What to do with my parent's collection of ashtrays.
Somewhere in that box is an old newspaper article my mother clipped about vintage ashtrays being worth money.
I'm hoping something will occur to me to re-purpose a few here and there.
Any ideas are most welcome!

Foolish. While trying to keep pace with Pastor Janet on the walking trail, I think I gave myself shin splints. (SMH)
What's in the Kitchen
Eggs, sharp Cheddar, eggs, chicken, eggs, Conecuh sausage, eggs. After 4 months of reckless consumption, it's high time I climb back aboard the keto train.
Tom's being accepted for medical benefits by the V.A.! I wouldn't have put money on it, but in the words of my son, "Have patience and don't take 'no' for an answer." Tom's photo I.D. just arrived in the mail and we've an audiology appointment next week!
Out my Window
It's a beautiful sunny day ... mid-90's and high(ish) humidity. I get so tickled when our weather folks go exclaiming how hot it is. People don't know what HEAT is until they've lived through summer in Phoenix … right, Betty? :)

Careful ... those ashtrays may be very valuable. Especially the one with the Queen. Don't say they're ashtrays because now smoking is not fashionable and it may lower their value. They are side plates. Or ornamental plates. They don't look like ashtrays because they don't have the indent to rest a cigarette on. Check on any markings on the back - words like Royal Doulton for example, or Staffordshire Potteries, or Poole Potteries if they plates originate from England (your first photo).

The second plate is marked Victoria BC. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia in Canada. Does the plate originate there? It commemorates the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on 2 June 1953.

It was fun to read your currentlies (auto correct tells me that isn't a real word, but....pffffft!). Hooray, for Tom's good news! Do you have a little wall or something outside that you could maybe put the ashtrays on...sort of like tiles or mosaics?

ReplyDeleteI have my dad's ashtray. I use it for paper clips. It advertises a mortuary. It's quite heavy. I also have two crystal ashtrays that were mine. I don't think I have seen an ashtray in a store for years. I will keep mine. Doubt they are worth anything. But you never know if I will start to smoke again. LOL!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me our summer in Alabama has been much milder this year. Not so much the temperature as generally lower humidity. Certainly not as miserable as it sometimes gets. I have never experienced Phoenix heat.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting with the ashtrays. I'm sure they were quite popular to collect "in the day." Great news that Tom got his VA benefits, it shouldn't have been a struggle to get them, know what I mean? I always find it funny here how the weather people go on about the heat (and not just when they are giving a heat advisory, but when they are saying "boy it was hot out today.") I'm thinking we live in a desert and its summer, of course it is going to be hot :) We're going to DC area around Labor Day. I think I mentioned before, I'm already dreading the plane and the humidity :) (not sure which order I'm dreading the most :)

I am staggering in awe over Victor's insight into your ashtrays. There's nothing I can say to top his observations, and nothing I can add to his ashtray knowledge.

I was merely going to suggest that you keep the ashtray collection and don't make any rash decisions about discarding them.
Perhaps someday you'll take up smoking again....

before I read the rest of your post, I searched ebay for vintage ash trays, now I suggest you get the value of yours... other than that no suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI looked at the library for A killer mind, not there but it sure sounds like the kind I like most. when I was younger I always played loud music, now I prefer quiet... Yay for VA ID card. so happy for both of you.... also happy you are happy with your NOW life. so am I.
That is wonderful about the medical benefits from the VA. I know how valuable that can be as my BIL receives them. Interesting how valuable those old ash trays may be. I have several here that I use for coasters. Works great. They used to be every where and for all occasions. A lot of souvenirs were in the form of an ashtray. I even have one that was given to me as an anniversary gift. Not sure which one. Take care with that walking, a slower pace may be required. Shine splints are not pleasant. One of my sons got them from bicycling. Eggs and chicken are really good sources of protein and not bad in your diet at all at least to my way of thinking. Glad you are enjoying the 90's. Here I tend to suffer when our temps get that high. Hope you continue to love summer days...it's not long at all till fall is here. Happy Tuesday !
ReplyDeleteAmazing,the collection. to quote a well known German Guard at the POW camp, "I know nothing" about antique values (other than me the antique!) I am glad the VA finally saw the light. I never will forget how long it took to get their attention, but life has been better since me 'n the VA became friends.

ReplyDeleteGosh, I forget to play music most of the time yet I love music. I love the ashtrays. I have a few myself! Me too, getting back to eating low carb/keto. I'm glad Tom has been approved for V.A. benefits.
