I agree with the sage who wrote, "It is wise to accept the fact that all of us must change as we age." But I sure admire those who make the process less painful.
For instance! I'm blown away by all the advertisements, the testimonials for pillows. Pillows! There are models for the side, the back, or the stomach sleeper. None of which are particularly inexpensive.
I remember a time when my parents bought my pillows. I never questioned their choices ... or realized there was a choice! The only time I recall disliking a pillow was that at my former in-laws home which always smelled faintly of rubber.
I'm not in the habit of patronizing luxury hotels or cruise ships, but understand they now offer their guests a 'pillow menu.' Great perk, no? I tried floating that idea past my boss, but was shot down for little return on investment.
These days I keep 3-4 in rotation: Under my neck + under my hip + between my knees. Then, a few hours later we, "Do the hokey-pokey and you turn ourselves about ..." Sometimes I wonder if my body's warranty is lapsing, or if I'm growing softer.
Do you have a sleep aid that seems to check all the boxes?

So, we enjoyed (yes!) a teleconference with Tom's pulmonologist last Friday.
Because I've the dubious honor of acting as Tom's hearing-assist human, I led with our misgivings about 'the' vaccine. Have I mentioned? My March 11 appointment at the Health Department was bumped to May 26 ...without benefit of a reason; not even a, "We apologize for the inconvenience." (*Sigh*)
I love her empathy and straight-forward, take-all-the-time you want approach. Tom has been concerned that given his existing issues, he'd experience an averse reaction. But after listening to her relate her own (rather unpleasant) experience, I do think he's going to go forward. Plus! She said I could qualify to have mine at the same time (at the VA) because I'm his care-giver. She just cautioned us not to have ours done at the same time. Oh, and like Fauchi, she's a big proponent of double-masking anytime we're in a closed environment. Lots to ponder.
Meanwhile. This morning I added a gaitor to my facial Wal-Mart wardrobe -- but the darn thing kept pulling my mask down. Never mind the virus, all I could think about was it adding more wrinkles. Deep-6 that!
I love my Tempurpedic mattress AND pillow. Going on four years with it and no regrets. Glad Tom changed his mind about the vaccine and that you can get yours from the VA too. My cardiologist changed our minds and I am sure the first one protected me from getting COVID from Joe. I get my second this Friday. xo

ReplyDeleteI really don't care what kind of pillows I use. I usually buy the cheap ones in Walmart - - which might explain why I'm half-dead....
I use two or three pillows because I like my head elevated.
Unfortunately, due to several health issues I now only sleep on my back (which can be unnervingly restrictive).
Worst of all, my two heavy cats always sleep with me - mostly on my legs, which get nearly paralyzed.
Sometimes Bosco likes to sleep on my shoulder, and he feels like an anchor. I'm nearly crippled when I crawl out of bed.
Ouch! Some of my best sleep comes when I indulge in a nap on the love seat.

ReplyDeleteI can't even get into my story with pillows, I would be writing an entire post here in your comment section - let's just say we are pillow people. Many, many pillows of all different kinds that must be properly placed lol.
I've never been one that was thrilled about vaccines in general, but especially one that still has only been approved for emergency use. Even with my skepticism I will get this one when my turn comes around and I'm glad both of you will be getting it too.

DeleteThe sturdy foam pillow I got from the chiropractor (which keeps my neck in alignment) is breaking down and needs to be replaced. Short of taking a nap in a mattress store or bringing home many for a trial I'm not sure how to find the best one for me.

DeleteOver here too we have adverts on TV for a variety of pillows for different sleeping positions and body parts. I don't use pillows when I sleep. I just hang upside down from a hammock.

DeleteI have a problem Mevely and I would appreciate your advice. We bought one of those new pillows they advertise on TV. Very expensive. £45 each. We bought one to try it out. The postman tried to post it through the letter box and it got stuck. It's half in and half out and won't budge either way. When the front door is closed, from the street you can see a large round white blob like someone's backside with white underwear stuck in the letter box. People think it's the mother-in-law!!!

