Anxious much?

Some days I get to thinking how nice it must feel to be Chill.  Laid back.  Don't worry, be happy.

But no.  Like my mother before me, I'm a fretter.  Thankfully, I've learned to keep my anxieties under wraps.  Think, that serene little duck gliding across the water -- all the while paddling furiously under the surface.

I thought it might be fun to detail some of my anxieties.  Maybe seeing them in black and white, I'll realize how silly they are.

I'm not talking about Covid ... being asked to sing a solo ...  a job interview .... lab results.  That stuff goes without saying.   And don't get me started on airports!  Who remembers those strategically-placed vending machines where you could purchase a Life Insurance policy right before boarding your flight?

So, a few weeks ago, Tom was unpacking his 'smart' TV and asked me to help with the setup.  My stomach made an unpleasant noise.

Yep, instruction manuals are right up there.

Here's some more of my shiver-triggers ...

😟 Calling Customer Service

😟 Travelling through a car wash, blind behind the wheel.

😟 Driving next to an 18-wheeler

😟 Staring at the oversize pill in my hand right before I put it on my tongue.

😟 Asking for a favor.

😟 Turning left onto two-way traffic.  (Yes, I'm still that someone who makes 3 right hand turns to avoid one left.)

😟 Saying 'no'

😟 Waiting for eBay feedback.  I always make sure to point out any imperfections, tears, etc.  So far, it's been all thumbs up.   Still, I keep waiting for one disappointing rating from a Karen.

😟 Will the pest-control guy think we're pigs when he sees I haven't dusted behind the refrigerator?

😟 Wondering if I left too many exclamation points on a comment.  Again.

😟 Leaving a store without having purchased anything.  To self: "Act natural."

Now, don't you feel better about yourself?  😀

Hugs, Myra

  1. Many of your anxieties on your list apply to me. One thing I dread is calling customer service for any reason. Many times the people have an accent or a soft way of speaking that I can not understand. Plus that is 20 minutes I will not be getting back. Or an hour!

  2. LOL, Myra, my mom was a fretter too so I got that fretting tendency as well :)

I'm with you about left hand turns. I do try to avoid them like the plague!

I think your list of anxieties would be a lot of people's list of anxieties. When going through a car wash, I'm always afraid the machine is not going to go up when it is supposed to and is going to crack open my windshield.

I wouldn't worry about the eBay feedback. There is always going to be that one who is not going to be happy, even with the most smoothest of transactions. When I look at reviews, etc I look for a theme. If there are 500 positive ones and 1 negative one, I'm more apt to purchase the product or go to the restaurant. So don't lose sleep over it :)

I hear you about instructions too for putting together things. The minute I open one, it looks all Greek to me, lol :)

    1. Thanks, Betty! Actually, I've never driven myself through one of those car washes -- Tom does while I close my eyes!

  3. Look up "anxiety" in the dictionary and you'll find my name - with footnotes and references. I'm probably the most anxiety-ridden person who ever existed, ever since I was a child.

I can relate to everything on your list (except the car wash) and I could add hundreds of my own.
Doctors, dentists, driving, shopping, appointments, making phone calls....

Let's put it this way -
I can get a panic attack in the library.

    2. You and I are so alike. Only, I'm not as funny.

  4. I am glad to know we are both so "normal". I think your anxieties are quite normal, because I have most of those same ones. I've been known to cry when talking to support people...I don't like to drive into a car wash either, trying to stay between those little bumpers to guide me in...that and back up is always trial for me, partly because of my neck...I can't turn it far enough to see and I've almost hit people more than once...now we have one of those cameras that gives the rear view when backing, which helps, but still isn't perfect. Try driving next to a 18 wheeler through a road construction zone while it's pouring down rain...concrete barriers on the left, truck on the right with the waves of water blowing right up on the windshield...that's almost as bad as the car wash! LOL. (actually worse) Yep, I think we are both normal. Doesn't EVERYONE have these same anxieties? If they don't, they aren't normal! LOL

    1. Oh my word, Pam! Visualizing that scenario in the rain almost gave ME an anxiety attack! Thanks for thinking I'm 'normal' ... LOL!

