National Good Samaritan Day is observed on March 13.
This day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day. This is a day for unselfish actions to help those in need and to celebrate kindness.
The term, "good Samaritan" comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road. The Samaritan not only cleaned the man's wounds and clothed him, but took him to an inn where he paid for the man's care.
The term is used today to describe those who perform acts of kindness for those in need, especially those who are strangers.
Why not make an effort today to help someone who is struggling or having a problem?
When did someone come to your rescue; can you tell us about it?
Some of y'all may remember when, a few years back, all 7 of our smoke detectors went berserk at the same time and Tom couldn't turn them off. (Turns out the original electrician had mislabeled the fuse box.)
One of my coworkers showed up that evening with new-in-box smoke detectors, an 8-ft. ladder and set to work replacing all 7. When we protested his generosity, Brian replied, "No. It's not negotiable, so shut up already!"
When did you help someone out of a jam; can you tell us about it?
This isn't my story to tell ….. but I'm hoping we can soon be of assistance to our DIL's family. I'll simply ask that you hold her momma and daddy in your prayers; God knows the details.
What are your thoughts on being a good Samaritan? Some states (like Florida) have even passed Good Samaritan laws so you don't get into trouble with the law for trying to help someone.
All I can offer is, it's about time!
So many absurd lawsuits have too many good people running scared.
Thursday is National Pi Day. It's a fun play on the date 3.14. Will you have some pie to celebrate?
Sadly, no. I'm postponing plans to binge 'til my birthday.
Did you know that Pi is the most studied number in mathematics? Are you good with numbers?
Hahahahaha!

Tell us something random about your week.
Soooo excited that we finalized our rental! We'll be leaving for Lake Martin for 3 nights Sunday afternoon!
Originally we talked about going back to Longhorn's for my birthday. Instead, I suggested we just indulge in a nice lunch, then 'snick-snack' on junk food and wine while sitting with our pups on that pretty dock.
Oh, and thanks to everyone who participated in Water Cooler Monday! Me? I'm still trying to successfully imitate the way 'cool' ladies manage to stand with their outer leg slightly forward and their hip turned just so.
When I try that in front of the mirror I think it looks like I'm trying not to wet my pants.
So anyway! WCM will be back later this month. Here's a request: Is there a question you've never been asked ... but would love having the opportunity to answer?
I think the Ides of March is approaching. Like daddy used to caution me, "Keep your wits about you."

so does this mean you will be sitting on the dock by the broom and shoes? hope so... when someone asks me a question, I draw a total blank. an example as in interview. my mind just stops. that is why I don't do the question things... I have to have time to think... please don't tell anybody but I did not know Pi is a number. I failed math and got a D in business math. truly. I do have a question for you. when you tried to do the leg out thing in front of the mirror, did you have on the five inch heels and a push up bra? my aunt was a good samartain to me in 1984 when I was suddenly homeless and running from an abusive mate. she let me live on her sofa for 8 weeks. and she and her hubby gave me the deposit on an apartment. of course she may have done that to get me off her sofa. ha ha… I am a big believer in helping others, I have bought shoes for a homeless man, given a 10 dollar bill to a homeless woman, stuff like that...
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad! I didn't know what Pi meant until I Googled it … and then had to research the definition of a circumference and a diameter. I think my math teachers only gave me passing grades out of pity.

Sounds like you also have a March birthday coming up. How nice you can spend it at the cabin on the lake! Hope you have a very Happy Birthday! DeleteThe biggie! Building our first new home. I had spent everything we had. The house was framed, dried in all brick and block work finished. A beautiful split level home. I decided it was time to go for a loan. THE BANKS WILL NOT LOAN MONEY ON A NEW HOME ONCE IT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
ReplyDeleteOkay that is a shock. I knew in the beginning we did not have the money to finish the home but all the time thinking I was safe, I can always borrow. HA!
I told Sherry we would have to try again later. I would sell it as is. BUT a brother in law asked how much do you need? $40K I said. He withdrew it from his 401K and we finished the home. Sold our original home and paid him. He would accept NO INTEREST!
Later, when my new Construction company was doing well, we were able to PARTIALLY return the GIANT SAMARITAN ACT by building them a home at cost.
Some actions as NEVER forgotten!
Thanks for bringing this back to the forefront of my mind. (Like all stories there is much more there!)

Good Samaritans seem to be in short supply nowadays. It's nice to know that a day has been reserved for them. And laws are being passed to protect them.
Last summer I was broke, sick, and extremely suicidal. If my cousin Nancy didn't come to my rescue, I'd be dead now. No lie. Good Samaritans are rare but they do exist...and so do guardian angels.
Despite all the bad things on this earth, the evil is expunged and forgotten when the light of Good Samaritans shines through.

I never understood why some ladies stand like in the photos. Also, when women kiss a man, (both standing up), why do they lift one leg behind them. A lady did that with me once. I Copied her and raised my leg and we both fell down. That was a short amourous encounter.

DeleteWill say a prayer for your DIL's parents. Its windy here today in Phoenix too. I keep seeing all sorts of little pieces of trash making their way up the street. What a kind co-worker to help out with the smoke detectors that way! I got to go back and see if I commented on your Monday post; I remember seeing it but for the life of me I don't remember much after that with it, LOL. Glad you got your rental sorted out. Indeed indulging with a little of wine with your upcoming special day is a great thing to do!

DeleteThe kindnesses others have done for me over the years, and the kindnesses I've done in return are what makes life worth living. We may not be "our brothers' keeper," but that doesn't mean we can't be there to offer help whenever it's needed. That might not make us Good Samaritans, but it makes us decent human beings.

ReplyDeleteOne of the kindnesses I most cherish came from you! You sent me tiny tequila bottles after my spinal cord tumor diagnosis. Not necessary, but so touching. I keep them on my kitchen window sill as a reminder of kindness and friendship. Thanks, almost seven years later.
ReplyDeleteI love random acts of kindness. Best one ever for us was the year my girlfriends hubby (who could not pass the CPA exam)made a huge error on our taxes. We owed the IRS $5k. My Uncle Louie went to his bank and sent us the money. WHen we tried to make payments after the new year to repay him he said, if I wanted to give you a loan I would have taken You two to the bank. It's a gift, now be quiet and forget it. We took care of my niece Holly would she became ill in her first year at college. My sis was working a full time job and could not take a lot of time off. Plus she was over 120 miles away. We were 30 minutes from Holly. So we brought her to our house and she recovered. When she was well she made us the biggest, lightest and best pancake breakfast ever. She also made us homemade pies that were delicious and perfection! I have so many good memories of random acts of kindness, I really should write s post. You know me, gab gab gab, I love people. I was once caught in a flash flood, two blocks from my office. I had a little old car that was in tip top condition until that flood hit. It died and the water was rising and coming in my doors. Out of nowhere a man in a big red truck pulled up next to me, said miss, get everything you can that you need and take my hand. I drove me to the office. The doctors wife was caught in it too. But she had a four wheel drive high vehicle so she was frightened more than anything because she had her young daughter with her. The doctor was in surgery and had a nurse run dry scrubs over so we could get out of our soaking wet clothing. IT was such a harrowing experience. I never had forgotten that angel who saved me. HUGS
