Tell us a little bit about the best birthday you've ever had.
Hands down, March of 2018. I remember telling Tom, "I graduated living on Alabama Street in 1968 -- and now I've graduated to Alabama on my 68th!"
Following a whirlwind cross-country move, we arrived at my son's home the night before. The next morning (my birthday) we were given the keys to our new-to-us home! Most of the day was spent getting the water turned on and unloading the little U-Haul carrying those treasures I didn't trust to the movers. Exhausting, yet I was elated.
That evening we just hung out with Troy and Lois, consuming copious amounts of gas station chicken (my request) and cheesecake.
In what way(s) have you changed in the last five years?
Near a 180!
I no longer spend big bucks for a monthly precision cut/color ... my feet are happier now that I stopped wearing high heels.
Most importantly, it feels so good to have jumped off the tilt-a-wheel! Sure, we could have more discretionary dollars, but I'm less stressed, less snappish.
What's your favorite thing about the street on which you live?
Having lived so many years in the desert Southwest, I still wake up and grin at green everywhere! Too, it's nice not having homes built practically one on top of another.
The Hodgepodge lands on National Beer Day. Are you a beer drinker? What's a recipe you make that lists beer as one of the ingredients? If not beer, how about yeast?
I don't drink beer but have a favorite chili recipe that calls for a seasonal brew.
As I grow older, I would like to be a woman who _________________
I was going to write, "doesn't fret" ... but we all know that's never going to happen!

Yesterday afternoon Tom's neurosurgeon confirmed what we prayed for -- there is no recurring infection or cause for concern. We have a follow-up with the infectious disease specialist tomorrow, but don't expect any surprises.
Well one of the ladies decided, if I wanted to be a Southerner, that was unacceptable. She and Billy showed up at our house yesterday with this:
first things first. I LOVE POUND CAKE, and I am shocked you never tasted one. maybe it is a southern thing? now I wonder. there was never a holiday that there was not a pound cake with all the other cakes and pies.

there is no favorite thing about the street we live on unless I count the fact that we are close to everything we do. nothing is more than 3 miles away. Hospitals, doctors, Walmart, Publix, we can live without every going further than 3 miles
I love your birthday story... and I remember how excited you were when you bought this home and left the dry sand of AZ.
my birthdays are memorial because the first week of sept is peak hurricane season in GA and FL and in 63 I got married just after a hurricane passed and drove to FL to meet another one, the first birthday married to Bob Elena came along and scared me silly, stomping around in the gulg for 5 days
Your proximity to all those places is perfect ... practically walkable!

DeleteOh my goodness, that pound cake looks delicious! Worth every calorie I am sure! Great news about Tom from the neurosurgeon! Something to celebrate for sure! I think my feet would rebel if I tried to get them into high heels these days! They probably would go on strike!

DeletePound cake is a favorite of my husband and son. Our son always requested it for his birthday and his grandmother would make it and put icing on it so it looked like a birthday cake. We now ask, "pound cake or pound cake with icing?" Wonderful news about Tom!

ReplyDeleteI agree with your friend about the pound cake. Nothing beats a steaming cup of coffee and a slice of toasted pound cake with a pat of butter for breakfast.

DeleteWhat great news for Tom, hope it continues to be so. I still remember my 16th birthday party which was the only big party my parents ever let me have. I decorated the basement, set up the record player so we could dance and all my friends came. At the end of the party we discovered it had snowed and everyone had to dig them selves out of the snow before they could go home. It is good not to have to wear heals anymore. I wore them for years but since my last job was a construction company I got to wear jeans and comfy shoes to work there. Hope you are having a wonderful week there ! Love, ma

Thanks! Yes, that's the lot next door; our pastor and her husband bought it intending to build. They wound up buying another home, but plan to keep this lot for gardens and family play. I'm so relieved!

DeleteActually pound cake has European origins per Wikipedia. I'm a Californian and I enjoy a good pound cake with fruit and almonds on top.

DeleteI love a pound cake! I make a chocolate one every Christmas and look forward to that. It's the only time I make the chocolate version but I do make pound cakes to bring to gatherings. I live in the south too lol.

DeleteI can strongly identify with the pleasure you get when you wake up and see an abundance of green everywhere. After living in barren TX and arid CA, I never get tired of savoring the lush forest and hills that surround me here in TN. I especially love the morning fog.

DeleteWhat a nice gift to have delivered!! We even had pound cake in Ohio, so it's not necessarily just southern!! You have to eat it with coffee (dunk it) or have berries to spoon over it, though! DeleteThat pound cake sure looks good. I would love to know her recipe. The one I make turns out too dry. My mother in law always made a pound cake that weighed 10 lbs, like her fruitcake. LOL. Her's tended to be dry too...so I don't know the secret. Ask your friend for me, okay? I love a good moist pound cake with some strawberries and whipped cream...or not. Loved this post, and I love that Tom had a good report...and I love that you love your green street lush with vegetation and shady trees...I could never ever live in the desert. The closest we came was Kansas, and I had to get out of there quick! Just couldn't stand the flatness and boringness of it all. I need trees! Oh yes, yay for the class of '68! DeleteYay for Tom and the Hearing Aids! I forgot to mention a few posts back. Also the neurosurgeon. Good news is always such a blessing.My 60th birthday hands down. All the 60 plus wishes I received in forms of cards, letters, emails, I have a show box filled with them. Avery too but his was his 65th! Pound Cake, oh yeah, my aunt Ang could whip it up. Delicious. I like it with a cup of tea. I do have a Southern Living recipe. I have never liked heels. I am a comfy shoe gal. Financially it was very tough but the best time of my life watching Harrison James. Oh that child, I told him just this week if you pass me up height wise I will be so mad! She smiled and said "you're funny grandmother!" That kid, he may be in a law practice with Brody, the other "litigator". Always pleading their case. Harrison told Noelle earlier this week, if you let me go to Grandmother's I will be so happy. You know I Just need a day, one day without my sister bugging me. hahaha Of course, I Needed a bank loan ! "Grandmother I drink a Vente Chai tea". "Grandmother, pleeeeeeeeeeese just two of these hot wheel cars" ( ninety nine cents a piece). "Grandmother just one Velveeta extra creamy box of mac n cheese." Grandfather said, your'e an easy target Grandmother! lol! I sure am but I love that child. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the Halloween trick or treat bag he said if he did not get it right then and there he did not know what he would do! I said listen, I am running out of money so grab one for your sister too. She had a purple bag with a spider on it and he has an orange one with a Jack-o-Lantern! In Shea's words, Girl Power!
