This week Annie writes, "According to the late Jordan Maxwell, Hollywood is named for the fact that the holly was used for magic wands by the Druids. This is where the term, 'Hollywood Magic' comes from. People are under its spell! Another story says that H.J. Whitley, the father of Hollywood, saw a Chinese man hauling wood on the hills overlooking the future site and asked him what he was doing. 'I holly wood' he said, meaning hauling wood. It occurred to Whitley at holly wood was a great name for his new town."
During WW2, Marilyn Monroe was an aircraft factory inspector. She was no dumb blonde but had an above-average IQ. Do you know some Hollywood or record-industry trivia?

That's a toss-up between 'Schindler's List' and 'Saving Private Ryan.' Since the first is based on a true story, I'm going with Schindler's.
Has a movie ever really moved you or changed the way you see things?
I've always colored inside the lines; believed that laws were enacted for a reason.
But when Tom and I watched 'Gone Baby, Gone' I had to question my own moral compass. Goodness, that's one of the biggest arguments in which he and I ever engaged! To this day, I'd bet neither one of us is willing to compromise.
Do you have movie nights at your house with special snacks, treats, etc? If not movies, was there something else around which you created a special family night?
We've not done so in years; I think that would be a nice tradition to resurrect.

I saw Gone Baby Gone, could not remember it until I watched the trailer. Bob and I NEVER agree on anything, especially things like this. I was sitting on the fence on this one. I am famous for sitting on the fence, which is what I call seeing both sides.. have not seen the other movie, will keep an eye out for it, right now it is a pay per view on Prime. speaking of hollywood, did you watch the oscars? talk about DRAMA!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Gone Baby Gone and I need to look it up and read the synopsis! I don't even remember the last time I went to the actual movie theater. Mark is not a big fan of movies so I've actually gone a couple of times by myself over the years.

ReplyDeleteI don't think I have any memorable films that stand-out above the rest. I used to like the Marx Brothers and Bob Hope because of the repartee between the characters.
ReplyDeleteFilms I'd recommend: Philomena (true story). Twelve Angry Men and Babe. I remember sitting in the cinema and yearning for a bacon sandwich whilst watching Babe. I cried because of the price of the cinema tickets.
I like family nights in. I love my family. If it was not for my family I would be arguing with perfect strangers.

The origin of the name "Hollywood" is so funny, Myra, especially if it's true. And we don't have designated movie nights, although we've been binging on Yellowstone - What a great series!

ReplyDeleteI had planned to post a few more Hollywood-related stories this week (inspired by the Oscars...) but I got sidetracked with Creepy Joe's trip to Poland.......(smile)
BTW - I've heard many (conflicting) stories about how the name "Hollywood" originated, and I've never been able to figure out which one might have a semblance of truth.

Popcorn and a movie are two of my favorite things. I only watch movies now on TV. Going to a movie theatre and seeing the big screen pictures do put a different perspective on a film though. I did manage to watch the Oscar presentations this year and loved seeing the bits and pieces of the movies they showed. There is so much talent out there, it's amazing to see what they all do. Now we even have stars that know how to sign with their hands.

ReplyDelete\I love movies and we own tons of DVDS. There are old series we rewatch. Nothing much on TV that isn't tainted by the culture movement today. UGH
Going in Style was a great and entertaining movie, that's for sure. I hate where Hollywood has leaned to the left, refusing to see and hear the majority of Americans and their sentiments. Maybe the latest Top Gun blockbuster will change their minds.
