Without further ado ….
National Ding-A-Ling Day is observed across the United States each year on December 12. (And why am I just now hearing about this?) Ding-A-Lings on this day call the people they haven't heard from in a while. It may be an old classmate, co-worker or neighbor from years ago. Or perhaps, a call will go out to the child who used to mow your grass during the summer. How about that couple who carpooled for soccer?
There are all sorts of people in our lives who manage to slip out of our lives … who would love to hear the ding-a-ling from you or me.
So tell us, who do you want to call?
Like Terri, I'm blessed to have reconnected on Facebook with folks from almost all walks of my life!
But to answer your question? No, I'd be loathe to pick up the phone and call someone without knowing their circumstances. Aside from family, I won't call anyone (even my BF!) without first checking to see if it's convenient, if they're in a 'good' place to visit. Already, most folks' lives are so chaotic (that) they cherish their privacy.
Each year on the 12th day of December people across the United States recognize National Poinsettia Day. Terri's including this national day, too, because her neighbor's poinsettia from last year is blooming beside their house! Have you ever tried to plant a poinsettia outside?
Nope. 'Can't say I'm fond of poinsettias. But my former in-laws had a glorious patch growing in their backyard.

Do you believe in Big Foot? (I don't think so … but I wouldn't rule it out!) What size shoe do you wear and do you have trouble shoe shopping?
Depending on the manufacturer, I'm an 8-1/2 or a 9. Because one foot is slightly larger than the other, I've been known to stuff an old piece of nylon stocking in the toe of the left shoe. Unfortunately, shoes are something I can't purchase online so mine will be literally falling apart before I go out to retail-land.
Does anyone remember the fluoroscopes machines which measured your foot? My girlfriend's daddy owned a shoe store in Los Alamos and we kids loved popping into Hall's to x-ray our feet!
What is the one thing you refuse to share?
I can't imagine refusing to share anything!
(Well, maybe my garlic popcorn....)
Are you find that this Christmas is stressful? More or less than last year?
Absolutely not! With one exception, I've nothing to mail; and I'm no longer obligated to attend artificial, insincere get-togethers. Pretending is hard work, y'all!

Ooooh man! I had the best time yesterday! Some of y'all may remember Ca$hJocky and the Old Salt (blog)? For a myriad of health-related challenges, Rita ceased blogging some years ago. Still, they've remained dear friends … so I was thrilled when she PM'd me last week to say they'd be travelling through Montgomery!
Never mind that I'd not laid eyes on them in 9 years! Sitting around our dining table the conversation felt so warm and easy. Again, I have to thank Mr. God for introducing me to the wide wonderful world of blogging!
Would you look at the goodies they brought us?
This hand-crafted cutting board pinpoints their home (Washington, MO), and the backside contains an embedded penny, reflecting the year it was made!

DeletePoinsettia is a champ. Where did they live at that time? Mine always get destroyed by white fly when I try to rescue the Christmas season plants.
ReplyDeleteI remember the fluoroscope scopes when I was pre-schooler. I that it was magic.
That/those poinsettia plants were in central Florida, Susan. Some people have bright green thumbs; mine not so much!

ReplyDeleteYa, those fluoroscopes are definitely antiques! In retrospect, probably not a great idea to x-ray so liberally; but I don't recall folks being overly worried about EVERY little thing in the 50's.

ReplyDeleteI like poinsettias! They used to grow in our yard when I was a kid in California. I tried to plant a poinsettia outside when I lived in Texas, but it keeled over within hours.
I'm not surprised. I had cactus plants that died in Texas (I'm not joking).
My shoe/boot size? A Ten.
I remember when I was a kid and buying shoes was a Great Big Production. I'm glad those days are over.

I was an only child - which made me kinda selfish and unwilling to compromise. I don't wanna share anything.
Bloggers are definitely some of the nicest people around. I love them....
.....well, all except for that one miserable Liberal blogger who sent me a death threat. But that's another story for another time.
A Great Big Production, yes. Unfortunately, for most of my childhood I had to be fitted with these ugly shoes that kept the inside of my foot from turning. They probably cost a pretty penny, too and my poor parents didn't need the grief I voiced. Sigh ...

Why do shoe sizes differ in the USA, in the UK and in Europe? One size in the UK is different to the same shoe in the USA.
It is the same with shirts sizes.
And also the same with time. When it is 11:00am here (which it is right now) it is a different time in parts of the US and in other parts of the world. Why can't the whole world have exactly the same time. 11:00am here, where you are, and also for the people in Australia. That way Australia will not be first every year to celebrate the New Year. We'll all celebrate at the same exact time.

I am with your answer on the Ding a ling calling. I do not like talking on phone so would not call anyone. I talk to family though. same shoe size as yours and can't buy without try on.
ReplyDeleteI once planted a poinsettia in our yard here, it did not live a month. they grow here, because I see them but not for me. my great aunts lived in Bartow and I have cousins there. yay for a blogger visit. there is something I don't share. my drink. like don't ask for a sip out of my glass of tea or out of a soft drink. I do share a diet 7 up with bob if we are traveling but that is the only time
I didn't consider sharing a drink. Good point! What a coincidence, your having family in little ole Bartow. Many have passed away, but most of those last names were McGlothin and Stratton.

DeleteI call very few people...especially my family, because they are all so busy and they know I am not, so I let them call me. I do call my sister a couple of times every week just to check in as she like me is retired and has plenty of time to talk. Unlike you I've never met any bloggers in person. How wonderful for you that after several years, you had a visit and gifts from yours. I figure Christmas will happen whether I'm ready or not, I'm not there yet, but closer than I was yesterday! It is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Happy Thursday !

DeleteI may have been called a ding-a-ling a time or two, but I can't say that I've ever heard of Ding-a-ling Day. The concept is kinda nice, though. There's a gal I haven't seen or spoken to in almost thirty years, and it would really be great to get in touch with her, but I haven't been able to find any contact info for her. And like you, there are very few people I feel comfortable calling "out of the blue." I don't even call my kids, because I don't want to bother them or interfere with their busy lives. So they call me. :)
