Thursday (Oct. 13) is National Train Your Brain Day. What do you do to keep your brain in tip-top shape? Is it helping?
Tip-top shape? Lawdy, I came close to breaking it yesterday. 4+ hours trying to navigate the V.A.'s claim processes.
It's been years since I was addicted to anagrams, the daily crossword.
A few years ago, Sudoku became all the rage but I'm far too dim.
Okay! In front of God and citizens of Blogland, I'm making a vow to minimize the Solitaire app on my phone and upload something provoking that won't make me feel like a mental moron.
Recommendations, anyone?
You can sit with anyone on the world and 'pick their brain.' Who do you choose?
Without over-thinking, I'm going with the first one to pop in my head. Steven Spielberg. His vehicles are like a grand buffet for our eyes, ears ... all our spidey senses.
I'm seriously in awe of -- and drawn to -- his imagination and (seemingly) unassuming personality.
What's something happening in the world (or your corner of) right now that you have trouble 'wrapping your brain' around?
The pumpkin pecan cheesecake I had last month was delicious but it's not something I crave.
Not your ordinary task/to-do list!

I have to say I love all things pumpkin. I have pumpkin spice coffee and love pumpkin pies. Pumpkin bread is good too and of course your favorite, cheese cake ! They say reading keeps your brain active so that is something I do a lot of. My brain muscles are at work everyday ! Hope you are enjoying some cooler fall weather ! Love, ma
ReplyDeleteHow could I have forgotten reading! Yes, we had a terrific thunderstorm earlier that cooled things considerably.
DeleteA very big YES to your B T Washington quote and to the Josh Groban song, "A Time to Remember." Heard that song referenced in a movie lately and it brought back so many memories. Good luck on your checklist. It was too small to read, but any daily list can be a challenge. Let us know how you do.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Libby! I almost uploaded the Brothers 4 version. I wonder if you click on the picture it won't enlarge -- we were chuckling about line items such as "cut myself some slack" and "avoid toxic jerks."
DeleteThank you for the Josh Groban song. It brought back many memories. I've said before that you would have been great in my radio program choosing the songs and tunes. I used to play this song by Nana Mouskouri - a Greek singer.

Good choice in Steven Spielberg. It would make a good Blog post to ask who readers would most like to meet. I'd choose Groucho Marx, Ken Dodd and Cliff Richard.
The first two for their sense of humour. I need humour in my life. Cliff Richard for his constant stand for Christianity despite continuous criticism and mocking - as well as his songs of course.
God bless, Mevely. Thank you for a great post today.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words! And the link to YouTube! Lately I struggle to find humor that's not silly or vulgar. But yes, it's a wonderful when we discover something that prompts laughter. I'm praying now that you find that -- which Anne Lamott calls "carbonated holiness."
DeleteJosh could sing the songbook and I would listen. His voice is just stunning. Love you peering out at us from under your bangs, made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteViolence in this whole wide world is hard to wrap my head around. it gets worse every day. cops shooting kids, kids shooting cops, people killing children in schools, never ending.
I am a 2 on pumpkin, prefer sweet tater.
i want to pick Ansel Adams brain.. now all I need is a camers. lol
I don't do brain excercises, as in what is listed here, but I do use my brain to figure out devices, I think that is excercise, creating is also.
Ansel Adams is a great answer -- I can totally see the two of you, heads together. What you do, researching and deciphering, is perfect. That would drive me to drink ... but someone's gotta do it!
DeleteProbably the game I play the most is Words with Friends Basically, it's Scrabble. I play with about 6-8 friends and I usually play each day whichever ones that are my turn. If I skip a few days, no one seems to mind. Love that picture of you at the end. Your hair is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! I used to enjoy the Scrabble board game and may check it out.
DeleteI love Josh Groban.
ReplyDeleteI love Solitaire too - the other games are harder to me. lol
And that meme from Booker T. Washington - I love.
Thanks, Sandie!
