G'morning, Joyce! Hi there, Hodgepodgers! Shall we?
Monday was National Apple Day... did you eat an apple or enjoy something made with apples on Monday? Do you like apples? Do you prefer your apples raw, baked, or in cider? Do you have a favorite variety of apple?
I'm not fond of apples in any form.
Do you think there's any truth to the saying, 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'? Of the following healthy habits, which do you find easiest to incorporate into your life and which is the most difficult for you to adopt: adequate sleep a balanced diet, plenty of water, eat breakfast, don't smoke, exercise, limit alcohol, include fruits and vegetable in your diet, manage stress, limit screen time."
Easiest? I usually get 5-6 hours of sleep each night, plus a mid-afternoon bonus nap.
Most difficult would be a tie between fruit in my diet or limited screen time.
(Manage stress? Hahahahaha!)
Who taught you to drive? Do you enjoy driving? Would you rather be the driver or the passenger? Do you have a favorite scenic drive near you?
On his rare Sunday afternoons 'off', my dad used to take me up to the deserted Lab parking lot to practice. Driver's Ed came later.
Unless it involves driving after dark, I'd rather be behind the wheel.
I'm not familiar with any scenic drives just yet -- but that sounds like a splendid idea!
What small habit has had a big impact on your life?
I've two, actually. May I have two?
First (ca 1972)
I so wanted a job as a teller at First National Bank, in part because they wore the snazziest matching jackets. (Remember when?)
Later I learned the reason I wasn't hired was because I couldn't/didn't make eye contact with the interviewer.
Lesson learned! No matter how shy you are, suck it up and look him/her in the eye!
Second
When I began work in hospitality, part of the organization's culture was something called the 10/5 Rule.
"Whenever you're within 10' of someone (guest) make eye contact and smile.
At 5', acknowledge them with a "Good morning/afternoon" or friendly, "Hello."
Now in civilian life I still smile at strangers. As my sweet mother used to say, "It doesn't cost a thing."
Tell us about something nice that happened to you recently.
After Tom's doctor appointment Monday, he offered to take me to lunch at LongHorn. It wasn't long after consuming a 10 oz. salmon (with double broccoli), I fell into a two-hour food coma.
Insert your own random thought here.
Speaking of sleep!
Can any other paw-rents relate?
This afternoon we're to take the girls to the vet's where they'll spend the night before having their teeth cleaned (under anesthesia).

Oh my, I love apples and yes, they are very healthy for you. that's why they keep the doctor away. I love apple pie, applesauce and apple butter. My mom used to make the best apple butter and after her death my oldest son requested the recipe. He started a family tradition of making it every fall. Another son of mine took me to an apple butter festival one year, where they made it in big pots over an open fire. We took a scenic drive here along the Guadalupe River. It was shady and beautiful and a lot of people were camping along the riverside. I have a lot of nice things done for me all the time. My daughter washes my dirty clothing every week and all I have to do is put it away or hang it up in the closet. She also cooks and fixes our dinner every night after working all day. I'm am quite spoiled. My favorite color is red so I enjoyed your post today. Thanks, Love, ma
ReplyDeleteI've only tried apple butter once (in Pennsylvania) ... very tasty! Making it from your mother's recipe is a great family tradition. I love how your daughter spoils you ... you deserve it!
DeleteKeep us posted about your sweet babies!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Terri ... I will!
DeleteHope your pups do well. Our dog had to have some suspicious something removed from his back so since they had to give him anesthesia we opted to have his teeth cleaned too. He honestly has the whitest teeth of any dog I've known. Not sure if that's a breed feature? Anyway, the dental cleaning was more than the surgery and biopsy, but he did well. Hope yours do the same!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI am not a fan of apples and if I do eat one, I must have salt on it...which is not good. I love your story on wanting the bank job and the jackets. lol.. We love Longhorn and I am always tooo full when I leave that place. Hope your babies do well...
ReplyDeleteI remember my mother putting salt on her apple, too!
DeleteMyra, I just love your style of writing and that fabulous sense of humor you have. Its always fun to come here and see what's going on.
ReplyDeleteLets see if I can answer some of these things on the HodgePodge.
I do like apples but they aren't my favorite. I have apples that are going to be mush if I don't make a pie out of them soon. Trouble they aren't on my diet but knowing me, I will cheat and consume some of it.
My driving came from Drivers Ed and my Mom. I hated drivers ed due to the horrible instructor I had. He made me so nervous I did stupid things while learning. In fact I didn't get my license until my senior year of high school. The fear was so engrained in me. I overcame it when my folks got me a cute little Nash Rambler and needed to drive to my part time job.
Love your customer service story. Eye contact is so, so important. You can tell a lot about a person by looking into their eyes. They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul.
Hope your babies will be ok from their "adventure" and you, Mama, will be ok too.
Sue
Well, phooey on that cranky instructor! I'm so sorry his words/actions made you fearful. My first car was a Rambler, too!
DeleteSorry you don't like apples. I don't eat them often. I usually have a banana each day. It seems hard to limit our screen time these days. I don't mind driving but will not drive at night. That is very interesting about the eye contact which I am sure is important in that job. I do smile at people and I seem to talk to them too. Now, that was a great meal you ate! Hope all goes well with the girls at the vet.
ReplyDeleteIt's my favorite! I love broccoli so much and they prepare it perfectly 'al dente.'
DeleteI liked your answers, Mevely. Like you, I like a nap when I can. The worst part is waking up and finding I missed the exit on the highway; and I have to drive miles further to get back.
ReplyDeleteI sympathise with you; I remember when they had to put our dog to sleep for dental work. As soon as he woke up he started barking because he was disoriented. All the way driving back home he kept asking "Who are you?"
God bless always my friend.
Poor babies don't understand. I'm glad he's got you.
DeletePoor little babies having to spend the night at the vets! I hear your concern, Myra, that's for sure. I love apples and I love broccoli, too, especially the way Danny prepares it. My dad was the one who taught me to drive. I no longer enjoy driving and refuse to drive at night. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteNow I know what my dear mother meant when she'd say, "Everything looks different at night."
DeleteHope all goes well with the teeth cleaning and waking up!! It gets harder and harder to drive at night. I enjoyed your two stories about small habits!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen!
DeleteYou don't like apples? I can take or leave them, but they are so good for you.
ReplyDeleteI like fruit. Probably the sugar.
So, you learned to smile - for some reason so do I and you can never give one away without getting one back.
We are going to Long Horn Saturday night - was the salmon really good? Think I will try it.
Good luck to the pups having their teeth cleaned.
Please let me know!
DeleteI rarely go to Longhorn Steakhouse, but I love a good meal at Texas Roadhouse. It can be quite healthy if I can stay away from the rolls and sweet butter.
ReplyDeleteThey just built a Texas Roadhouse nearby, but we've not tried it yet.
DeleteI smile all the time - always have and have the wrinkles to prove it!
ReplyDeleteI do hope your girls are fine and come out of the anesthesia with no issues. And yes, as a paw-rent to one black lab who sleeps with us, they do take over the bed. I also have the cat who also joins us by sleeping on top of my feet.
I don’t enjoy apples like I used to -
Aw, I love paw-rents who share their beds.
DeleteFingers crossed the vet visit goes well. ❤️
ReplyDelete❤️
DeletePlease keep us posted on the vet visit! I hope it goes well!! I love your two habits - they are excellent!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
