Happy Sunday, y'all!
I really, truly should be getting ready for church … but the weather outside is frightful, my pajamas so delightful. You get it, don't you? :)
Reading? Not so much since my Fire tablet's battery has begun wasting away. And, aside from The Voice, there's been little on television to pique my interest. (Am I the only one who misses Andy Williams' and Perry Como's Christmas specials?)
Oh, there's plenty of Real Life going on!
Mother Nature's already given me her gift -- a 28* morning. I know that's not so startling to those of you residing up north, but I'll take all the 'winter' she wants to throw my way!

I made up some lame excuse not to attend Wednesday's aquacize luncheon, but Thursday evening Tom's flying club held their holiday party. A seafood buffet. I was concerned about finding anything I could (safely) consume, but heck. They might as well have passed me the entire tray of fried okra. Lovin' it!
Because (grand-love) Chloe turned the big 2-1 last week -- and son's birthday is Wednesday I thought 'what a fun idea!' to bring steaks, potatoes and my traditional banana nut bread to their home last night for a joint celebration BBQ.
In theory, yes. Real Life, not so much - lol. Sarah and her hubby had to be in Birmingham for his military party … then at the 11th hour, Chloe and Johnny announced they'd other plans to attend a friend's party. Oh man! The cold, cold rain and wind was so overwhelming, we asked to borrow DIL's broiler. I felt so awful for Tom! He'd chosen the steaks so carefully, but they were a major disappointment. No-one said anything, but I suspect we were all thinking how great a deep-dish pizza would've tasted.

Anyway! As ever, Lois has decorated so beautifully! They're hosting Sarah and Josh's wedding reception next weekend, so I hope Mother Nature cooperates.

Has everyone finished their shopping lists? Aside from stopping at Cracker Barrel for old-fashioned lemon drops to tuck in BF's box, we're about set. Still, when a friend shared this out on Facebook, I caught myself wishing for a little grandchild nearby.

The best gift were my two youngest kids. John was born on Dec. 11 and Mary was born on Dec. 31. Great times, great memories.

Who the heck wants to ruin a cold Sunday morning by getting up and going to church? It's much better to stay snuggled in bed. You can always pray under the covers.
As for "gone wrong" dinner tales, I can only remember one - which happened when I was about eight years old.
My parents were having very important guests over and Mom made her delicious homemade Hungarian soup (it took hours to make).
My father - who LOVED salt - said it wasn't salty enough. So (without my Mom's knowledge) he poured lots of salt into the pot.
The soup was so salty that it was inedible - and my Mom was embarrassed beyond redemption.
(okay, that was a loooong and pointless story which I probably shouldn't have told - but it's too late).
I can't recall ever receiving any meaningful Christmas presents....but I was born in December, which I suppose was a Christmas present for my parents. Sort of.
Your father - and my husband. LOL! I've no doubt your birthday was cause for great joy!

DeleteOh my gosh, I LOVE that gift idea for a grandchild! That is just the most awesome thing! As for your questioon...My senior year of high school I already knew I was going to college for journalism and Mom and Dad got me a very good electric typewriter. I'm sure it cost them a pretty penny and I was thankful for it like I've never been thankful for anything else. It is still under my bed even though I haven't used it in years (it's difficult to find ribbons).

DeleteOh yes, that Thanksgiving dinner. I was on a men's late league in Gitmo. After a few drinks during the game. the chief said lets take the boat across the bay and pick up my friend who is coming to dinner. No one else called their wives, i didn't either. I got home at 5 Am, to the smell of BURNED Turkey. then I remembered I was supposed to turn off the oven at midnight..... The rest ain't even a bit funny. I had invited two or three single guys over for dinner. Sherry, bless her heart made a good dinner, however I was eating crow, crap and every thing else. Needless to say nothing worked, not even an expensive bottle of Chanel #5, her favorite. But she finally did forgive me we are still married 62+ now.

DeleteYes, I miss those great old Christmas shows!! Why don't they show the reruns for us? My single most meaningful Christmas gift? Probably the oil painting set I got when I was in 7th grade. Set me on a path to loving art!!

ReplyDeleteI remember growing up being allowed to stay up later to watch the Christmas special with Andy Williams. He had a great voice!
Not too much of a horror story with a cooking disaster, but last year for Christmas decided to try a new recipe with salmon and veggies. Decided to go with twice baked potatoes as another side dish. The dinner preparations took longer than we thought and then the wee one was sick so when the family came over, they too were sick, so I ended up holding the wee one and hubby had to do all the preparations I thought I would have helped him with. We ate an hour later that originally planned, but the food was delicious.
I am drawing a blank with a gift I received that was memorable, even though I've received great gifts over the years. I'll have to think on this for a bit and see if anything comes to mind. Call it a senior moment here.

DeleteNo, I couldn't find the Grinch - lol! And no, I'm no where near finished with my Christmas shopping, although we don't go overboard with gifts, even with the grands as they already have so much "stuff." With Danny as chief chef, we rarely have a meal go awry, but it has happened.

DeleteLike you, I do miss all the old Christmas shows. One thing that still seems popular is the Charlie Brown ones. I saw where Charlie Browns Christmas was being shown, but didn't catch it although in the past I've seen it many times. I did watch the Christmas Chronicles on Netflix and it was good. The best gift at is Christmas is always having my family all together. I always try to remember that no matter what food we're having it's the being together that counts. I'm sure no one even noticed how the steaks were, but enjoyed the company. I love your Mom's hat. You were prepared for the cold weather ! May your days continue to be merry and bright!

Deletewe don't do Christmas, so that answers all the questions in one answer. we stopped in 2006. and we love it. the not doing it. by doing it I mean lists and gifts and parties. your story of the dinner that almost wasn't is funny and heart breaking. I don't cook so have no stories but we did go to one similar to yours. went to a friends for dinner the week before Christmas, she doesn't cook and her husband barely cooks. he had never grilled steaks. think hocky pucks served with bring home from Publix trays. he was so embarrassed at the steaks. I love the tree, and don't see the grinch unless it is the green dot right in the middle. love the hat and you really need it at 28. we are going down to 47 the next 3 days and then back to 60 like we are today. my kind of winter. anything under 50 is to cold. I love med cold and med heat. not to hot not to cold..

DeleteI'm watching approximately 7 new movies each week because of Hallmark, Hallmark Mysteries and Movies and Lifetime. Haven't watched many of the specials but Darci from America's Got Talent should have a good show tonight. The tree is beautiful. Yes I am done shopping. I have a beautiful giraffe that Mark purchased for me about 40 years ago. It was a surprise and I loved it!

DeleteWhat an adorable pup. I'm not seeing the grinch but the tree is beautiful. Most Christmases my husband picked out a necklace for me, often made by local artisans and those are all favorites of mine because of the love he put into choosing.
