' when you asked/said..etc. I threw a pair os scissors at my sister once! ouch. But most of the time Shirley and I got along well. I am the last of the family. They are all gone. Shirley and I were the 'Uh oh family of mom and dad' in their late 30s.
ReplyDeleteShirley and I became close in our last years together.
YOu always fine a 'THINKER' to put on and I love it.
Sherry & jack
The 'uh-oh' family … I love that! I know you must miss Shir something fierce.
DeleteWishing you luck with the computer software. It might not have been quite as bad as you thought. I think some are user friendlier over others.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading a book called Quintland It was a fictional account of the " Dionne Quints. It was interesting. Felt so sorry for them reading about the rest of their lives when they were reunited with their family. My mom had a silver platter that had all their names and pictures engraved in them.
I have a sister and a brother, I'm the youngest, my brother is in the middle. I had heard of that book about the birth order but hadn't read it yet. I was a bit spoiled growing up.
My siblings are in Washington, DC and California respectively. I'm sort on the outs with them at this time, my doing based on something I perceived they didn't or did do.
Do like the picture of Tom and his sister.
That food you had sounded delicious!
Glad you upgraded your phone, sometimes it is a necessary evil.
betty
It really wasn't as bad as I feared! I'd not head of Quintland, but it sounds interesting, for sure. Yes, their early years were pretty tragic. I can't even wrap my mind around that happening today.
DeleteWhen I was a child, I always yearned to have siblings and thought that their existence would enhance my life. I'm wondering if you ever had similar feelings.
ReplyDeleteI was often assured - by other kids - that I was very lucky to be an only child. Since then, I have heard so many first-hand horror stories about sibling hatred and rivalry that I'm glad I never had to endure it.
Yes, I did. All the time, Jon. My parents weren't rich by any means, but spoiled me rotten. I wouldn't have had many of the experiences (I enjoyed) if they'd had other children.
DeleteNice to hear about Tom and his sister and to see the before and after pictures too. Family members do share a lot of history. I have read about birth orders and have a middle son that fits the middle child syndrome to a tee. He was stuck in the middle of 3 oder and 3 younger siblings. Not an all together a bad thing at all. I'm like you and would not favor a salad over good BBQ sandwich. Salads are ok as a side but not the main dish for sure. Good luck with the software adventures. Happy Thursday!
ReplyDeleteLove and Hugs,
'ma'
I'm honestly fascinated by your family, Ma. And best, you all seem to genuinely LIKE one another! :)
DeleteIt's good to know that you have no problems with trying new things. I am pretty much stuck in a rut here! And my siblings....oh another story!
ReplyDeleteHa! I've problems all right, but was too shy to say 'no.'
DeleteI was blessed with four older siblings, my sister Pat ( 16 years older than me) was the oldest, and wisest. She passed away in February 2001. Cancer, dirty, rotten life stealing cancer from working in a men's pant factory. My brother Bill ( 14 years older than me) is a retired school teacher. He has always been the storyteller. He looks good along with his wife for their age over 80! My brother Ed is a retired structural engineer. My hubby would often see him blowing up buildings downtown when he was working. HaHaHa! Old buildings getting a new lease on life and if you ever travel through the Denver International Airport, know this. My big brother helped build that airport. Nick had a college roomie from Ireland. He came to visit with us on Spring break one year. He didn't like the skylight. I said you have insulted my brother! I love telling that story. He also designed a jail in Washington state and a community college, one of his first projects in Colorado Springs, CO. He was black balled at one point in his career for refusing to cover up shoddy foundations on a big projects in the mountains when the big condo boom was on! He was certainly our brother! Raised right with honesty and ethics. My sister Mary is 5 years older than me. I am closest to her, she and I love baseball. We share our disappointments and our joys over our Colo Rockies and the Yankees. SHe and I are on total opposite ends of the political spectrum so I cut her off when she tried to engage me. I say, three words sis, Read Your Bible! All the answers are there. My daily life is a merry go round of cats and dogs and puppies. AT 5 o'clock I yell I am off the clock. HUGS xo
ReplyDeleteI love Tom's photos. Very sweet! I do love Dr. Kevin Lehman who wrote the books on you are the way you are because of the birth order. In my phamily, it was so very true and with our kids and the hubs phamily too. Avery and Rebekah are identical like twins! Because they were both the middle child. I survived raising five kids with my hubby simply because of guys like Kevin Lehman and James Dobson. My gf Chris often says her mom always said, I would be in prison for murder if those guys were not there helping me along when she was a single parent raising mild mammered CHris and her youngest wild sister Tamara. LOL
ReplyDeleteWe passed April 10 however I want to write something about my sbling.
ReplyDeleteThanks...
You've revived so many memories. I have a sister who is 18 months younger than I and we have a long-standing rivalry. Our youngest sister says that when we're together it's like a competition of who is right. My youngest sibs are twins and our very youngest brother died a couple years ago which is sad.
ReplyDeleteSo many stories I could tell!
