Flashback Friday

G'morning friends,

Like y'all, days around here have been generously peppered with appointments, celebrations and hastily scribbled lists.  Thinly disguised, "did I forget?"

My wonderful son celebrates his 56th birthday today ... how did that happen

... but we'll wait to celebrate tomorrow at our Penelope's very-important First.  Yes, I can't wait to share pictures!

Meanwhile ...
As sometimes happens this time of year Melancholy arrives uninvited.   I refuse to succumb to sadness; and instead, nourish my mind with memories of good times.  There's little doubt sometime in the coming days somebody will say, "Remember when ..." and you both dissolve in giggles.

My sweet mother loved to remember.   That's actually what prompted one of the questions at last week's Watercooler Wednesday.

Oh friends, how I enjoyed your responses!  I love how Debby said she examines old photographs to find little "morsels of memories" in the background."   (Me, too!)

Could be, these are some of my favorite antiquities

One of a pair of "sleigh bells" collars that my grandfather affixed to his team of horses.
One of mother's earliest memories was being bundled into the back of her father's sleigh for the ride to an uncle's home to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus.

Now that's an image I wish someone might have captured.

Never spoken in a regretful tone, she'd say there was only one gift.  Ever.
Usually a baby doll.

That's just the way things were.  How different than the largesse of packages I used to enjoy!

Here's another sweet relic I enjoy bringing out to the light each December.

A sweet little book from mother's Sunday School teacher, Mr. Jensen

Someday in a few years I want to gift this to Penelope.

But my goodness, there's still birthday packages to wrap, sentiments to pen.  Time's a wasting!
Thank you for spending some of yours here with me!

Hugs, Myra

  1. Precious times, precious memories. My mother told me one time, close to the end of her life, that her memories were what gave her the most comfort. I think we have to edit our memories, toss the bad and cherish the good. Great post today.

  2. First, Happy Birthday to your son. And Penelope’s First Birthday. 🎈 That’s crib bumper pad looks very similar to my first born’s bumper pad. lol. Love that old book from your mom’s Sunday school class and I like how you have displayed it. Very nice! To incorporate items from the past into your Christmas decor is so charming and special. It’s like you are including them - remembering them. I wonder if I’ll be remembered by my own keepsakes?
Let’s both, continue examining those old photographs for those little morsels that spark a memory and brings goodness to our souls.
    Lovely heartfelt post!

  5. Your son has a December birthday! Mine is tomorrow. I know a lot of December people and they are very special. Happy B Day to your son!
I am hopelessly (perhaps annoyingly) sentimental and nostalgic. I love old photos and ancient relics that are my keepsakes. They have a special meaning during the holidays. Jon

  7. Happy Birthday to your son. And Penelope’s First Birthday. The same day?
I think my melancholy comes because I think of all the ways I wish Christmas could be for our family - but isn't. We have lots of strong-minded people and circumstances that just are.
I like the idea of remembering back and thinking about past memories - in pictures and things.
I don't let it bite me either - I recognize it and then move on to something happier and better.

  9. Oh, Happy Birthday to your sweet son, and also to your adorable Penelope! Oh my, 1 year old already? I know it will be an exciting time for all of you! And I love the sleigh bells! What a treasure...along with those memories. And the book...that is truly a treasure.. How wonderful it would be to read it to your great granddaughter! Such traditions/memories to be passed down to the next generation is really special indeed. I do pray that your Christmas will be a time of joy with all of your precious ones. Love to all.

  10. LOVE the sleigh bells and don't remember ever seeing them here before.. I actually said out loud yesterday, Satan get thee behind me I am not going to LISTEN.. and then I attacked 2 closets and spent the entire morning throwing out junk, two closets done and this after noon I attacked Bob's chest of drawers and made him look at every shirt, shorts everything in it by bring it all to the hospital bed holding it up yes or no and wow, now its all done and a ton of stuff is out of the house. I never once thought about being sad because I was to tired to think.

    1. Good for you! I've been after Tom to "address" his own closet for months now ... to no avail.
Yep, I've been known to tell Satan that very thing ... more often than not!

  11. Troy is 56? Really??? Tell him I said he looks a lot younger than his age as does Lois. I do hope that you can gift that precious book to Penelope when that time comes, Myra. So reminds me of my finding of the Charles Dickens book that I elaborated upon in my last post. We are so blessed by children and grandchildren, aren't we? Love to you and yours!

  17. Happy Birthday wishes to your son and to precious little Penelope. I am already excited to see the pictures that will be taken. This post make me think back to the photos of my grandmother just before she passed away. I look at the photos and I see the beautiful Cedar Christmas tree, that I know she enjoyed to the fullest that year. I look at her kids sitting around her and I think of the joy and the pain that filled her heart. Knowing that this would be her last Christmas spending with them all. Yet, she has the most beautiful smile. Thank you Myra for this post.. Enjoy your wonderful day celebrating family.
