Just rambling ....

 

.... in time for Throwback Thursday. 

Tom and I were enjoying the nice chops he'd grilled when I spoke out, "Pork! The other white meat."  He said, "I was thinking that very thing" a few minutes ago!

What's it been?  33 years since that commercial aired?

And so it began.  

Some days I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner last night, but most of the old advertising slogans are hard-wired in my brain.

M:  "Ivory!  So pure it ... :

How about:  "You'll wonder where the yellow went ..."

or,   "I'd walk a mile for ....."

T:  "My mother used to smoke Camels!"

M:  "Mine liked Pall Mall.  What about your sister?

T:  "No, my mom didn't want us knowing she smoked.  My dad smoked cigars."

M:  "Mine, too!"

I love it when Tom begins to reminice about his childhood.  Summers spent with his grandparents and cousins by the lake.  The time his Grandfather led he and Jeff out back. Taking out a new cigar, the old man cut it in half, lit each stub and handed them to the 12 year olds.  Today, the old man would probably be reported to Child Protective Services.

It's been almost 8 years since I quit smoking, but yes.  Some days I miss it ... and will deliberately walk near a cluster of smokers, sniffing the air like a hound dog.

 

I've an 80-something friend who confessed she keeps an unopened pack in her freezer.  30 years later, throughout 3 household moves, the same pack is there, "Just in case."   

Smiling, realizing I do the same thing -- only with peanut butter.  It's been more than two months since I had any, but I'm Reassured knowing it's there.  Like a mental health parachute.

Speaking of, I'm beginning to think there's a scarcity of mental health.  Going on Day #4 that our trash container's been sitting at the curb due to a labor shortage.   This morning we signed a contract to have new siding installed -- but our rep says it will be 16 weeks.  (*sigh*)  They're begging for drivers, but no-one wants to work.

We really, really were hoping those were rotting leaves.

Idle question:

Do you drink bottled water?   Tom's not particular.  He gets his from the refrigerator door, but I'm hooked on Dasani.  Recently he asked, "Why?" ... and when did this begin?   (I can't remember!)  

I was telling him about the pleated glass water jug my mother always kept in the refrigerator, the pure mountain spring water we enjoyed from the kitchen faucet.  So surprised he knew exactly what I was talking about.

I used to get scolded for unscrewing the cap and drinking right from the bottle.

'Wondering why it never made the trip to Florida when my folks retired.

Mother was always so particular about her bread box.

Do people even use them anymore?
