Has anyone else noticed lately, how many vehicles on the road look alike?
Aside from say, a Mercedes or a Mini Cooper, I have to search for an ancestral logo.
My love affair with the horseless carriage started at an early age.

My nerd-ness was cemented.

For instance, the 60-something Plymouth (right) -- whose back wheel fell off in the middle of traffic.
Mortified, party of one!
A year later Troy's father bought this early Toyota. Looking back, I'm shocked he was able to secure a car loan. Poor as a couple of field mice we were.
In 1977 I spotted this Fiat X-19 at Abilene's new car show .... and fell head-over-teakettle. For days, that's all I talked about -- as if my new husband had a money tree hidden in the back yard.
Finally, while on a weekend trip to San Antonio Ron had had enough: "Okay, I bought the car for you. It was supposed to be a surprise. Now, will you please shut up and let me go to sleep."
Even without air conditioning, I loved that little car.
.....Until in '82 I grew a little big for my britches and thought I needed this.
Serves me right.
This gas-guzzler totally defined the term "Lemon."
Fast forward.
I don't love my Camry, but it's been good to me.
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?

After Carvana offered my son almost $7,000 more than what he paid for his new truck, son suggested I see what mine's worth.
So, I went to the website and keyed in the VIN, answered a few questions, and waited. A few minutes later, a firm offer: Two hundred dollars. Two HUNDRED dollars? I nearly spit out my coffee.
Given there's still no money tree out back, I'm mighty glad my priorities have shifted.
Okay, there may have been a moment when I spotted a '67 'Vette in the body shop, but no. Dependability's most important in our decision-making right now.

You got me thinking back to all the cars I drove ... and owned. First car I drove alone after passing my Driving Test was my dad's. Got into an accident and damaged the car. I still maintain it was not my fault. Dad was very understanding.

Grinning...thanks Myra. Last year I bought a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder and I will never ever go back (my first ever car I bought, signed for on my own)...I love this SUV, LOVEEEEEEEEEEE ITTTTTTTTTTT. Of course, now I have to keep working to pay for it, LOLOL. My first car way back when was a 1983 Mazda GLC hatchback. OK, friend, gotta get ready to go too work, thanks for the many smiles.

DeleteWhat a fun post! Loved hearing about your cars. I just realized the other day that one of our cars is 10 years old and the other is 15 years old. May be time to invest in a newer one. Actually, we are planning to buy a van here real soon that is about 2 years old.

DeleteI loved this of course!!! We have a son and a niece who would join you with the opinion of your vette. Love the kiddie car, what memories. Oh yeah I recognized the Plymouth fins right off. SAD about the rear wheel. Thankfully it never happened to us.

ReplyDeleteI had 2 Impala stations wagons, 1 Impala hard top, and I left my black ad whie valiant under the traffic signal it stopped under and walked home. i always had to buy what i could afford not what i wanted. bob and i bought a 78 Corvette in 1986 the month we paid off his house mortgage. loved it them but could not get in and out of one now

DeleteThat was a fun ride through the cars you have owned. I had a Camry and it was good to me too! I have enjoyed my Mini Coopers. My first one I had for 5 years and the one I have now will be 13 years old in September.

DeleteThat was a fun post. About the only thing I care about in a car is that it has working a/c and runs well. As far as knowing anything about any cars? I can tell you what color it is but the make and model is never in my wheelhouse.

DeleteSo true about cars these days looking alike. The car companies are trying to make the most aerodynamic one for good gas mileage. I have confused my Rogue for other car models because they all look the same lol.

I always thought how cool that would be, but then again, it didn't have a back seat or much leg room, etc., and I was always too practical...but it still would be fun to at least drive one once. We've never been big on cars...size and money have always guided us with a family of 5. I enjoyed your post. I may have to think about the cars we've owned, because actually, there are some stories...now you've got me thinking... LOL>

DeleteWhen I was in Young Mom Mode I loved my Gold Plymouth Voyager. It was sort of cozy, like a little house on wheels. It was what we needed for that time in life. Plenty of room for the kids, camping/fishing/sports gear/dogs. It was my vehicle from the time the kids were babies until they had their own cars. Goldie was a good old van.
ReplyDeleteAfter that, I drove Ford Thunderbird for several years. I loved that car during that time in my life. With the van I was always the last car to go at a 4 way stop, With the Thunderbird other cars made way for me. Maybe I drove with a different attitude without kids in the car. Blue was a great car, and so comfortable
Then I had another car, which I am still mad at. I drove it for a few years and two weeks after I retired it developed major mechanical problems an my husband and I decided to let it go and just share one car, since I was retired
Now we share a Hyundai. It is a nice, comfortable car. I've never even given it a name. Never even thought about naming it until just now.

I've never cared much about what I drive, Myra, as long as it gets me from point A to point B, but I do want my ride to be reliable. I currently drive a 2006 Toyota Scion, and it is the bomb!

DeleteOh I love the old car models. So classy. Today everything looks alike. A friend was recently in a terrible accident, broke her wrist but they have a tiny energy safe car and I think somehow those are such death traps. My niece had one and her hubby took son to school one morning. Daughter was home ill. SOme crashed into them and my niece said had Sarah been in the car she would have been killed. Safety or energy? Hmmm......plus the electirc car stalls you see at stores like Wal-Mart. Fueled by diesel. Hmmm......
ReplyDeleteMy dad found my first car for me a 1972 Dodge Swinger, canary yellow. Loved that car until Noelle plowed into a building with it claiming the brakes failed. I still mourn the loss of that little car. It took me everywhere I Needed to go. AVery's friend Dave just bought a new Vette. But he is single, late 50's with a pension and a full time job. So he can afford the luxury. I prefer safety overall. He did not give up his truck though. I Know in Colorado he would not be cruising to work in snow with a Vette. HaHaHa
Hannah still has her little Toyota. They kepe it in good shape. This was fun thinking aobut cars. Thanks for the memories and the fun. Love your 1953 coupe. Wink WInk :-)
