Do you have a word for the year (WOTY)? If so, and you'd like to share, please share. How do you decided on a word? If you don't have a word, are you still on the hunt for one for 2024?
I haven't participated in the last several years and wasn't planning to do so again.
Then, it found me.
Present, that is.
I want to be Present.
Some may remember, I've a PhD in "what if-ing."
Being a weather-specific eater, right now I'd love a slice of egg custard.
Come July or August, however, it's gotta be Key Lime.
Tipping. What are your thoughts, expectations, as to who, when and where? Do you appreciate a store/restaurant giving a 'suggested amount'? Have you ever left an extravagant tip?
Even when it's less than stellar service -- rude, perhaps -- I can't bring myself to 'stiff' the server.
I mean, who knows what sort of day he/she's having?
Yes, I appreciate when a restaurant provides suggested guidelines. Smiling to remember the little laminated cards my mother and her friends used to carry. Like this,

Influencers on social media are people who've built a reputation for their knowledge and expertise on a particular subject. Do you follow any influencers online? Have you made a purchase or tried something new because of that 'influence'? If there's one you particularly enjoy, tell us who they are and why you enjoy them.
Nope, I'm not a follower.
I'm more inclined to buy something on the recommendation of a friend or blogger v. a professional pretty face.

I really should leave this alone ... but.
This morning the cheerful young woman who brought our WM order to the truck was calling Tom, "love."
We both got a kick out of that.
It made me think of the commenter on my last post. "Anonymous" reported once taking Offense at her server's 'terms of endearment.'
"I called a waitress out on it after about the tenth 'baby'."
Interesting.
... I wondered, Did the server apologize? Did she cry?
How did that make you feel?
I'm not nearly as thin-skinned as I once was -- but there's little that offends me these days. Well, except for the blogger who admitted (she believes) those who live in Alabama are less 'intellectually inclined' than the rest of the nation. (Bless her heart!)
Taking a page from my son, I try and find humor wherever I can. Like the former co-worker who remarked, "This place is like a Shakespearean play. I just don't know if it's a comedy or a tragedy."
I did celebrate pie day but not with a pie. I had some leftover cheese cake which I cut into pie shaped wedges. I tip whenever eating out, I use the standard 20 per cent method. I've even left tips in a tip jar at a carryout food place. If someone is pleasant and customer friendly, they deserve it.
ReplyDeleteAs for influencers, I don't have any one special but have gotten a lot of tips from fellow bloggers that I have tried, because they recommended them. I love your word for the new year. We should all live in the present. Life is such a gift! Love, ma

DeleteI can't believe I have just found one thing in my house that is not on my blog. I just checked. I keep my earrings in styrofoam egg cartons, just like my mother did. when she died she left several drawers full of egg cartons full of earings. I only have one egg carton because I rarely wear them since i got so old my ears got bigger, and one is higher than the other and when I look in the mirror I see that one is much higher. no matter how many times I tell myself people only see one side or the other at a time, my wrinkles are not made more prominent by dangling earrings, it does make people notice how big my ears are, and I put them on and take them off. I have to say I do have somewhere on the blog a post about EARS GROW OUR ENTIRE LIFE.. take note of 100 year old people, tell me what you see
ReplyDeleteno influencers for me.. the only ads I watch are the ones with dogs/cats or if it a new techie thing to see what they have invented now that i might long for.... 1 egg carton post coming soon to a blog near you.
Now I'm going to have to look closer at the 'old' folks at church, lol! Maybe our heads shrink as we age and the ears stay the same?

DeleteMy PhD is in getting wrapped around the axle, especially over absolutely nothing that never will happen anyway! Why do I do that!? It shows a distinct lack of trust in Jesus when I do. My bad. I'm working on that.

DeleteI always tip at least 20% unless the service is abyssmal, Myra. And these days, we can't afford to be easily offended. John Rich has a great song about being offended on YouTube if you want to check it out.