DeleteI have studied the pillow quandry and can't decide which one to try. paying 60 to 90 dollars for the perfect pillow that might not be then trying another is not something i can do. i have 5 pillows, bob has 1, his is a rag and he will not let me get him one, it is at least 20 years old. I sleep with two under my head, becaus i can'find one that is just right, it takes 1 flat 1 puffy to fit. i have a dowarge hump, which means my head can not lay flat. when i had my MRI i told her i needed two pillows and she said they did not have an extra one, i said then this will not happen, i can't lay with my head tilted backwards, i said look at me from the side. she found another pillow. OOPS i am on a rant. on my side i do what you do and on my back use 2. even then sometimes that doesnt work i would like to try that new one that can be used 3 ways but to expensive to TRY it.

I have two medium height pillows under my head. They are scrunchie enough that I can position them wherever I need the extra support. I have an older rather worn out pillow between my knees. I have a tiny pillow (like the kind they used to give on the airplane) under my right arm, as I sleep on my left side. I have a very cute cuddle teddy bear snuggled close to my chest on the left side. Then hubby is over there somewhere on his side of the bed with one pillow. I can't sleep on my back because then I can't breathe and I refuse to use one of those cpap things over my face. If I lay on my right side my face is in my hubby's back and I can't breathe and my arms go numb. So there you have the whole story...sordid, isn't it? LOL. We are still debating over the vaccine issue. I dreamed about it last night, so maybe that is a sign I need to go ahead and do it. I am just not a fan of vaccines. We are waiting for those who need them most to get them first...the "older" than us people, and those who are at high risk. There is quite a waiting list here in our county anyway. Anyway, pillows are a big deal...we buy them at Ollie's or Walmart...nothing expensive. They don't last forever no matter how much you pay, and think about all the drool that goes into them...who'd want to keep them forever? LOL. Have a blessed day.

DeleteBelieve it or not, Myra, I ordered a My Pillow a while back and wow! I really do sleep better! One would never think a pillow could make that big of a difference, but it does.

DeleteoK, here we go...if you want to delete my comment, its ok. No on the vaccines. I have no desire to do so...way to many things to think about--one being if you are allergic to shell fish and have asthma (which I am/do), you are advised against the vaccines...and the more I read about population control and NOONE knows the long term affects, NO THANK YOU. My husband and son are also adamant NO'S. My son asked his doctor about the vaccines...and the fact he read it can cause sterlization. Indeed, it could, again, NOONE knows the long term affects. Also, you still have to wear a mask and such, no thanks.

DeleteI recently researched "the best pillow for stomach sleepers" and I ordered the #1. Well . . .maybe I just haven't been able to break it in yet. Most nights it ends up in the floor beside the bed and I used my old one. Maybe I need to check out My Pillow. I desperately want a shot but my category isn't "up" yet so I wait.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I'm sorry to hear! When I worked at the resort in Phoenix we were all the time getting feedback, "I LOVE your pillows -- where can I buy?" or "WORST pillows ever!" People are passionate about their sleep!
DeleteYes,we are the ones in charge and we hope we make the right choices. I got a miracle foam mattress for my bed and it seems to help with the aches and pains. I need to remember to flip it regally so it doesn't get matted down in one place and it makes for sounder sleeping. Pillows are something I have trouble finding just the right one, but always keep two on the bed. I like my head to be elevated due to so much reading in bed I suppose. Life is what we make it !

DeleteThat's a shame about the vaccine being pushed back. I wasn't sure about the vaccine with my issues but was told it was a must. We were able to Moderna and this convinced me besides several doctor's opinions. "The vaccine is safe and effective in people with known medical conditions associated with increased risk of severe disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, pulmonary, liver or kidney disease, as well as chronic infections that are stable and controlled." I have a pillow I like that is foam. I also sleep on my stomach or I can't breathe with my COPD.
ReplyDeletePillows can be a real pain. I need soemthing to help my knees, because they ache at night. So I Have an old pillow I Use. I am not going to stick a wedge between my knees hahaha. Ihave a friend who swears for herself the My Pillow is a dream come true. It is interesting how we all differ. I Like neck support and comfort so I am good with an older pillow I have had for about 5 years. My ancient one from about 10 years ago is still afav and I refuse to part with it.
