Wednesday, December 19 is National Hard Candy Day! So, the first question today is to ask if you enjoy hard candy, especially the kind we usually see this festive time of year? What is your favorite?
Weird, perhaps … but I've always been overly concerned about choking on hard candy. Nevertheless, I'm calling dibs on the Butter-Rum!
Which hard candy brings up the best memories for you, if any?
While daddy was living, my mother always made (his mother's) candy. I can still visualize her standing at the kitchen counter cutting little pieces, then wrapping them in waxed paper, twisting the ends. Traditionally our paper-boy, the pastor and friends would each receive a Christmas tin filled with that candy. (Yes, my dad and I were careful to save plenty for ourselves to last the winter!)

My favorite was the anise, but it can also be made with peppermint.

Holiday shopping! Are you finished?
If you could spend an entire day in just one store, which one would it be and why?
Barnes & Noble!
Books, periodicals, coffee … and comfy seating areas throughout. Did I mention books?
What holiday dessert describes you and why?
I don't know that it's not too old-fashioned to be featured at one's holiday table … but I'm going with an egg custard pie: Not too rich or fancy. Ordinary. Besides it matches my hair. LOL!
What is your least favorite holiday side dish?
Yams. (Shudder!)
Now be real! There is one on almost every tree. What is the ugliest tree ornament you have ever seen?
Unless it was crafted by a little child, I'm not fond of anything glittery, overly ornate. I'm not a fan of 'bling.'
Tell us something random about your week!
'Pretty sure I need to re-examine my true feelings about part-time employment. I've answered 2 or 3 on-line ads, but go figure! The one I was called in to interview recently was almost laughable. On the plus side, the office manager and I hit it off immediately. Unfortunately, she's not willing to pay more than $9/hr. and expects 38 hours a week (including all day each Saturday, non-negotiable).
Color me humming, "There will come an answer, let it be."
And on that note, I'm wishing y'all a stress-less day!

my answer for the candy on Cranberry Morn blog this morning was Butter Rum... I don't eat candy anymore but that is my favorite hard candy.

side dish I don't like is dressing/stuffing. pecan pie is me because I am nuts.
no shopping for me at all. don't do gifts. there is not a store on the planet I would spend a whole day in. I guess I could do the B and N if they allowed me to read all day, but I rather stay home and read. I avoid all stores when at all possible.
For you m'friend, I'll share the Butter Rum. :) Aside from 'ma-and-pa' run businesses, I'm with you on avoiding retail establishments.

DeleteThe only hard candy I ever liked was candy cane. We never made our own hard candy. Mom always went for fudge and divinity.

Bathroom and quiet, too. Yes! I once tried making my mother's divinity, and thought my arm was going to break in two. For a little woman, she was mighty strong!

I didn't do ANY holiday shopping this year and have no regrets. Hell, let Santa do it.
I wholeheartedly agree with you about spending a day in Barnes and Noble. Usually I can only tolerate being in a store for five minutes. Maybe four...
I suppose the holiday "dessert" that best describes me is a fruitcake. Is a fruitcake technically a dessert??

You have to try them with plenty of brown sugar and cinnamon (it disguises the taste...)
There are LOTS of ugly tree ornaments around lately. The ones I hate the most are the totally unChristmas ones - like semi-trucks and TV characters.
I won't mention anything about my week. It's too depressing.
Oh, but didn't you witness a Miracle at Wal-Mart? (Yes, I read that about the Italian bread and sausages … but when I went to comment this morning you'd deleted it.)

Delete38 hours is not part time in my books, but full time! And not for that pay! I remember giving the teachers at school the book of life savers. I bet they got lots of them each Christmas season!

DeleteWhat a great Yuletide medley. My dad always loved custard pies and I can't help but think of him when I make one. Every year I buy the storybook life savers for my children's stocking stuffers. It's a tradition that goes way back and even though they have to share with their families now, I still get them. I agree, that job would not be part time at all. Maybe the New Year will have better offerings. It is the time for new beginnings after all. I did some major shopping yesterday, but do still have some small gifts to get. So little time left and yet so much to do....

DeleteI have two Werthers and a fake cinnamon (hard candies) every night.
ReplyDeleteBUT at Christmas time I get a craving for Peppermint sticks. Not canes, just the sticks. I guess it is because that was my daddy's most favorite. He loved to buy the huge ones to give to kids. Something about his childhood, Christmas was the only time they had candy and it was always a peppermint stick (pole or what ever it was called).
Holiday dessert: Sherry's Fruit Salad and her sister Colette's Ambrosia.
Yes, Werthers are soooo good! I can't recall what it tastes like, but Ambrosia looks really pretty!