DeleteI'd like to be offended. I can't think of something that really offends me. Usually bad language on TV or anti-Christian jokes can be offensive but I turn to another channel before they finish the sentence. Or mute them whilst searching for something else on TV.
ReplyDeleteI tried to tip and assistant in a hardware store who lifted heavy items and wheeled them all the way to the car and put them in the boot. He refused and said it was against company policy and he'd lose his job if he accepted any money.

DeleteGood luck on your WOTY. It's an excellent choice. I hate it when people, especially those who are basically strangers and especially men, call me "Dear", "Sweetie", etc. Then again, I no longer explain why (I think) it's oppressive.

ReplyDeleteWe usually tip over 20%, even at Subway. But we haven't even been using that lately. I don't have a WOTY, but I use the word empoderamieto a lot. That's Spanish for empowerment. It reminds me not to throw away my personal power by getting frustrated/annoyed by little things.

DeleteI can't say I like egg custard pie - but I do like key lime - my favorite would be pecan or pumpkin.
ReplyDeleteI try to always leave a tip of 18%-20%. If they are really bad I tip less - I don't stiff either. You are right sometimes I'd like to tip more but can't.
I don't wear earrings either.
And influencers - that really is getting to be a big thing now - but I don't watch them.
I used to love pecan, but it's far too sweet for me, anymore. I eat a slice and need a nap, lol!
DeleteWow someone actually said that about the people of Alabama? How rude. My late brothers family live in Cullman Alabama area and I've found the people there to be genuine and warm.
ReplyDeletePeople don't say that here - of course this is California, the headquaters for the Politically Correct. They would get themselves into a lawsuit or something calling someone "sweetie". I'm told that servers etc want you to address them with their proper gender pronoun. Its crazy. So far, at least where I live it hasn't come to that here...yet. It you make a stink about it, you wind up on the news.

DeleteI think Southerners in general are often accused of that. It's so ignorant and really says more about the speaker's intelligence than anything else. It's getting hard to find people who aren't easily offended. I feel like we all need to lighten up if we're going to get through what I'm sure will be a tumultuous election year. DeleteOh, I missed PIE Day!! Wow! Now I wish I had some pie, but I really don't need it and can't eat much pie anymore. Just too sweet for me. Tipping...I usually make sure they get a decent tip. Hubby isn't as generous as I am, so I often am the one doing the tipping, except unless he's paying the bill. There have been a few who did not deserve a tip, but unless they deliberately neglected our table, etc., I still usually leave something, maybe just not as much as they might hope for. I don't get along well with people who are too thin-skinned. Life is just too short to be in a snit over stuff all the time. I like what Chuck Swindoll said in a sermon once time, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and remember, it's all small stuff!" So that's my thought for the day. LOL. Life is just too short to carry a chip on our shoulders about anything or anyone. Keep a short list...forgive and forget as quickly as possible!

ReplyDeleteMy nephews daughter Chelsea who came to visit us years ago . She was adopted out because the parents already had a child and were duh legally married. Anyway she made a crack about how stupid people in Mississippi were. I could not even answer her ignorance. I quietly deleted her from my life. Plus her political rantings. I finally found a pastor who said in one of his sermons, I don't trouble myself with this world. That is God's job. I just want to be there when Jesus returns and try to get as many people to trust in Him before He returns. Everyone everywhere spews hate. I heard RFK Jr state that neither President Trump or the guy in the WH now did anything to save our country. He said I traveled our beautiful land and there is no prosperity. I don't know, he might be more like Uncle Teddy ...neither Trump or the other guy (my words not his) did a thing to make this country better. Open borders, closed borders hmmmm.... yes let us circle the planets and land on Mars and live there. Someone following RFK Jr. actually said that out loud. So I try to keep my head out of that cesspool . I grew up having to work in politics when I was a wide eyed innocent kid of 18 years old. Nope not for me. I have a T Shirt that says Normal isn't coming back, JESUS is! It is the gospel truth. Sorry I get off track but ignorance and politics kind of go hand in hand and I steer away if I can.