  6. Your anxiety triggers don't sound out of the ordinary, Myra, just so you know. Heck, I even like 18 wheelers on a regular street, hate having to make those "necessary" phone calls, and absolutely detest flying. I know the Lord says to place all our cares upon Him, and there are times I do LOTS of praying when I'm feeling anxious or worried. That's not a bad thing! So, take your anxious thoughts and turn them into prayers, my friend.
    Blessings!

    1. Always the best advice! I probably shouldn't put this out into the universe, but. Not long ago I told Tom, I can't fathom a good reason to get on a plane ever again.

  7. I needed a chuckle this morning and you provided it. These are so true for many people!! I use WAY TOO many exclamation points in every email and comment!!!!

  8. I AM YOU, all of these apply and a long list of more. bob gets furious when I take the long way to keep from turning left across Cortez road traffic, the road to the beaches. I use traffic signals, he doesn't, i use 4 way stop signs. the only one I have not done is drive through a car wash, never have never will. you did make me smile because we can point fingers at ourselves. Catastrophizer is my game and Murphy's Law on steroids is always what i assume with happen

    1. Exactly! I like to think it's on account our imaginations are more highly evolved. LOL.

  9. For me worry is a waste of time. It's not easy to let it all go and let God take care of things though. I figure we got to smile more, worry less and pray more.

  12. Oh Myra, you are not alone (as witnessed in the above comments)! I used to be a worrier but have tempered it well over the years. I do give my worries to God and sleep so much better. Joe would laugh at my worries - he helped me too! xo

  13. I can relate to many of these especially making left hand turns in traffic. Seems to be getting harder as I age, too. I like the picture you mention about the gliding duck paddling fast under water.

  14. There are a lot of things I am not crazy about doing, but I don't think they make me anxious. One thing you mentioned that I really dislike is making phone calls to something like customer service. I want to speak to a human not jump through hoops to get a real voice.

  16. Roundabouts …. Almost give me heart failure. I will drive blocks out of the way to avoid one.

And, fueling the car. No logic here, I just get very anxious when I have to do this. Many, many years ago, I called my husband to come get my car from the parking lot where I worked and take it to gas it up. That was when they first started doing self serve at the pump. I was terrified. I am only marginally better now. Mostly he does it.

    1. I totally forgot about roundabouts ... loathe them! Like you, I'm thankful my husband doesn't mind filling my gas tank.

  17. Funny you should say this. LOL I WAS the most laid back dude. I NEVER jumped at the sudden booming thunder of a storm. But age has changed some of that.
The tune? I laugh at my opinion of a lady we traveled with to Germany. I found out she was 'scared of her shadow' until then I thought she could tie cats tails together and throw them over a clothes line. LOL
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

    1. What an analogy ... LOL! I think I'm more AFRAID of being visibly nervous (to others) than that which actually triggers my anxiety.

  18. I'm with Pudge, I don't care for roundabouts... They are new down south...

  19. My father worried more than my mom or she hid it well. But she loved beer so maybe she was more relaxed. Of course, here I am just like my father. But I am getting better. I worry about being left behind, never want to be stuck here after the Lord returns. I do not like night time I think too much. But my husband is such a logical and kind soul, if it weren't gor him who knows where I would be and I absolutely HATE anyone who thinks it is funny to put men down. Hated it as a kid and hat eit today. I do not like highway driving anymore and I dislike those roundabouts. Designed to get rid of half the population I think! I dislike mean rotten people or young ones who think they know it all. My nephew Troy once thought he could school me on the Sand Creek Masaacre. I am grateful to have a friend who grew up on an INdiana Reservation. I will be here all day, I should sign off. I hope your week willbe blessed. SOrry I am so gabby.

  20. I'm right there with you. Yes I want the days where I never worried. They talk about the Golden Years but they are not so golden to me with the the stress I feel all the time.
