Good morning from foggy central 'Bama!
In a post that should surprise no-one:
"Alabama is not experiencing any drought conditions right now. Signed, Captain Obvious"
(Who says meteorologists don't have a sense of humor?)

Never mind how profound or weighty ..... if a Facebook post takes more space than a few sentences, it's less likely to be acknowledged?

At the grocery store.
When was the last time you made a goof at the supermarket?Maybe (like me), it was buying an 'off brand' to save 20-cents. Or, the time I mistook plantains for bananas.
Then, there's Tom. Standing in the kitchen with a puzzled look on his face, holding his just opened bakery container, "Didn't we just buy these (chocolates) yesterday? Here, touch."
What he thought were brownies? Biscotti.
(Nope, he'd never heard of it.)

Oh, that belly laugh felt good!

Finally, my thoughts on The Women.
Like one reviewer shared, this may be one of the most powerful books I've ever read.
Historical fiction isn't something I'm drawn to. In fact, I was expecting to lob it back to the library at the first horrific detail.

So much more than what I presumed! It's the story of Frankie, Ethel, Barb -- US Army Corp nurses in Viet Nam. The debutant good girl, the farm girl, the radical.
"Back in the world they might have never met, might never have become friends. This war had made them sisters."

Not only wartime, it was the book's second half -- the coming home -- that gutted me.
I agree with one reviewer who said,
I've never had a book make me ugly cry on one page and then laugh immediately after."

I can't recall the last time I gave a book "5 stars" ... but ya. I just did.

DeleteThose moments of gratification mean a lot to me. It's good to give thanks for what we have. Gratitude always makes me feel good! I'm sorry to say, we do have a drought here. Not enough water to go around due to lack of rain. We do have more sunny days than where I used to live and I am grateful for that too. It is very nice blogger lets us share our thoughts. Deletestill laughing at the biscotti goof. I make lots of goofs but can't remember one and I find that now that I am having my groceries delivered from Walmart I still make goofs. I bought the wrong brand of swirl raisin bread for bob, and it was not the one I buy in the store, pepperidge is what I got and just not the same as the other and I still don't know what it is. so who is the goof.
ReplyDeleteI have many times started to read a new book and after the first few pages, turned it back in because I did not like the first part. who knows maybe I missed out. I only read 5 star books, other might not give them 5, but if I start a book and can put it down and don't care if I go back, I stopped reading and get one that I can't put down. anything I can't stop reading gets 5 stars.
Good philosophy! In part, that's the reason I unsubscribed from Kindle Unlimited. Free or not, life's short and books are many!

ReplyDeleteI’m no longer on Facebook because it seems to bring out the “stupid” in people and I allowed it to consume me. It was fun when it first came on the scene and I did find my long lost half brother on Facebook. (Him and his family in Cullman Alabama)
Yep. Stupid ... and angry. I had to filter my feed to only allow posts from my friends and relatives.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that these days on social media people want quick sound-bites and slogans and have no time to read something requiring an ounce of intelligence. That's because they rely on Artificial Intelligence and have a very short attention span and cannot remember what ... ... ... what was I saying? I lost track of my train of thought. It called in at the wrong station and I left without a ticket.
My last goof at the supermarket. I got closer to a woman standing in front of me and said "Hello - nice to see you" and gave her a big hug. She was surprised. I mistook her for someone else. My wife gave me the silent treatment and told the woman "it is my age!" Why do some women look the same?
I have a good way to predict the weather. I tied a piece of string to the tree next to my window. If it moves there's a breeze. If it's wet it is raining. If it's horizontal there's a gale. If it's stiff it's freezing. If it is not longer there I'm thankful the tornado has not blown me away with it.

DeleteI have to say that I miss the old Facebook when it was just family stuff. Everything is AI pictures or videos to watch. I'm sure I've made many mistakes at the store. How do plantains taste? I'm glad you liked the book you read. Hope you enjoy your weekend.

Now that you mention it, I have noticed that FB readers do not reply well to longer post. And goodness, I did have to laugh about the grocery store dilemmas..Happens all the time around here. How funny that the chocolates were brownies..both are pretty good though. This book sounds very touching...Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

ReplyDeleteKelly and I had a lemonade drink, and we were in line to purchase it (it was carbonated).
Somehow it shot off the seat of the cart and down through where the legs go. When it hit the floor, it exploded like a bomb. Glass flew everywhere. I thought someone was shot. It took forever to clean up.
Actually, it was Tom who didn't know what a biscotti is. Now he'll never forget (lol) ... kinda like your and Kelly's lemonade!

ReplyDeleteThe biscotti "goof" made me giggle too! Most of my goofs are made at Amazon these days. The most recent one was I ordered a big box of what I thought was Coconut Flour for baking, frying, etc. Well guess what dum dum here ordered? Coconut Flakes Flour. 🤣 (Quit laughing) Yeah, it's different. One of the nice real Know Who To Cook ladies at Church told me today that's OK. It'll work like the regular flour just add an extra egg. WHEW! Next time though .... 🤣🤣

DeleteI am very limited on Facebook these days...I leave my special things for blogging, and mostly just share positive memes and my NYT games results and some family pictures when it seems appropriate. I don't like the drama and the political mumbo jumbo. I just have to bite my tongue and look the other way. I have too many folks (extended family) on the "other side" of the aisle, so in order to keep peace in the family, I just smile and go on. I'm trying to remember a mistake at the grocery store lately. Not so much my mistakes, but I've been frustrated by the quality of some things that I used to buy that no longer seem the same or I've actually had to write the company and complain about. Then of course they will send you a coupon for cents off or a free one of the same or similar item, and I don't really want the same or similar item the way it is now. I want them to FIX it! LOL. I think we are starting to get some of your rainy weather. We had quite the thunderstorm this afternoon, and LOTS of rain all at once, and Still Waters Pond is starting to look like a pond again instead of a desert with dying lily pads. Even the duck was happy. Well, I've enjoy our visit, and I thank you for writing the way you do. It inspires me to write volumes back to you. LOL Have a lovely week. Oh, the book, I almost forgot. I'm still not sure I want to read it, but is sounds better than when you first mentioned it. I may look it over if it is at our library. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou just hit the proverbial nail on the head, Pam. It's like what my former boss used to do when a guest would complain -- send them a free night's stay or other comp. A couple years ago I wrote what I believed was a polite "e" expressing my disappointment (food and service) and in return a form letter 'apology' with a coupon good for one free desert with purchase of meal. No thank you!