DeleteI am not a pumpkin fan, but the pumpkin cheesecake sounds delicious...maybe it is the cheesecake. Great random thought...the weekly Side Tracker.
ReplyDeleteCheesecake is my weakness!
DeleteYou've given us a lot to ponder.
ReplyDeleteAs I grow older I always fear that I'll lose what's left of my brain (mind). Keeping mentally busy and challenged is essential.
I'm #1 in the Pumpkin Fan Club. I love anything pumpkin-oriented. Pumpkin bread, cookies, muffins - pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin soup, and that wonderful pumpkin candy that the Mexicans make.
Pumpkin pie!!!!! How could I forget???
Delete(good Gawd - my mind is fading!)
Okay, I'll pass you my pumpkin spice! Would you believe, I've never heard of pumpkin candy.
DeletePumpkin candy generally is a very simple recipe - just pumpkin, water, and sugar. The Mexicans traditionally dry it out in the sun, then cut it into square blocks.
DeleteAfter listening to the song, of which like all songs I knew one solid line, other than the title words. Remembering is tough for me on 'specific' things. I like math for my mind, two or three card games and am disappointed in myself at the moves I have missed.
ReplyDeletePicking brains? For me it would be between Bill GAtes and Victor's 'Father Ignatius!' The Father would probably win.....
WE always look forward to this visit. ;-)
Love to you and whatshisname on the KB but preferrable the sax!
Sherry & jack smiling as we leave...
What a nice thing to say. Thank you so much, Jack.
DeleteGod bless.
Father Ignatius is a perfect choice, Jack. Perhaps we'll all meet up with him in the Hereafter?
DeleteMy brain is my favorite toy so I keep it well exercised. I haven't had anything pumpkin in years.
ReplyDeleteI love how you inspire me by example!
DeleteOh a big yes to that quote!! Steven Spielberg is a good answer and I think would be a fun conversation.
ReplyDeleteEven to spend time around him -- simply watching him work would be a thrill!
DeleteYes, and amen to the quote from Booker T. Washington. Hope your week is going well with a little brainy thrown in! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen!
DeleteSurely solitaire is good for the brain!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe. Lately, however, it's become a mental crutch.
DeleteI do Wordle every day on my phone. The NY Times version. Several friends also do this on Facebook and we share our joys and defeats with each other daily. It's been a good little challenge for me, especially since a couple of the friends that also play were in my high school a year ahead of me and were both considered quite studious and smart and in the National Honor Society, etc., etc., something I never achieved because I was too busy enjoying life rather than studying as much as I should have. Anyway, I get a kick out of playing this Wordle game along with them and sometimes I beat them and sometimes they beat me, but we always have a good time and encourage one another no matter what. That's the best part. That's the only online game I play. And then there's blogging...LOL. Another mental challenge.
ReplyDeleteTrue that! Several of my FB friends also play Wordle; I appreciate you sharing your experience with it!
DeleteAmen to Booker T!! Solitaire is my brain game and I'm sticking to it!! LOL I'm too tired for anything more complicated!! Love ya, Myra!! xo
ReplyDeleteI think you're on to something, Terri!
DeleteI like that list from your Bible study. I need to try something like that.
ReplyDeleteYour mention of the pumpkin cheesecake you had made me think that I forgot to list pumpkin rolls on my blog, when I mentioned I can take pumpkin or leave it. I had a homemade roll last year that was amazing!
I love that quote from Booker T. too.
A pumpkin roll sounds delicious!
DeleteI remember growing up as a preteen and then teen playing games of solitaire over summer vacation. It is a good game for the mind! I am on the lookout myself for something new to play to keep my brain alive, lol. I can't seem to get into Wordle or want to maybe. I did like that quote from Booker T Washington! So much truth in it. Good list of self care too with the tracker. I need to put my phone down more I think!
ReplyDeletebetty
Yes! And canasta, too. I know I need to put down my phone more often, but I'm just not there yet!
DeleteI've never gotten Sudoku. Yes, cheesecake would be my favorite too. I love Josh Groban. That list looks great.
