The Week that Was

Happy Week Before, ho-ho-ho!

So our company arrived Thursday afternoon -- from Arizona and North Carolina.

Before I yak about that, I wanted to show y'all what (I think's) the great thing since sliced bread!

Anyone who's ever experienced sub-zero chilly conditions while clad in a skimpy shapeless gown should appreciate this.

"Are you cold?"  This, from the nurse monitor.   (Is the Pope Catholic?)

Lickedly split, she pulled out a shiny sheet --reminiscent of mats on which I used to sunbathe.  She affixed a length of hosing, hit a switch and the 'sheet' began to fill with sweet warm air.  Aaaaah!

Another orderly remarked, "You know, it wouldn't be that hard to make one of these."
What my cold-blooded hubby wouldn't give for one of these!

Anyway.  Back to pre-Christmas with Tom's sis and son.  In all honesty, I enjoy them ... but in small measure.

This is the part I agree with Agatha Christie: "It's astonishing in this world how things don't turn out at all the way you expect them to."   We actually had a good time, enjoying good conversation.  I didn't even have to strong-arm Tommy into taking a look at what ails my conputer.

After travelling all day Thursday I thought they might like to lay low.  Tom had a Christmas concert rehearsal so I kept it simple -- homemade potato soup, cold cuts and parmesan garlic pretzel sticks.

It's been a long time since we had overnight guests -- much less felt it necessary to entertain.  Nevertheless, Friday we drove over to Wetumpka for good food and window shopping.

Best ever "Cowboy burger"!   Tommy discovered how delicious shrimp and grits really are.  (I think he regretted having ordered a boring meatloaf.)

They'd begun decorating for a Dickens street festival ... and this signage still cracked me up:  "Scrooge and Marley, Accountants.")

Friday we paid homage to Prattville's picturesque old cotton mill ...

... then onto our favorite smoked BBQ spot for hickory-smoked brisket, ribs, camp stew and fried okra.

Next on the tour, a popular 'Pickers' emporium featuring lots of stuff I'd like -- but little I need.

This permanent resident totally reminds me of my late Aunt Adele.
She's caused me to do a double take on more than one occasion!

Granted, I learned to type on a manual typewriter -- but this slightly predates those at LAHS.

Annette and I splurged on cups of specialty coffee (aka, liquid dessert).  |
This is a "Snowball" -- white chocolate and coconut mocha.

I've not weighed myself in days but suspect this may well turn true.
Such is the state of my stomach!

I was going to do a Mississippi Pot Roast for Sunday dinner but wound up brewing a breakfast casserole in the slow cooker.
... Which no-one really felt like eating.

Concerned about the incoming storms, Annette and Tommy left early for Atlanta.  I think Tom was a bit disappointed they didn't stay for his Christmas concert/sing-along, but it was still well-attended.

My biggest joy was falling into a freshly-made bed of my very own last night.  Another night on a rickety day bed and I might have become a certified cripple.  (*whine*)

Tom has two out-of-town doctor appointments yet this week, but I'm enjoying the peace only an empty house brings.

Oh!  One more thing!
Normally, Christmas week at ladies Bible study includes gift exchanges ... even random covered dishes.  Desserts.

This year however, I was surprised to see nothing.  Since not everyone was in attendance, I've one left-over book.  (Yes, I've used excerpts from this in several 'Watercooler' posts.)

If anyone would like to have it, please say so in a comment and I'll draw a name by week's end.
Sound good?
Thanks!

Hugs, Myra

  1. My word, you were so busy. Glad you enjoyed your company. Company is never easy! Looks like you did some fun things and ate some great meals. I hope Tom's appointments go well. I have two doctors appointments tomorrow. The never ending story, right?

  2. I know what you mean by having overnight guests at our age. My son arrives Wed for the holidays and I always give him my bed. I prefer it that way since the single bed is in my office and that's where my computer is. Can't do without that computer. hehe

  3. It's always good to have family or friends visiting; but it doesn't half keep you busy.

I really like that inflatable blanket idea. I wonder if it's available for sale together with the contraption that blows hot air.

    Did you record Tom's concert?

Praying for you all. God bless.

  4. Sounds like a fun time with family doing things you probably don't get to do when you don't have company. Oh, that mattress/warmer/thingy sounds wonderful. Kind of like my heated throw blanket that I find myself using even if I don't have pain that needs soothing. I just need soothing sometimes just for the fun of it. I remember those typewriters, but like you, ours were a little bit newer than that. I know I sure was happy when the electric ones came on the scene...and then when computers/word processors came along...well...life has never been the same since. The book looks interesting. What a shame there was no Christmas "party". We had ours last week, which was for all the ladies in the church and we did do a gift exchange. It was fun. Now I have an item that I don't really know where to put or what to do with, but I still am appreciative of it. Eventually I will find a place for it... Oh, those daybeds...I remember at my son's house in Maine they had one that pulled up into a king size bed, sort of, with a crack down the middle and very thin mattresses. My 6/3" heavy hubby and I had to sleep on that, and of course I ended up in the crack most of the time. Then we got smart and turned the mattresses sideways so they went across the crack. That helped a little, but I remember being very happy to get back home to my own bed. But oh, I'd go back and sleep on the floor if my dear son was still there to visit...But someday we'll see each other again forever in heaven and the beds will be perfectly fluffy clouds! That's what I'm looking forward to.
Merry Christmas my dear friend. God bless you and yours always.

    1. Uh-oh, you'll have to tell us what you received that has no place! No matter the value, those exchanges are great fun.
I love the thought of Heaven's bedding!

  6. I sure enjoyed this post, Myra, and you can drop my name in for the book drawing, please! Sounds like you showed your guests a very nice time! It is good Tom had time with his sister and nephew. I know how good a quiet house feels after company leaves. Great to have 'em and great when they head for home. Love and hugs!!

  7. I very much enjoyed your post today and I did something I rarely do and read all the comments. enjoyed them to. I can't type all that is running through my head because it would be longer than your post plus comments. Daddy did the two finger tapping on one very much like this one, typing his sermons.
Bob and I used to dread staying with my parents and never made it past 2 nights because the bed was a misery. back then we could not buy a new mattress for the bed, now they are gone. the last time we visited Daddy we took his bed because he slept only in his recliner for the last 3 years of his life. see what i mean, will stop now. LOVED the post. I am thinking all the foods you ate really hit your stomach hard.

  8. Having visitors, even family, come for several days can be so stressful, Myra, but I'm glad to hear that all turned out well for both you and Tom. Loved the photos you shared!
May your Christmas be merry and bright, and thanks for the card you sent to Danny - he loved it!

I learned to type on an old Royal.
But the one in the photo outdates me.
