I've not tasted Grandma Hanson's lefse in decades, but the memory of its buttery goodness is hard-wired in my brain.
Every time we had occasion to visit her Minnesota farmhouse, I'd make a beeline for the freezer chest. Once warmed, I'd spread butter and sprinkle sugar, fold it into a neat roll ... and try to consume my own body weight in potato and lard. (lol)
I can't find her original, but this old church ladies cookbook contains 3 pages of recipes for lefse alone!

Helmets had not occurred to me but that makes sense. My kids all have bike helmets so they could wear them I suppose. That recipe sounds yummy. It's funny how many of us have food related memories with our grandparents. Have a great day!

DeleteI've never had lefse, but it sounds a lot like the potato patties I make with leftover mashed potatoes, although I don't add shortening. I add an egg and some flour and fry them. Hey, the helmet idea is a good one! Smart! And I love the creamer turned make up holder. I have a creamer on my bathroom vanity that I use to hold my toothbrush! I may have to share my creamer collection someday now that you keep reminding me of it! LOL. Have a blessed day my friend. Praying for all to be well. Oh, my hubby could easily turn into a hamburger, btw. LOL.

DeleteIf we didn't have a truly safe room to escape to when there's a tornado warning, I'd invest in a helmet, too. I remember my maternal grandmother as being an amazing cook - she could fry fish like nobody's business! That's how I came to like fish in the first place. Hope all is well with Tom and you, Myra. Deleteif eating burgers turned us into burgers I would be one now. since childhood they are my favorite food, with pizza a close 2nd. now when I eat a burger I PAY THE PRICE. still eat one a week though. I could eat them every day.

DeleteI have lots of good memories of both of my grandmothers cooking. My dad's mother was Hungarian and a wonderful baker. I was able to get a Hungarian cookbook from their church with a lot of good recipes for the things she made, including her homemade noodles. My mom's mother canned all of her own vegetables and meats. Her homemade apple butter was delicious. My mom made her own version apple butter too. Now DS#1's family continues the tradition. It was one of his favorite things. I think I'm prepared for tornadoes, but haven't a helmet to wear. Now I'm seriously thinking of getting one! Love and prayers for you and yours. Love, ma

ReplyDeleteHere's a follow up on your question about my tea cart. Yes it is a family heirloom. It belonged to Dave's Grandma and then his Mom inherited it. She always had it in their dining room, against the west facing window. Her violets loved it there. I think we are so fortunate to have it in our home too. Its well over 100 years old. I can't find any markings on it and now there is no one to ask about further history.
