... and thanks to those of you who recommended I start using DuckDuckGo (browser).
I've not UNinstalled GoogleChrome just yet ... only because Tom suspects it might affect his Chromebook.
Yes, we're such technophobes; it's okay to laugh.
Easily intimidated, party of two!
You know what else intimidates me?
No, not trying to navigate downtown Birmingham/UAB. Or correctly pronouncing a certain dish in front of the server. Although they're right up there.
I'm talking about QR codes.
You know, "just scan." Even a cave man can do it.
Me, too!
Fast forward to Tuesday morning. The postal clerk handed me my receipt. Smiling, "Now you don't have to type in all those tracking numbers. Just scan!" (Easy for you to say, she thinks.)
Yet a little later while waiting on our breakfast, I played. A few minutes later, woo-hoo! I may not have broken a wrist patting myself on the back, but it still felt pretty good.

DeleteI do not like QR codes either - they stop giving menu's and you are supposed to look it up by QR code.

DeleteThose QR codes are very confusing. The squares with lots of dots in them. The poster said I should photo the QR square and I'll get 50% off the price of any items in the catalogue.
ReplyDeleteI took a photo of the square with my camera and then sent the film to be developed at the chemist. By the time the photo arrived the offer was over; and it was back to full price.
Ketchup intimidates me. I can never get that last bit out of the bottle. Why is it glued there?

ReplyDeleteFor the most part I do enjoy the convenience of technology. I understand it well enough but you do have to keep up on it or you lose those specific brain cells needed for QR codes etc. Technology doesn’t intimidate me as much as going to the store to buy something basic and I’m confronted with an aisle full of different brands, types, sizes, quantities, colors of that one basic thing. I get overwhelmed, walk out and send my husband to get it. I honestly don’t need that many choices when I go to the store.

DeleteMaking decisions about what to eat anymore...and what to cook so we CAN eat. LOL. Some days are just hard. Nothing is appealing anymore. But at least we have food, and I am thankful for it. I just wish I didn't have to cook it. LOL.

It's everywhere! Yesterday I watched several elderly couples trying to navigate the lab's kiosk check-in process. The struggle is real!
DeleteI used DuckDuckGo for about a year. It never affected GoogleChrome ( I'm only speaking for myself). Problem is, DDG isn't quite as secure as we are to believe. And their Internet searches aren't nearly as vast as Google.

DeleteI like Google Chrome and I use a Chromebook, but I think my son uses DuckDuckGo. I agree with you, I never scan anything. Lots of things intimidate me but right now I have to renew my driver's license.

DeleteI suspect that when I butcher the name of an unfamiliar dish at a restaurant I'm not the only one to have done so, but today when I saw something interesting at a mall food court place I Googled the word to get the pronunciation.

DeleteLOL... if I can't pronounce the name of a dish on a menu, I just ask "how do you say this?!" I am okay with scanning QR codes. Seems they come up often these days. I downloaded DuckDuck but have never used it. Let us know how it works for you!!
ReplyDeleteSo far I'm comforted by the privacy part. Every time, it informs me how many tracking attempts it's blocked -- 440 in the last 7 days. All the same I'm keeping Microsoft Edge.

A better question for this 69 year old is what *doesn't* imitate you in modern times! 🤣 The QR codes is right up there along with having to call one of those animated answer thingys where I end up screaming at the speaker, "Customer Service! DeleteI have yet to scan any QR code on my screen, Myra. Call me paranoid it you will, but I don't want any more of Google to mess with my personal space. In my latest blog, I discuss the joy of having this mini-bike so I can stay active even when I'm sitting down. Guess what? Within two days of simply talking about it with Danny, ads for the same brand start showing up on my feed when I'm trying to read articles on Fox News! And that's not the first time something like this has happened. Big Brother is closer than we know.

DeleteWhen I was in Orlando a few weeks ago, my job wanted us to use the QR codes and I promptly refused. I was not using my personal phone...did I get in trouble? No. Just send me a link that I can open, and they did. LOL--I refuse to put work on my personal phone, plus I will not use those QR codes, I am old school, thank you very much, LOL. DeleteAnything technical baffles me. I usually have to call one of my boys to see how to do things. They are all very knowledgeable. I don't scan anything well. I can totally relate...I'm not a fan of QR codes, or the pay at the table machines when you eat out, Or using wallet on my phone......I guess I feel intimidated by many of the technical uses on the phones these days. Hey, I still write checks!! lol... I can just hear the recipients laughing when I hand them a check. I was at the hardware store the other day and I overheard two Older women talking about checks....They each shared that they have not written a check in a couple of years. What? they were much older than me and they totally know how to get by without writing checks!!!! I have so much to learn...this is what grandkids are for, Right? To teach us how about Technology.... Have a good weekend...
